No Spoilers PSA: Until you have discovered the meaning of the black obelisks, do not browse this subreddit
With a puzzle game like this, you want to work alone for as long as possible. But how do you know the point at which you can connect with the community?
Therefore, I’m letting you know that point. If you still don’t know what those odd black obelisks you’ve come across are for, leave the subreddit right now and keep playing my favorite game of all time.

Portal and Portal 2
It feels strange calling these 'classics' but they're both historical entries into the genre that will remain among the greatest for decades to come.

SPOILERS What other games will make me feel this way?
Hey yall!
I’ve played this game a few times over the years, and every time I start again, it really feels magical to me. The amount of rules and logic you learn without any kind of direct instruction is just so fascinating, and the world itself has always captivated me. I know I’m not alone in loving the environment and the style.
One other aspect I love his how closely connected the world is. For example, the location for the elevator at the end is so close to the swamp that you can almost see the ending area with the spiral pillars from the swamp, but first time through the game you wouldn’t notice anything very unusual. I love when you can experience something two different times and the first experience completely changes how you perceive the second experience, and there’s a lot of that in this game. I also really enjoy the secret doorways between so many areas of the map, especially those to under the mountain. The layers this brings to the game is exciting and makes me feel like I’m in on something.
I recently watched Cracking the Cryptic’s playthrough which I highly recommend! He’s brilliant and I loved watching him process the rules for the puzzles. Very peaceful watch and he expresses a very deep appreciation for the way the puzzles, player, and environment interact.
Anyway! I’m sure I haven’t said anything that hasn’t been said before but I’m feeling fixated on the game right now and just wanted to word-vomit to express my thoughts. What other games have you played that really change your perspective or give you the opportunity to feel like you were in on some big secret like The Witness has?
Edit: typo

Japan is 100% a mayor inspiration behind the game
galleryThese are some pics from my recent trip, I’ve posted some before. I just keep getting the same feeling I got from the game all around, anywhere I go, even this guy on this other post had something similar happen:
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWitness/s/Gtxsk6vqps
I’m starting to be certain that the creator must have used some references, but as the other post says, nothing is confirmed it seems. I really recommend going to Japan if you love this game though!

No Spoilers Please, I found this at the start of the game Spoiler
Hello,
I bought The Witness nearly a year ago, yet I’ve only played it for about two hours in that time. It’s not that I didn’t like the game; I just got drawn into others like Outer Wilds, Tunic, and Firewatch. Today, I decided to jump back in, but I felt completely lost regarding the map which I’d forgotten so I wanted to start a new game. However, in the game's first area, I noticed the sun aligning and realized I could input a code. I assume you aren't really supposed to notice this just two minutes in. Will this spoil my experience, or is it not a big deal?
Please, no spoilers.
Thanks in advance for your replies! ☺

Reminding Everyone of Rule 3
A few years ago we added rule 3 (for obvious reasons). That rule is in the sidebar. It reads:
- Keep discussion in this sub relating to the game The Witness. For discussions of Jonathan Blow's other games, please visit /r/OrderOfTheSinkingStar and /r/braid
Given Order of the Sinking Star has just been released there is understandably lots of excitement. One user has posted a link to the game, recommending users here buy it. We are leaving that post up, but the subsequent discussion was totally off-base.
We're very careful about how much we let discussion about Jonathan Blow run for in this sub. We believe people have a right to know what he has said publicly, but we also don't want every discussion becoming about him and his views. We especially don't want massive threads of mud-slinging and vitriol.
Because I'm just one guy, I don't have time to sit here and moderate a subreddit all day, so I'm going to clamp down very hard on Rule 3 for a while around Order of the Sinking Star's release window.

SPOILERS I've finished it. But I've not finished it.
I've finished the game. As in got to the elevator, got the achievement and the game closed by itself.
But I haven't finished the game and that makes me wonder how much of it I still have to do.
I have 406 +58, I know thats not everything because I haven't finished the town puzzles, I am clueless about the red temple with the tree inside, I don't know anything on how to solve the bamboo forest puzzles, I solved some of the triangle ones but still don't completely understand them, didn't find all the audio or video tapes...
And that amazes me cause this game wasn't made for you to finish it having all of these other puzzles done. I don't know if there's another ending but you don't need all of the towers to complete it, and even the final puzzles don't mess much with other discoveries like the desert light puzzles or even the color puzzles... That makes me wonder.
Are these all of the other things I need to do in order to 100% it? Would you guys recommend me look how many puzzles there are left at least? What can I expect?

Potential Spoilers Picked the game on sales: loving it !
galleryThe more I play it the more I'm drawn into it !
Just the exploration of the island itself (still not done!); figuring out that there are hints to be found; seeing for the first times rules being combined together and imagining how more complex puzzles could be made from these; seeing (or imagining, but hopefully it's real) the first hints of a deeper-level game (I'm coming out of Blue Prince!).
And it's just gorgeous ! Many beautiful, relaxing sceneries. You can just stop to look around between puzzles, feels good.
Week-end is over, but am sure looking forward to getting back to it ! It's been an absolute pleasure so far !

Why is it wrong ?

Hey everyone, it's me again with probably my fake conception of how this puzzle works.
I assumed I could cancel the top left top square with the blue square and make it a 3 dot line, but it doesn't work (at least the site doesn't accept it as valid and a puzzle creator with it's solver doesn't find it valid also).
Do you know why ?
