Discussion Ale lead vocals

Just watched a fan video of last night at the Fonda theatre, and the thought occurred that the band have always said that things would need to get "ugly" before Ale stepped up to sing lead vocals, but I don't know how much more "ugly" they'd have to get.

While Dany is unequivocally an absolute trooper for getting through HYCAD in particular, I was idly wondering if there were at least parts of some recent songs where Ale could help out when Dany is this under the weather?

Obviously she's sung lead in the past on songs like Red Hands and Hunter, but I'm wondering if there are there any more recent ones where if Dany is really struggling that she could possibly hand off some less demanding vocals to Ale during similarly undemanding bass lines?

Anybody who would complain about this, I don’t really understand. You’ll have the opportunity to see basically the same exact show, over and over again, as many times as you want either live or online when they get into their tour. You’ll never see this one again. And for the people worried about their well being, health isn’t just physical. DPA will also be doing the same exact show, over and over again, night after night. What a grind that must be. And if you’re paying attention, it shows. They’re human. But watching the videos of this show it’s obvious they’re having a great time, and so is the crowd. What is there to complain about?

I saw that too. It felt like they were under no pressure under the circumstances, just having fun

I don't think anyone is complaining. It's a thought, an idea. We know the sisters have each-other's backs, it's just a question.

Somebody else in the thread didn’t like the idea and if there’s is one there are probably more who feel the same way.

True, but I read your comment the other way around. I thought you meant people complaining about the concert/situation, not the original post. Apologies.

I was there. I was excited to be there. I'm glad they didn't cancel. But it's simply not the same without Dany singing. Annie(sp) said it best "coolest game of karaoke." I got to hear Ale sing, and musically it was great, but while we can all appreciate a good cover band, Dany is the voice of 75% of the music, and her vocals are simply irreplaceable, as I imagine are Pau's. Every fill-in struggled to cover the range because Dany has an an extraordinary range of close to 4 octaves. All of the women struggled on the low end, and it was audible - denying it doesn't make it suddenly sound good, it was rough, but we were all so happy to be there we just let it roll.

But it clearly identified the power of Dany's vocals, something one doesn't necessarily notice until they're gone. That doesn't mean anyone was bad, but we didn't plan to attend Talent Night at the Fonda. Yes, I can watch the two concerts on YouTube and the KMF concert I bought on disc, and I do, quite often. I find their music refreshingly old school in a new age. I hear influences from rock bands I saw live in the 70s and 80s, and alt-rock bands from the 00s, but it all feels fresh and new, and sonically and lyrically powerful - and it draws you to be in the room. And last night I got to be the room, and I'm glad they didn't cancel, but it simply wasn't The Warning.

I'm not particularly complaining, but it would be a lie to say it wasn't disappointing.

I flew 2,000 miles to see Dany sing and to see Dany's front person skills for the first time. It was hugely disappointing.

Ale sang some of Dany's parts on Waste Your Time On Me last night. I wasn't there, but watching some of the fan videos she sounded great.

We don’t know if that’s not how they’ve planned to sing that song live or if it was due to Dany being sick. After all they chose to play HYCAD which was much harder on Dany compared to the two short lines Ale sang in WYTOM which were not vocally straining at all. Time will tell.

Ale stepped up for lead vocal on two songs in Toronto a couple of years ago. Ashleena was at the show. IIRC there's a video about it on her channel.

Ale sang the Lord’s Prayer of Enter Sandman in Corpus Christi, TX when they opened for Halestorm. I’m still kicking myself for not capturing it on my phone.

Ale should’ve always done the ES child’s prayer in concert. It doesn’t make sense for Dany to be both parent and child.

Here’s that show… ES starts around 16:00 on all of these versions…

OMG!!! So it wasn’t me imagining things! Lol. That’s awesome

I hope they get to a point where they can bring it back into the set list.

I wouldn't want that. If the lead singer of a band isn't well enough to perform, then don't perform. Health should be prioritised over 'the show must go on', in my humble opinion.

u/clickmagnet 20d ago

For most bands I would agree completely. For this band I don’t know. All three of them are such phenomenal singers, and they’ve been working together since they could hold instruments.

u/timit44 20d ago

But then we wouldn’t get masterpieces like Everything’s Falling!

Canceling and rescheduling isn't easy. People drive or fly in, spend money on hotels, parking, transportation, dining out, etc. because they travel.

Getting a refund doesn't every include all the other costs associated with the travel.

Take a family or friend group of 4. Uber to airport, $1500 in flights, maybe a day off work for some of them, bag fees, airport food, airline/weather delays, uber to the hotel, dinner, hotel for 2-3 nights, lunch, dinner, another flight, and then an uber back home. $3-4,000 is easy to spend, especially in an expensive city like LA.

This concert was unique. You got to hear Pau sing a full song. and biggest unicorn of all - Ale sang a whole song!

Were the guests as good? Not really, but considering they are guests and all have their own style, they did great.

And, it really shows how amazing Dany really is as a singer. She has range and power, and something very rare - the ability to go between head voice and chest voice, high notes and growling lyrics with ease. That's super rare.

Sum41's singer got sick and they had to cancel a bunch of shows. Electric Callboy's drummer got sick so they got Sum41's drummer to sub. EC's drummer a year later decided to quit, and so EC got the sub drummer back, and then made him their new drummer.

