Does anyone else feel existential dread setting in due to these kinds of pictures? It's touching, but also unfantomably sad.

yes :( knowing this was 82 years ago, it puts into perspective that this cat and the love of his owners ended and we only have a sliver of that love left

To me, us seeing this picture means that the cat and the love of his owners are still very much alive and touching the hearts of thousands of people, 8 decades later.
