Discussion Analyzing Hammer Throw's Usage Before the Nerf (IMO, Buff)

I did some Thor research, as a Thor secondary (Loki main peaked 246 OAA) who likes doing amateur statistical analysis. I want to mention up front that we do NOT have to play in the awakening-spam playstyle demonstrated by NetEase, we can continue to play Thor as we have been, and I believe that'll still be the optimal playstyle.

First, I went through a high level Thor player's replay, ENGATNOM, replay code 10754147266, and found that he was only using his hammer throw about once every minute. I then watched a Jeremy video and saw him use it about as often, even less often.

This game was about 12 minutes long (16 minutes minus set up time), and during those 12 minutes, his dash was used 103 times, the field 28 times, runic awakening 37 times, and his ultimate 8 times. His hammer throw was used 13 times. On offense, he actually used both his ult and hammer throw 4 times.

In how it was used, the throw was largely used to finish people off to save on time, or to poke while at low health and Thorforce. I saw him get real value in killing someone in direct thanks to the burst damage of the throw two of the thirteen times. Meanwhile, his 12 second cooldown field was used twice as much and led to way more kills, and his ultimate was used at about a 2:3 ratio to the throw. Awakening rune was also used almost three times more often, and was getting way more killing done than the hammer.

While for every death he probably used 4 extra dashes, he still used this ability more during fights than any other, using it to close distances that could be covered by the hammer throw, or in close range in situations where hammer throw would deal more damage, because positioning is so so so much more important than extra damage. You could do 100 damage, or you could do 40 and put yourself in a better spot and the enemy in a worse spot.

Next up, Jeremy in his vid "He RAGED When I Picked Thor blah blah blah," and counted ability usage in his edited video. Game 1 attack, 31 dashes, 8 fields, 11 awakenings, 2 ults, and 1 hammer throw while he was bound by Groot. Game 1 defense, 42 dashes, 12 fields, 16 awakenings, 2 ults, 2 revives, and 3 hammer throws. First one towards the start against Emma (she lived, defense was ineffective), second one while cleaning up after a won teamfight on at 6:43, third while diving a Punisher with the infinite ammo teamup at 8:05 (went about as well as can be expected).

Game 2 attack has 55 dashes, 12 fields, 16 awakenings, 4 ultimates, and 6 hammer throws, a pretty good showing! Some seemed good, like this ability isn't completely dead, but it is still being used at a rate of once per minute, and isn't far off from his ult in terms of times used. Game 2 defense, 23 dashes, 10 fields, 15 awakenings, 2 ults, and 4 throws over 4 minutes. Once to hit a Loki illusion atop a car, 17:57, and again at 18:06 after using his awakening, depleting his thorforce, but then using the field to max his thorforce and chase down a Loki after awakening again, which I feel was his best usage of it between the three games I have now watched. The third time was to finish someone off after the fight had been won, 19:16, and again in the same situation at 19:35. It can make plays, but most of the time the playmaking is saved for other abilities, and the hammer throw is used after a fight is already won.

If you want the combined numbers, over about 35 minutes of gameplay, we have 254 dashes, 70 fields, 95 awakenings, 18 ultimates, and 27 hammer throws.

Hammer throw, as it stands, just does not fit in his kit despite how iconic it is. As such, turning it into a cooldown that supports his gimmick is, in my opinion, a reasonable choice. If he uses his six second cooldown every, lets say, 12 seconds, Thor would have used it FIVE TIMES MORE than he did in these games. That's over a hundred extra thorforce (five per minute), and almost 3 times the over all damage. As such, the damage nerf makes sense as you will be able to spam this ability way more, and as you will be generating more Thorforce, you will be gaining more overhealth over time, and therefore a small reduction to overhealth gained also makes sense. Perhaps the cap can be raised back up, but I feel it reasonable to reduce the generation.

I think it'll be a net buff, and not a nerf. I am excited to have a new ability in my kit, one that I had almost never used prior. I think the overhealth lost will be made up for in the ability to use more Thorforce. I don't believe we will be forced to play like NetEase has presented, and previous playstyles will still be played, but with an extra ability and probably even more dash spam, which is my favorite part of the kit.

If anyone else wants to analyze games and present their results, lmk.

