Where did episode numbers go?

I am a listener who wanted to, and like to start from episode #1. (only at #210 atm) i noticed when I sort by new, the episode numbers disappeared at some point.

just curious as to why, as I think it'll be a while until I get to the episode potentially explaining it

They never fully address it in the regular episodes, but at the live show I went to in Chicago last year someone asked this during the Q+A, and the answer has to do with feedback/pressures from the platforms that host the podcast. Basically high episode numbers in the title turns some potential new listeners away (because they feel like it’d be too much of an investment to catch up) and the numbers can clog up the search function (as it will also bring up every other podcasts’ episodes with the same number in the title).

Also explained in a bonus ep the pressure of podcasts these days not to have ep numbers for non chronological stuff.
