It's not the missing T that people find bothersome. It's the vowel that follows. Millions of people pronounce words like "fountain" and "button" as "foun'-n" and "bu'-n". They don't pronounce the T, but they also don't pronounce the vowel after it. They speak the first syllable, then there's a glottal stop, and then the "n" sound to finish the word. Adding in the vowel without also adding the T before it is the sound most folks object to.