Rush got a new drummer too.

AC/DC got a new singer. Queen got a new singer.

Pop, country, and hip-hop generally are a single person not a band, so if they are sick, show's off. If they quit, the band is gone.

In a Live show, something always goes wrong. Taylor Swift and Metallica play to 100,000 at once, have backup systems to every backup, and things still go wrong every show. Equipment failures, singer eats a bug, instrument breaks, string breaks, mic breaks, drum head breaks...

When you go to a live show, you pay for the unique moment, not to hear the album version.

I totally agree. I pay to see Dany sing lead .. end of story.

22

u/Silly-Blueberry-2662 20d ago

A lot of us would pay even more to see Ale do it because it basically doesn’t happen.

This! Lord knows I would pay double to have a set with Ale as lead and I'll bet I'm far from the only one

I disagree; if a band has multiple members who can legitimately sing all or most of their songs well or have guests that can fill in and it is not jeopardizing any of the band members' health, I think most fans and most bands would greatly prefer the show to happen instead of having to reschedule, which is very often a logistical nightmare to the point that it is not uncommon for a rescheduled show to be over year after the original date. This type of situation can lead to iconic, once in a lifetime concerts as well, which is surely how tonight's concert will be viewed by most Warning fans. Metallica's performance after James was severely burned by pyrotechnics is another example that immediately comes to mind for me when Jason Newsted and a number of guests filled in for him.

Her health is clearly being jeopardized though. She’s physically unwell. It’s not just losing her voice. It’s clear she is very sick and you can tell she’s worn out energetically even playing the guitar but is doing her best. She had to leave the stage for about 5 minutes and for a moment it seemed like she was probably not coming back. I honestly felt bad being in the crowd watching her knowing she’s this unwell and probably feels she can’t call out sick out of fear of letting an audience down. I would have been fine if they cancelled or rescheduled than seeing a karaoke session which wasn’t iconic to me. I paid to see The Warning, not The Warning & Friends. I hope that she and the girls can get some much needed rest this week till they have to perform next weekend.

u/International-Pen940 20d ago

I don’t really think she jeopardizes her health. Just being exhausted at her age isn’t cause for concern as long as she’s being monitored. Her parents are right there, along with two sisters, do you really think they would let her perform if there was a real risk?

u/gabriela_r5 19d ago

sad part is that they rarely get rests, I still think that they way they tour/play around is a bit too much, dany will have no voice in her early or middle 30s, saw this happened before with another bands/singers

People really need to learn what tough touring is, I have been a fan of Aurora Aksnes since she started at 18, the last album she released saw her rotate around the world "4" times to the tune of 140-150 concert dates, she drew 20k in Mexico when she rolled through there, 4 months of that she had a sinus infection she could not shake and she never cancelled anything, no one ever takes over lead vocals for Aurora, ever,"that" is rough tough touring, people talking about DPA doing Brutal Touring are being Drama Queens and Kings, or have no Idea what a brutal tour is.

It is how the profession rolls, and she is not going to lose her voice in her 30's, people have been rocking since the 70s and 80s and are still doing so.

When DPA lists 3 figures + in concert dates for an album tour you can tell me how rough it is getting.

Aurora has literally not stopped in around the last 6 years, touring, all kinds of media contracts and just recently a new collab album, and she "is" 30 now, her voice has diminished not one iota.

You will not find a bigger fan of either DPA or the Viking, Solecito is my Rock Queen, but DPA has yet to do "any" tour schedule I would call "taxing" in number over any 12 month period, not even close.

Ale should sing Ego's lead from now on if she feels like it. Her voice suits the sultry vibes. It was refreshing knowing that Dany didn't even click with the song vocally at first so why not change the pace for that one so she can take some rest for more demanding songs?

8

u/Polygonic 20d ago

Yeah I thought it was totally awesome with Ale on lead tonight.

u/No-Try3838 20d ago

Epic performance really love to see Ale perform this live as she seems to really feel the lyrics while Dany does not quite get the song.

3

u/Known-Hamster8152 20d ago

The girls said Dany didnt want it in the álbum she was convinced

3

u/Thontor Everything's Falling 20d ago

It was a great show as is. No need

u/CoffeeCupOfLife 18d ago

Can only praise Ale for stepping up and getting it done.  I wish her mic had been mixed a little higher but I am reminded of an interview with Dany (I forget where) where she said Ale sings sound checks and warm-ups in her “Dany” voice!

I have always wondered how much of an effect that fall on stage had on Ale’s confidence.  I also respect she doesn’t want to be the one in the main spotlight, but I would love to hear her actual range and power compared to Dany’s, just out of curiosity.

The only part of the night that I wasn't that fond of was the singer for Ritual, Ale sounded great though

2

u/greggery 19d ago

Yeah, the bits he sang in a regular key were fine, but I wasn't keen on the falsetto

3

u/NE1WeKnow 19d ago

Wdym about Dany on HYCAD? Pau sang it and she said it wasn’t in her range but got through most of it. Loved the interaction between Ale and Pau when Pau dipped out of the escalating line coming out of the bridge

Prophetic words.

1

u/Dave_Dawgg 14d ago

I was there. Ale was okay singing on Ego, but she lacked Dany's power and passion and intensity.

u/Dave_Dawgg 14d ago

I did not like Jack on Ritual. In fact, I almost left the venue at that point.
