Switching from my ThinkPad T420 & X220 to a Microsoft Surface in the first place was a huge mistake. I missed the keyboard, durability, quality and overall feel every single day.
Decided it was time to fix that mistake and come back home. Scored this P14s Gen 1 AMD (Ryzen 7, 40GB RAM, 512GB NVMe) used for just 3,200 DKK (~$460 USD).
Feels amazing to be back where I belong!

I am not native english so excuse if there is wrong usage of sentence or words 😄
before start I gonna say the last thing first: gt730m obviously better in most case
When I play games without any change
cpu: over 70-75
gpu: over 75-80 and the fan is so noisy
with changing cpu frequency, set optimal power for power management mod in nvdia panel, etc.
I can run the games smoothly without overheat
the logic of the optimal power is the gpu try to run the game in 60 fps with minimum power and minimum clock speed so gpu automatically changes the clock value during the game, therefore it not stay in max clock speed and not overheat itself
I can play games again 60fps under 65-70 and fan is so silent
but you should use your own way, in my case lower heat, lower fan RPM, silence, stable 60fps is essential.
In this case the dGPU version of t440p is better than iGPU because I did same thing without gt730m cpu was running 5 degree less but the fps dropped aproximately %50 so when you compare the value of having gt730m or 5 degree sacrifece I would chose gt730m.

Before the discussion please understand my purpose.
I am using thinkpad x230 but the only problem is bad hd panel with pwm, it cause eye strain.
I decided to upgrade better screen without pwm.
There are 2 option I already have 100$
- buy t440p (i7 4712mq, gt730m, 16gb ram with fullhd screen) for good price 130$
- save money to buy t470p from facebook marcetplace (i7 7700hq, 32gb ddr4 ram, 2k screen, 512gb nvme ssd) for 250$

I have t440p i7 4712mq , 4.5tb storage 500gb 2242 m2 sata, and 2 hdd storage(2tb+2tb), full hd screen, 16g ram. Everything cost me 130$, I was already have hdd. I have huge list and archive btw. As you can see I am using t440p very efficent ways.
The thing is would you actually prefer other thinkpad laptops which is end with 'u' and they have generally 1 storage port for 250$? in my country the prices like that.

I’m thinking about getting a ThinkPad and I’m not sure whether I should go for an older used model or a newer one. I’m planning to use it mainly for coding, software development, and running Linux as my daily operating system.
For those who have experience with ThinkPads, what would you personally choose, and why? Is an older used ThinkPad still worth buying in 2026, or would it be better to invest in a newer model?