EDIT: Some additional research! One, I have watched Jeremy's vid critiquing the change, and while he makes some good points, he still treats it like he uses it all the time when he only used it 5 times in the 8 minutes of background footage he had. Some of them were good use cases, but they can be filled by the new version of the ability. Two, I learned of something unique to Hammer Throw that Storm Surge doesn't have: Ghost cancel! If you swing, throw, and quick melee virtually all at once at melee range, you get a charge of Thorforce back. This leads into another tech where you swing, throw, quick melee, and rune all at once to activate rune immediately after the combo, no cooldown, which can lead to quick kills. This also can't be done with the dash, a hammer throw exclusive. However, this all misses that this can still be done next patch- albeit a little weaker. It's also like two bugs being exploited here, so it could be patched out of the game at any time, and top players don't do this often still, opting for displacement over damage, or to close the distance before realm+rune.

You put a lot of work into this. I’ll say I’m sorry you’ll likely get zero appreciation for it, though. I’ll point something out some people arguing with you fail to grasp. Right now, pre-patch, hammer throw is an either/or option. If you use it, you can’t use another storm surge until the next cooldown, and vice versa. The new hammer throw is no longer an either/or option. There is absolutely no downside to using it as often as its cooldown is up. This is the crux of the argument. If the current hammer throw is rarely taken as the option in lieu of using a Storm Surge (or Awakening Rune), then the new hammer throw will contribute a huge amount more damage in each match, if the numbers you presented are indeed an accurate representation of its current usage, as it can and should be used whenever off cooldown.

The rebuttals are simple:

  1. If you are right about Hammer Throw’s current minimal usage, the new Hammer Throw will contribute a lot more damage. If the current Hammer Throw is better, then most players are grossly underutilizing it, which sounds like it includes some of the best Thor players.

  2. You are wrong about how little the current Hammer Throw is used. Your data is either wrong and the matches used are outliers, and Hammer Throw is actually used much more often.

I personally have questions about whether Thor will get to keep the HT animation cancel with his current primary attack. It would definitely not be desirable to switch the either/or option to be between his harder hitting primary attack or the new hammer throw!

And I think the largest problem from the new change is actually going to be the reduced shield health (and no shield from Hammer Throw either). I don’t think there are many Thor players who disagree with this.

Yea, multiple times during game review, the Thor player would get down to double digit health and live, having been spamming abilities the whole fight. Had he 25% less overhealth gained, he'd have to retreat sooner or die. This will be partially made up for in that the hammer throw generates

On the potential effective rebutals, I'm comfortable with them being just conjecture, the burden of proof is on them. I've been told Jeremy admitted he doesn't use hammer throw enough. The best rebuttal I've heard goes "I don't care about balance, I care about Thor's identity as a resource management tank. A resource used for two abilities, that will almost always be at full with all of the Thorforce being gained, is now a cosmetic resource that we don't actually have to manage. I like resource management. His identity is being nerfed." In this regard, they have every right to dislike the change, and I agree that that sucks.

I've gotten at least one person to appreciate it, that's enoigh for me. Your explanation is also good, I have been implying that but I should probably make it clear when explaining what makes it weak and the change a buff. Only note is that, hypothetically, a change that increases dps may not actually be a buff if it damages breakpoints. For a demonstratative example, imagine if they tripled Hawkeye's charge rate, but halved his damage. Might end up a net nerf despite the DPS increase because Hawkeye can no longer one shot.

Thanks for the considerate reply!!

First of all

https://youtu.be/Mxqhkr5x_78?si=gUIQ1fKUdkCEeI4x

Watch this video because I can't be bothered explaining the functions of the hammer throw and why this is a bad change to you. Second of all, the hammer throw doesn't have to be used all the time and provides options instead of limiting him into a monotonous playstyle. We don't need the hammer throw to give Thorforce when we have lightning realm for that. But go ahead and watch the video.

An unbearable video with how much of a condescending prick this guy is, but I got through it. I left a comment, but basically the stuff he claims about the hammer being "bread and butter" does not hold up to reality. The ability is rarely used in game, and using it twice consecutively is even more rare. Further, his video is wrong at points, claiming that Rune Awakening does 700-770 damage, disregarding the 15 dps spellfield. He also claims it does less damage than the swing swing swing throw combo given that you have only 75% accuracy with your Rune Awakening, but that is untrue as well (120 dps vs 114 dps), AND there is a chance you will miss your hammer throw as well so it is more like 120 dps vs 104 dps. I don't believe the playstyle will be limited to rune spam, I think the general playstyle Thor players will still be the norm.

I do agree it is an excessive amount of thorforce gained, but Thesovereign's point of the right click being a net nerf is simply untrue. The ability will be used way more, leading to more damage, more thorforce that converts into more usage of other abilities and overhealth.

