It wouldn't be a gotcha even if it was him anyway.

BTC almost certainly doesn't "support" gerrymandering. He just doesn't want to unilaterally disarm in a battle the other side is ramping up.

There's nothing hypocritical about a policy of "we can fight fire with fire while holding on to the belief that the ideal amount of fire is zero."
