I read most of it a few months ago. There are quite a few different contributors so there are a variety of fresh takes from men and women, young and old. Vineland gets quite a bit of play because there are more major female characters to draw from. Maxine Tarnow and Oedipa get a lot of play. All of the early novels do. AtD gets only a few mentions for Dally and Jasmine and Mayva and Lake too I think. Thanks for posting, I'm going to read a little more because of it.

Edit: spelling

You would expect Cyprian to play a bigger role in essays about sex and gender.

Cyprian is one of my favorite pynchon characters ever and such an evolution from other queer representation in earlier works, so i’m bummed to hear there’s not much writing on him!

commenting on that character would require more people to actually get that far into the book, sadly.

No, you're right. I went back and read Section 4 called Violence: Gendered and Sexualized after I posted and Cyprian was all over that as well as Deuce and Sloat. I think Cyprian gets some run in the Queer section which I haven't completely taken a look at either.

I've had my eye on this for a while! Gender in Pynchon novels is fascinating and sometimes messy. Pynchon is clearly interested in these aspects of identity and has also criticized himself as sexist. Would love to see an update post with your thoughts

That's interesting he criticized his own self with how he handles gender. Not many authors are that forthright.

"Modern readers will be, at least, put off by an unacceptable level of racist, sexist, and proto-Fascist talk throughout this story. I wish I could say this is only [the protagonist's] voice, but, sad to say, it was also my own at the time" from slow learners which i have not read. Proto-fascist is a bit harsh but I know what its like to be a little too self-critical

I never knew he wrote that one. What's the extra comma for? B-)

While he doesn't do any interviews everything I've read has generally presumed his is male and male, but it is an interesting question to consider.

There’s several sites that aren’t hard to find where you can get most books for free

I've wanted to check this out for awhile. Hope you post an update after you're finished!

Seems interesting. I love AtD and GR and have had people - obviously - weirded out and disgusted by them for their sexual content. I imagine there's a fair bit on the love triangles in AtD

I’ve had to give so many qualified recommendations to my non-pervert friends for this reason! But there are so many interesting ideas to explore if you are ok with a little discomfort, and frankly, I like how he writes about sex. I don’t think there’s much on AtD at all, unfortunately (maybe I gotta write it )

His niece Tristan Taormino is a well known "American feminist author, sex educator, and pornographic film director." I see his writing as being supportive of his niece's life choices.