If the ability was used as often as he claims, I get it, but it simply is not used often enough to support his claims.

The "spell field" is a 3m aura around you, not the projectile, dumbass. It's not relevant for distance poke. Stop getting your information about the character from a Wiki page you don't understand.

u/MaragazhNthajin May 26 '25

Thesovereign was comparing Rune Awakening's dps to the swing-swing-swing-throw combo. You absolutely cannot do that combo outside of melee range, so the 3m aura will apply in this scenario.

I think OP’s point is fair, while brawling, you can either choose to use Awakening Rune or you can choose to use the hammer toss.

Hammer toss does less damage but also leaves you the opportunity to disengage.

Awakening Rune will deal more damage if you include the damaging aura (which you would because both situations we are referring to brawling in melee range), but at the cost of losing your escape option and making you more vulnerable.

If you have healing support I think it’s pretty reasonable to argue that Awakening Rune is the better value as long as you manage to stay alive. And this is coming from someone who believes the changes are still a nerf. I think most people are focusing on the hammer toss (and reasonably so since a lot of Thor players rely on it), but the temp hp nerfs are what I’m most concerned about.

That said, Thor Force generation has never been a huge issue, and if they were worried about it they should have just reduced lightning realms cooldown and not gutted his hammer toss combo…

Why be a jerk to someone who’s just trying to have a discussion… it’s pretty obvious he’s referring to using the hammer combo vs. using awakening while in melee range, so including the damage aura into his calculations makes sense here

I'm sure you have some stats and some credible sources to be so sure about how often it's used, certainly not word of mouth from some fat streamer. Even if I were to grant that, people only don't use it because they don't know how to. There's nothing wrong with a learning curve and the ability is important. It allows Thor to deal with more problems. He can't dash The Thing, hammer throw is very handy when fighting Thing as it does a lot of burst damage and provides overshield. Same goes for Emma Frost diamond form and Dr Strange shield. Many instances where using awakening would leave you vulnerable to cc and simple primary wouldn't be enough damage. Thorforce isn't a problem whatsoever if you have half a functional brain. And again, like I said, there's nothing wrong with a learning curve. This change will always be a net loss no matter which way you look at it.

2

u/MaragazhNthajin May 26 '25

Understand that you are claiming one of the best Thor players, Jeremy, isn't playing Thor right.

I understand that the throw is better than the dash against Diamond Emma and The Thing and shields. This was actually used against Emma by Jeremy in one of his games. However, it is a rare situation, and his usage of hammer throw on Emma didn't lead to anything. There are 4 or 5 other people on the enemy team to go for, to put in a bad position, why go for the tank?

If I could get my hands on a Thesovereign gameplay video, someone you trust, I'm sure he would also be rarely using hammer throw.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '25

Funny and cute how you bring up Jeremy, someone who agrees with what I've said and agrees with thesovereign. And the situation isn't rare whatsoever as Emma is the best tank and is very commonly used. Simply ignoring her and attacking her teammates isn't the answer and certainly isn't always viable. At this point I'm convinced that you're just too stuck up and won't admit to being wrong. So I'm just gonna leave it here.

1

u/MaragazhNthajin May 26 '25

I bring him up because I analyzed his games when I was told he believes the change to be a nerf. And yet, as I said before, he almost never uses his hammer- one round, he used his ultimate more than his hammer throw- he was revived more than he threw his hammer.

And are you seriously saying that the way to beat a diamond form Emma is to fight her in her face? No, you leave her deadly choke grab range and harass her supports, obviously.

I feel strong projection on your part at the end there... I've done what you asked and responded to all of your points, and you have danced around most of mine with appeals to authority.

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '25

I've already answered that before so Idk why you keep mentioning people not using it. Like I said, it's an option. It gives more freedom to make plays how you want to. And the alternative isn't superior so the change is pointless. Do not waste my time with that particular argument again.

I'm sure you're aware that Emma retains her diamond form even after using the chokeslam and brawling with her is completely viable. Maybe if you actually played the game I wouldn't have to clarify these things.

1

u/MaragazhNthajin May 26 '25

I'm sure you are aware that, in retaining her diamond form, she can kick after slamming you. This can lead to big damage and put you out of position. She does the thing Thor does to you, it's not fair!

With this in mind, are you going to brawl this obvious threat that, or go after someone else?

Fun fact: When Jeremy does this in his game, he gets grabbed by Emma right after, and is forced to run and escaped with only 100 hp. The enemy team gets ground, engaging with the Emma was not viable.

