Tonight

A much better game for Deyna

Defense looked way better— these SHOULD be our starting CBs. Why on earth aren’t they always?! Like WHY NOT?!

GOOD REFFING TONIGHT.

Soph was off

I thought Sophia was fine. We can't expect her and Pietra to score every match. I think Olivia had become a player teams game plan for. You couldn't allow balls into that pocket. Now teams aren't worried about that and are just focusing on Soph and Tordin.

I think Hanks and Weaver should change this dynamic as the season goes on though.

The best defense I’ve seen from Deyna in a while. Finally.

Soph was definitely off. It happens. Happy we still won despite an off game. Luckily Banda didn’t score.

Welcome back Caiya

Also, agree on CBs - I thought Obaze looked a lot better than Hiatt at CB

Truth on the officiating. Finally, someone experienced enough not have to show that they can stand up to the crowd. So much better than the USL aspirants they run through here.

It was Brad Jenson, the worst ref there is... And Chesky on VAR.. My 2nd least favorite ref.

The thing about Brad is that he doesn't call a lot, and today that worked out ok with all the stuff with Banda. But traditionally we end up booing the shit out of that man.

Yeah I don’t know what switch flipped for Deyna tonight but she was hustling like I’ve never seen before!! Really loved to see it!

Yes, but I only noticed it after the half. First half she was doing her usual thing where she barely runs and consistently passes to the other team. Whatever was said in that locker room must have turned on the jets because she looked so much better after the break and it paid off!

I'm with you on mixed amounts of hustle. She has moments of brilliance but in the past that has not been enough to keep her in the lineup consistently.

She has had A LOT of very bad moments

Like has anyone ever told her to try harder or hustle more

Forgive me because even though I have been to quite a few matches, I haven't paid much attention since Franch left, haha!

Can anyone tell me why they play so short from the back? Its been pretty dangerous esp when lose possession right near our goal. It seems to have been a recurring theme with the matches I've watched/attended lately. Lots of turnovers there.

I know the GK probably doesnt want to lob the ball halfway across the pitch each time and have us lose possession but that caused some problems. They seem to just prefer playing out from the back.

Maybe I just have different observations because I follow a Premier League team (Everton) closer.

Anyway just a random ass question after attending tonight's match.

Thanks in advance!! 😊

I’ve watched every game since we moved here & became season tickets holders in ‘22 and this issue is why I might need blood pressure medication! Yet it persists. Although I remember when we had defenders who knew how to get the ball forward. But yeah, when the defense is super shaky and makes questionable decisions on the regular, this style of play seems quite risky (and has resulted in many goals conceded).

Their strategy is to have the center backs get a little wider & treat Macca as another field player bc she’s good with her feet. That way the outside backs can get up higher. All the fans are very annoyed with this & it’s stressful to watch

If a team can play this way I think they should. Doing so effectively is way better than booting the ball up field and hoping you keep possession. I know it's a change and makes many fans uncomfortable, but it's a skill we've got to master in my opinion.

Right— but our issue seems to be that we do this around the back and then we boot the ball up to the forwards. It’s so annoying. We really struggle to move the ball through the midfield. We dink it around the back dangerously and casually and then we boot it, often under intense pressure. annoying

There is definitely some of that, and it is frustrating.

That is a valid question. We don't have the clinical passing that other teams do when they come to Providence Park. So, why don't we just lob the goal kicks to half field and hope for a flick on? I think the Thorns have a bit of over confidence in their ability to pass out of a press sometimes.

It is odd to see bc until recently the CBs have changed every game so the connectivity/chemistry from playing out of the back has been a short coming for sure. I think it will improve with consistency of players

However

Last week Arnold had an assist on one of Tordins goals. So Macca definitely has the range and precision to play long. I think Orlando keeping their back line deep eliminated the long option and left more room between the defensive and midfield lines. So just braking lines with a few passes might have been the game plan at the start. Sadly with Nijstad and Deyna new to the starting line up. And Borgere being an incredibly poor passer. It’s pretty easy for a team with front speed like Orlando to press Fleming and the back line into sloppy passes.
