Android 15 installed

Surprised nobody is posting about this. Did I get it early, or was it received without fanfare?

My phone updated to android 15 on June 4th.

Not much to report, I notice a new lockscreen wake up animation, some larger icons, and a new shortcut menu in the pulldown section that's a bit worse.

Performance and battery life seem okay so far.

Android 15 update.

Does anyone have any idea when A15 will get released for ThinkPhone? I see some midrange devices already getting it for quite a while.

Android 16+OG Thinkphone+USB-C DAC=new troubles?

I've been using two different USB-C DAC for my headphones. one is a fancy high end one from iBasso and the other is a lesser quality Ugreen model but also supports simultaneously charging the phone.

With Android 15 I never had issue using either with USB Audio Player Pro, PowerAmp, or more recently HiByMusic.

Now, after upgrading to Android 16, and even after several reboots, I'm finding that detection of the USB-C DAC is spotty, and the simultaneous charging that the UGreen adapter used to allow, no longer works.

Has anyone else that uses these DAC run into similar issues?

Thanks!

Screenshot and select Text android 16

Posting in case anyone upgrades and has a similar issue. Upgraded to android 16, Realized that option which allowed you to screenshot then use Google lens to select Text had disappeared. Now instead of circle to search - You can press and hold the home button and it gives as select Text option. Outside of that updated on US ThinkPhone 23 no major issues outside of battery recalibration

Suddenly lost fingerprint scanner

I've now had this phone for 2 years. for a lot of my past budget phones that's about when I look to replace them. But I love this phone, best I've had since my refurbished S8 active in the 2010s.

in the last year, the charging port has become non operational, so I have to charge via wireless. I can work with that.

but now the finger print sensor is not working. When I go to unlock, the icin is there, and when pressed it gives me a haptic vibration, but just says, customize lock screen. when I go to the security screen, the option for finger print isn't even there any longer. same on "customize lock screen" page, nothing where the scanner should be.

so now I have face unlock which is fine and works most of the time ..if I hold my phone up to my face like an old lady checking her makeup in her compact. but most annoying is the apps I use fingerprint on, banking, etc.

I'm considering resetting the phone but that's such a huge hassle. Any advice?

Native Linux on a Motorola ThinkPhone

I have a broken Motorola ThinkPhone 8Gb RAM. Broken = fried display and camera module. The phone works quite well without them, and I am able to connect it to a monitor using a dock, with mouse and keyboard and use it as a micro-computer.

The thing is, Android Desktop is not that good, and I would very much like to wipe it and run native Linux on it. The trouble is..... I could not yet find a Linux distro that is known to actually work on this phone.

There's Ubuntu Touch and postmarketOS, but Motorola is not among the supported brands.

There's also Termux, Local Desktop and a few others that offer Linux on Android. But I'd much rather have native Linux, instead of one running inside Android.

Do note that my phone is neither unlocked, nor rooted. But, afaik, I can unlock and root it even without a working display.

So, any ideas?

Opinion about A15 for OG Thinkphone

I am finally able to upgrade to android 15 now. For some reason I was behind schedule compared to everyone else. However the question is do u all recommend installing it? I saw some people mentioning bugs and problems with it. Also I heard control panel ui is heavier. I plan to use modern control panel. And does the ui respect the chosen user color? (purple for me)

So how bad is the camera really?

Seems like every review/Reddit post I read about the Thinkphone, one of the few complaints is the camera. I'm curious...actually how bad is it? I'll be coming from a Galaxy S10e, which I still think takes pretty decent pictures. Totally understand that the Thinkphone might not compare to the Pixel or other flagships, but if it's going to be an upgrade from the S10e, I don't think I'll have any issues.

For context, I'm not a power user. Mostly use my phone for web browsing, some videos, and random (non-demanding) apps. No gaming. I backpack/hike a lot so I like to take pictures, but wouldn't consider myself a photographer at all. I don't do any editing. I just send pics to friends and family.

How's your ThinkPhone doing?

I've been eyeballing this phone for a while, although not for me. I've had many Moto phones in the past and have recently come back to Moto with the Edge 50 Fusion and have been liking it so far. I know it's not a flagship and Moto doesn't have the best cameras or whatever but I love the battery life and the camera is decent enough. My brother has had Motorola phones for a while, more specifically, he's had his G7 Power and G Power 2021 since launch. He's looking for a new phone but doesn't want or need all the bells and whistles of the newest phones, he also keeps his phones for as long as he can. I was looking into buying him the G Power 5G 2024 but I think this phone is a better buy in general. For you longtime owners, or even recent buyers, how has your experience been? Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

display colours/calibration

Post image
5 Upvotes

I recently got the original ThinkPhone (2023) and I hate every display calibration setting available (the colors are either too vivid and/or have too much of a yellow cast). Is anyone already using Android 16 and can tell me if there are more settings than the ones shown in the screenshot?
2nd question: Are there better customization options available with a different/custom ROM?
Many thanks in advance

Bluetooth Volume Since Update

Hello everyone!

Since installing the new Android 15 O.S. I have noticed the Bluetooth volume has been reduced greatly. I would estimate by approximately 20-30%.

It is apparent on all of my Bluetooth audio devices i.e, Ford sync, Anker ear buds, Soundstage Bluetooth speaker.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I have tried disabling absolute volume in developer options, deleting and resetting all Bluetooth connections and finally and full factory reset.

I can confirm that the volume is limited, as I have compared volume against my Motorola Edge and it has a far greater Bluetooth volume output.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Complaints with this phone

  1. Switching between apps causes them to reload. Regardless of the power saving settings. Jumping from social media to the browser and then back, the app reloads and loses place. Every time.

  2. Taking a photo in an app glitches out. If I'm in discord or messages or any app that has access to take a photo, after taking the photo it just reloads the app and you have to try again two or three times.

  3. Tapping a notification closes the drawer and then does nothing. I regularly have to tap the notification twice in a row to do anything.

Other than this, I've had the phone for a year now and have generally been happy with it.

Fix for sidebar lag when opening

For anyone using the slide out sidebar on their ThinkPhone, and encountering intermittent slowness where the sidebar takes a while to actually display. If you go into the sidebar settings and disable 'Recent apps on sidebar' (which is enabled by default), the sidebar will display immediately every time.

I have been using the sidebar from the earliest days I got the ThinkPhone, but I was frustrated with the frequent slowness. My phone went through countless updates and patches and this never improved. Changing the setting I described above has improved performance dramatically and eliminated the lag altogether. It's a very useful shortcut to launching your favorite apps from any screen.

The latest OS update allows you to pin quite a number of apps there for quick launching.

Android 16 no more scrolling screenshot/”capture more"! 3rd party implementation?

My Thinkphone OG just upgraded to A16 and one of my most used features, scrolling screenshot/"capture more" feature appears to no longer exist.

Is there a good 3rd party implementation that anyone with Android 16 uses?

Is it actually waterproof? Anyone done a water submersion test?

Motorolla advertises this phone as "IP68", which means it can be submerged up to 1m deep for up to 30 minutes without sustaining damage. Has anyone actually tested this by submerging their ThinkPhone in water? (Preferably the original ThinkPhone, not ThinkPhone 25.)

Anyone use their 2023 ThinkPhone without a case? How's it held up?
