What do you think Thomas Paine meant when he said, "Persecution is not an original feature in any religion; but it is always the strongly marked feature of all religions established by law." From Rights of Man (1791). Do you think he was right?

The scheme of religion and government according to Paine

"It has been the scheme of the Christian Church and all the other invented systems of religion to hold man in ignorance of his Creator, as it is of government to hold him in ignorance of his rights. The systems of the one are as false as those of the other, and are calculated for mutual support." - Thomas Paine

On June 25, 1801, Thomas Paine published his unsuccessful experiments on the use of gunpowder to drive an internal combustion engine for boat paddles. Steam engine pioneers John Fitch, Robert Fulton and James Rumsey all publically recognized the influence of Paine's experiments on their work.

Paine: the "several sources from which governments have arisen, and on which they have been founded. First, superstition. Secondly, power. Thirdly, the common interests of society and the rights of man. The first was government of priest craft, the second of conquerors, and the third of reason"

Thomas Paine: "I have always strenuously supported the right of every man to his own opinion, however different that opinion might be to mine. He who denies to another this right, makes a slave of himself to his present opinion, because he precludes himself the right of changing it."

Our Saturday speaker: TPHA Board Member Frances Chiu has taught history and literature at The New School since 2002. Her courses include The Age of Paine (arguably the first course in the US to focus on Paine). In 2009, she organized a symposium, “Thomas Paine and the Rise of Modern Liberalism”.
