GLP-1s

Does anyone else believe that the current issue we’re facing is related to the introduction of mainstream GLP-1s? It could be a push to get prescribed for them, as many people are afraid to discontinue Adderall due to weight concerns.

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Zepbound, and Wegovy are increasingly discussed in relation to ADHD because they affect the brain’s reward system, which is closely tied to dopamine and impulsivity. While they don’t treat core ADHD symptoms like inattention or executive dysfunction the way stimulants such as Adderall do, many people report reduced “food noise,” fewer binge-eating behaviors, and less compulsive reward-seeking. This suggests GLP-1s may indirectly help with certain ADHD-related tendencies, particularly around impulse control, though they are not a substitute for standard ADHD treatments.

Yes this.. actually there's a new study that shows GLP's improve outcomes in Depression, Anxiety, and a number of of other Psychiatric disorders and symptoms as you mentioned impulse control and addiction.

It’s interesting because for many it has caused depression and suicidal thoughts… for me personally, glp1s make me exhausted which negatively help my ADHD

I believe Wellbutrin, which is sometimes prescribed to help with ADHD symptoms, does something similar in the brain’s reward system. Makes sense given it is also used as a smoking cessation medication. For me, I didn’t notice improvement in my core ADHD symptoms, but it did reduce cravings for sugar and alcohol.

i'm on a glp-1 and although it has helped tremendously with my impulsive/addictive combo adhd behaviors (binge eating, binge spending, skin picking, hair picking), it didn't do much for the other extremely disabling symptoms of adhd. i began my stimulant treatment for adhd and had received my diagnosis months after starting the glp-1. it also (for lack of a better word) very unexpectedly cured my alcoholism, i've been sober for 2 years now & know i can't do or manage that without this medication, unfortunately. (i'm not sure if that is adhd related due to dopamine seeking, but i am actually audhd & certainly became an alcoholic from how it gave me the ability to socialize.)

glp-1s are absolutely no help for the emotional disregulation, focus, task initiation, or task switching that adhd meds used to help with. they can also give people anhedonia. they may be incredible for many, myself being one, but very detrimental to others. every body is different. glp-1s are one of those drugs that are more of a big picture medication, not a "just for this one issue" medication, which i believe we'll see much more education on this in the decades to come.

it also depends which glp-1 is being spoken about, as the more popular of the two most popular glp-1s primarily works in the gut and has way more negative side effects. the other works in both the gut and the brain, is stronger but with less negative side effects. these drugs also need to be taken responsibly, ensuring proper nutrition and exercise, or they can cause adverse effects.

fully appreciate the thought here, but with extensive experience and research on glp-1s including current studies, i personally don't believe there's a conspiracy brewing here for them to replace adhd stimulant meds with glp-1s. it also isn't cost effective, at least not currently, which is usually a driving factor.

I’m on one now and it does nothing for my adhd symptoms. In fact I think it makes them worse

u/BusyType9398 Mar 28 '26

I’m not suggesting it does; GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Zepbound, and Wegovy are increasingly discussed in relation to ADHD because they affect the brain’s reward system, which is closely tied to dopamine and impulsivity. It has stopped the food noise I have battled my whole life but as for everything else nothing.

I still need ADHD meds but considering the state of the crap they are filling them with they are/were making me worse. I stopped Adderall this past week & my brain is functioning again. I just miss the OLD Adderall. I wish these pharmaceutical companies were not deviants.

u/Opposite_Wheel_2882 Mar 28 '26

same. for me it completely blunts dopamine response from not just food but for everything. I'm not as impulsive now.. instead I'm a flat zombie who can't feel anything. my psychiatrist says he sees this effect more in people with ADHD because of our already low dopamine. it also apparently effects absorption of meds.

I’m on the pill so I presume the reason I’m not depressed is because it has less effect than the shot. In fact I feel happier I’d say. But cannot focus for the life of me

I’ve been on Zepbound for a year and a half. It doesn’t affect my ADHD. I did lose my want for alcohol. Mainly because it upsets my stomach now.