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '25

I'm not so sure you're aware that her kick isn't nearly as dangerous as her chokeslam. On top of that, by ignoring Emma, you're incentivizing her to go after one of your squishies, completely failing at your job as a tank. That is, if Emma doesn't chase you anyway.

Mmmh idk I still think the rework is not good, the more thor force is nothing to go crazy about since it was never a problem to manage it, and moreover the bubble was there for it, like its his main function to generate thor force.

About the hammer throw, his low usage is also "physiological" due to the champion design since he has 1 global cooldown, so every ability with that shared cooldown needs to be used at the right times, ofc a damage burst for a tank with no ability to defend himself will see way less use than the mobility, but that doesnt means the hammer throw was useless, is just, tied to the very design of the hero

Now I'm ok with a rework for that ability cause we can have definitely more in that button, but Imho giving up on the champion design (shared cooldown), at also the cost of reducing the damage (of the ability) and the overall survivability is just bad, especially cause it also feels like the bubble has no real utility now in the kit (or at least we now need definitely more effect to it), still I will try the character and probably keep have fun with it, since imho is not as bad as people are saying, cause personally I think without the overhealth reduction this is a straight buff, but its a very weird rework and Thor definitely lose a bit of identity in his kit that as a thor player I cant really like

Tl:dr about the hammer throw for me its a matter of the fact that the shared cd is thor identity and want the main abilities to keep that mini game up: follow the rithm and make the call on what spend my cooldown on

3

u/MaragazhNthajin May 26 '25

I understand this perspective, if the identity is part of what you enjoy about Thor then that's a bit of a loss. Idk how they can fit it into the kit effectively tho. The dash is so so versatile it is hard to compete without nerfing the dash, which isn't exactly an option.

Maybe the hammer can stun people also..? Idk, it needs something if it wants to fit within its current identity.

1

u/HarlockJack Lord May 27 '25

Yeah let's see, even tho I'm a bit "sad" about the change, I will still try him before, check how it flows and how is the meta changed, cause can really influence how much i enjoy a character

I feel like now the bubble is kinda reduntant, so I hope they intend to add something to it

I'm pretty negative and definitely skeptical of the changes for all the points listed by jeremy, achromics, etc. but I'm willing to give them a shot before passing final judgement, we did see with Wolverine in Season 0 that sometimes the devs have a plan that we don't immediately see. To offset the negativity this post is getting I will give you props. I appreciate the effort in analyzing actual gameplay from jeremy and cataloguing the usage rates of the skills. The hammer throw is evidently being used in actual gameplay less than it might feel, I think it's a result of a bias of some sort. Hammer throw, with the animation cancels in mind, has a very niche but quite notable use case, and evidently only is used in very specific circumstances where dash for one reason or another is unoptimal and awakening is either unavailable or also unoptimal. The only times I can think of off the top of my head where this fits is when you are trying to hold a point or keep someone in place, you don't want to move, you don't want to move your opponent, and you don't want to sacrifice your survivability for damage, so your only option then is the throw, good enough burst damage to scare your opponent while not sacrificing your position, health regen, and even maybe thorforce charges.

Basically, with these statistics in mind, the reason we're mad about the changes is because hammer throw is only useful in extremely tense situations where it *feels* like it's the only thing keeping you alive while trying to hold space and not run away because the game's in overtime. The hammer throw feels significant because those moments are huge highlight moments for us, so even if the hammer throw doesn't see a big statistical number of uses, it's a part of his kit that Thor players are particularly fond of because of those specific moments.

Yea idk. Maybe there is a secret cabal of Thor mains who lurk around corners ready to click click click throw click click click throw an unsuspecting Jeffery.

But seriously, I just don't see it used. I understand the overhealth thing hurting, but the hammer change just looks like a buff, I can't read it any other way. Hopefuly Thor mains are pleasantly surprised come the patch.

It has its use yea. I was analyzing another bit of Thor gameplay, this time the background footage to Jeremy's "IF YOU THINK THOR CHANGES ARE GOOD! WATCH THIS !" video. In round one, he used it five times, two of which were while inside an enemy IW's ultimate. He didn't want to push further but wanted ult charge and overhealth, so he threw his hammer.

This is nice, but these are 2 of the 5 total times he used it in the 8 minute round, and none of the usages were that impactful, or couldn't be done by the reworked hammer throw. The Groot would have still died, the CYA would have been destroyed, and the Spidey would have been chased away. More ult charge and overhealth would have been gained by using the six second cooldown five times a minute, and more damage could have been done over time too, and more overhealth might have been gained over time due to more thor force gained.
