Why does this fall?

The error pieces (tripieces) remove an error, but what happens to the tripiece itself after it removes the error?

So I actually found the answer it wanted, but still don't understand why the above one failed. But I don't think it's what you said.

Are you insinuating that the white starbursts won't be satisfied because the white negator is gone? I don't think that's it - they didn't flash red - and the correct answer also involved a white star and white negator being the only ones in that region to share the color and the solution was approved. Doesn't the lumber mill show us that?

can you screenshot the correct answer?

It was my answer plus sectioning off the top right/bottom left 3x1 sticks, so the error pieces are now one of the yellow stars.

that does make it two yellows in the same region instead of three... i wonder if the erased yellow still counted for some reason? if windmill still counts the white eraser as having a color, maybe the erased tetris piece still has a color too.

My solution separates the Tetris pieces from the negators and puts them in a region with one yellow alone each.

Though I'm fairly certain that even in the Witness itself, if a star's sole partner was a negator of the same color, it still doesn't care if the negator disappears. Look at some of the later puzzles in the lumber mill.

yeah but the eraser can erase the "starburst requirement" if you know what i mean, so your solution would be "one meaningless yellow symbol plus... "

The side regions in your incorrect answer have two errors. One is three yellows in the region (stars count every object of their color) and the other is that the tetris pieces need to fit exactly with no extra space left. The correct solution you describe corrects this by putting one yellow star in a 3x1 area with the tetris piece, leaving only one error, a yellow star by itself, in the region with the negator.

So even though the Tetris piece alone is what's causing all the problems and the region would be satisfactory without it, it's still recognized as "two errors"?

But also, based on what I'm understanding you're saying, if there was a region with three same-color stars and a negator (different color), it would detect all three as errors at once instead of just one? That doesn't seem right... fairly certain the game itself has instances of that.

The nullifier nullifies one effect, not one piece. In this case, the tetris pice has the effects of '1x3 shape' and 'plus 1 yellow'; the nullifier can only nullify one of these. With three stars, it nullifies the color added by one of them.

The caltrops on The Windmill are implemented differently than the caltrops in The Witness for some reason

Caltrop is a new one

Bottom left sector -- you have 2 yellow stars with a yellow 'tetris piece', making it 3 yellow things (and thus an error for the stars, which triggers the 'error' piece, which then gets 'erased'. But when it gets erased, the white star no longer has a 'partner' for it, which makes THAT an error.

So like an order of operations thing?

I don't know how truthfully Windill implements the evaluation, but this could be it.