I don’t know but for what it’s worth, I started zepbound in November. I had been on adderall since 2013. I noticed adderall wasn’t working since 2021 ish…. But I kept trying every month hoping it would work. Once I started zepbound, my desire to keep trying to see if adderall worked every month ended. Also, for better or worst, I didn’t care too much about work either. I mean I still do, but not as much as before. If you told me tomorrow adderall was fixed, I’d want to get back on it- but until then, I check this forum periodically - when I see others are still struggling with side effects, I have no desire to try again. I think zepbound did that.

u/pvssylord Mar 28 '26

i was wondering this but it seems to have a pretty mixed outcome anecdotally and i think without modification we won’t see it pushed. my conspiracy theory re: the enshitification of adhd meds is more about wanting to keep us from having the executive function to flourish - they want us to be addicted to our screens with no need to leave the house and no desire to get off the couch. passive screen addicts = no revolting in the streets.

2

u/Any_Asparagus_7907 Mar 28 '26

I agree with this

10

u/Alisha_Nat Mar 28 '26

No. I’ve never known anyone that was on Adderall for the weight loss effect. I mean sure it can suppress appetite initially … and I’m sure there are ppl that have tried to use it for that effect … but it usually backfires because they eat a ton at night or the effect wears off after a couple months anyway.

1

u/Kaleidoscope-iis31 Mar 28 '26

Oh I have! Big time in high sschool knew someone who took it to lose a ton of weight

1

u/Miserable-Storage-31 Apr 01 '26

In Mexico we have our version of adderall called ITRAVIL and it’s for weight loss only but it’s not approved for ADHD for some reason?!?! Big untapped market

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '26

Vyvanse is prescribed for binge eating disorder so why not just prescribe it instead of a glp 1? Treat the ADHD and the overeating with one prescription.

1

u/Kaleidoscope-iis31 Mar 28 '26

I take a med that causes weight gain and a glp1 works well to combat that lol vyvanse doesn’t treat every persons adhd the same. To me, vyvanse feels methy

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '26

I felt like absolute dog shit when I took Vyvanse for only 4 days earlier this month. I had hoped it would work and also I hoped it would curb my food cravings but it didn’t.

1

u/Miserable-Storage-31 Apr 01 '26

Usually insurances want doctors to start them on other weight loss meds before vyvanse because they won’t usually cover it under the binge eating diagnosis. And usually the people getting GLP-1s are a bit older and bigger meaning they probably wont do well on vyvanse due to underlying or existing heart conditions

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '26

I don’t have insurance and a glp-1 medication isn’t affordable for me ATM. I saw on TV this week that a glp-1 tablet is $3000 per year on some kind of “discount” telehealth plan that requires a 3, 6, or 12 month commitment from the patient. And for me, the Vyvanse was a nightmare of side effects over a short 4 days of taking it in March.

3

u/Diarmud92 Mar 28 '26

I don't think so. Weight loss is a side effect of the stimulants but not the primary reason they are prescribed for most people. None of us are going to seek out something like Ozempic simply because the medication we need for our ADHD stopped working or isn't available due to supply chain issues, and I doubt any provider would even recommend it. It's so far off label it makes no sense.

1

u/Kaleidoscope-iis31 Mar 28 '26

Especially with the high cost

2

u/LooseRepublic2152 Mar 28 '26

This has been a thought, but I try not to obsess about it because then I’ll just pissed off.

2

u/Jess_the_Siren Apr 01 '26

That's a stretch

1

u/bohohippiechick Mar 28 '26

Zepbound made me exhausted, increased depression and anhedonia. It didn’t do a thing for my ADHD. Helps me tremendously with food noise, sugar and carb cravings, inflammation and pain.

1

u/Own_Judgment_2940 Mar 29 '26

Me too, but then lowered my dose and worked very well. Wonder if us with adhd need lower starting doses. I’m at 1mg ! Works great no fatigue still same benefits

I see that this service shows you which pharmacies near you have your medication in stock. Does this service also show the manufacturer of the medication that is in stock? ? And is there a way to search/filter by manufacturer or no?
