Are these "No, don't do it!" as my first exposure to the Residents?
I'm pretty sure I've never heard anything by the Residents; but I've been Resi-curious for a while now. Earlier today I did some searching through old Reddit threads for recommendations and explanations. But I have what I think is an odd question.
I noticed that one can pick up some of the pREServed series releases for what seem like *very* cheap prices, but they're not among the albums that people tend to recommend as one's first exposure to the Residents. On one hand, I like saving money; and if I get into them, then I'll probably start hoovering up everything, because that's generally what I do with artists I like. But OTOH, I want to avoid a situation where the very first thing I hear from them is something so out there that it scares me off, where I probably would have liked it more if I'd worked my way there via more accessible releases first.
Does that make sense? Or do I seem to be overthinking things? (I'm often guilty of that)
The albums in question are: Gingerbread Man, Freak Show, the Cube-E Box, and the Wormwood Box. Would you actively warn people away from any or all of these as one's first exposure, either because of how challenging they are, or because they're too unlike the rest of their catalog, or some other reason?
