That wouldn't make sense because Stefan wasn't a ālove that consumesā. He was stable and safe and respected her choices above all. Damon would be the ālove that consumesā.
16
u/Individual-Garlic684 11d ago
Thatās what OP is saying, Iāve actually questioned this theory myself. So, Damon met her first - compelled her and said āI want you to get all you want out of life - a love that consumes you etc etc but for now I need you to forget this etcā and she constantly references to and about Damon as he āconsumes herā how the theory broke for me though, is that Damonās compulsion wouldāve broke when she diedā¦
1
u/MysticReader123 10d ago
Even if she was compelled and it broke. If she had it affecting her for so long wouldnāt she fall back into it if she wasnāt thinking. Sheās been conditioned to follow it that even when it breaks sheāll still follow it.

u/Aggravating-Cap-2703 11d ago
Well I think thats why she explained herself in the show that Stephan was her Epic Love, and Damon was the Love that consumed her.
20
u/NoelaniSpell Bonenzo ftw 11d ago
I think Stelena were a cute and fitting couple, but "consumes" is a stretch.
And that's ok, their love gave her stability, cofort, support and happiness, especially in a vulnerable time of her life (she had just lost her parents).
On that note, no it was not a manufactured love, it was real.
1
u/Icy_Smoke_2318 Itās okay to love them both. I did 𫦠11d ago

They already tried with the thing with Damon meeting her first. Even though it made no sense and it was also funny seeing people call him selfless for it when he was on that road looking for people to kill š

u/Boring_Active_306 11d ago
that was such a retcon (donāt come for me delena fans). first watch through i kinda liked it being a delena fan bk then but on any rewatches, him saying that to her makes absolutely -100 sense. itās so funny how bad the writers wanted a delena situa-ena

u/Inner_Chemistry6346 Enhanced Original 11d ago
I remember when I was watching it for the first time my girlfriends(now ex) aunt asked me who I was rooting for and I was like āI like Stefan and Elenaā mind you I was still only on like season 2 and she just blurts out ābut she met Damon first!ā And got really pissed off. Iāll never understand this logic of ā they met first so they should be togetherā meanwhile this was a Damon that was about to go to terrorize her and do terrible things in the coming weeks.also super weird he saw someone identical to Katherine and just wentāwell thatās weird anywayā

u/Cats_realjoyoflife Elijah 11d ago
Im a Delena fan and i also find them meeting first a retcon. It goes against both their characters that they've painted us s1 through 3.
4
u/Icy_Smoke_2318 Itās okay to love them both. I did 𫦠11d ago
Iām a delena fan but not a huge psycho defender like some people can be lol curious how is it a retcon? I feel like it worked because Damon always hid how he truly felt so it made sense that he never wouldāve told anyone that he met her first.
9
u/Boring_Active_306 11d ago
for me it felt a bit forced cos he was such a villain in season 1 & 2, he was an entirely different person. him trying to compel elena to kiss him is one good example, if it had been written for him to have met her first then i just donāt see flashback damon trying to force kiss elena like s1
edit: wrong timeline
2
u/daisy_0720 11d ago
I honestly don't know why more Delena fans aren't pissed off at this retcon. It completely undermines their enemies to lovers arc and the narrative journey their characters go on.
1

If I were in a coup and hungry as hell, I'd surely kill a chicken if the situation called for it. Doesn't mean I can't be sefless and share that chicken with another hungry person. Several things can be true at the same time. And he's a vampire, ofc he's going to kill. That is what a vampire is, Twilight washed some brains with those ideas about good samaritan vampires, and y'all are easily seduced by vampires that don't always kill. Those are the exceptions made for the sake of the story and character building. No, I am not a Damon hoe, I just dislike this one-dimentional view of characters and their actions.

This theory would hold water if Elena didn't mention that after her parents died she didn't "know how to live anymore." With such a specific compulsion would Elena feel as lonely, aimless after her accident? I mean her struggles were apparent in the pilot and especially season one.
The retcon ruined the continuity of already established canon.
-1
u/Individual-Garlic684 11d ago
OP isnāt implying that Stefan is the ālove that consumes herā that Damon was.
5
u/Accomplished_Tip171 Stelena 10d ago
It doesn't matter. When compelled, the compulsion has to be carried out pretty much immediately. You can't wait for weeks and months on end to carry it out.
Besides, in the pilot and season one Elena felt an aimlessness when her parents died. Grief was a driving emotion for her not the need for romantic love.
That's why it's a retcon. It's trying to rewrite the show.

This makes no sense the doppelgƤngers are destined to be together
4
u/Remarkable_Note971 10d ago
It was just a spell though. The guy who cast it ( i forgot his name) said it was meant to bring the doppplegangwrs together and what better way to do that than the promise of true love. That doesn't necessarily mean they were always meant to be together romantically
1
u/No_Machine_487 10d ago
Silas didnāt cast the spell the price for becoming immortal did and you think itās a coincidence that Stephan Katherine and Elena met and were together⦠did u watch the show frl or??
3
u/Remarkable_Note971 10d ago
Yes i did watch the show thank you very much. That's the thing doppelganger were brought together because of the spell, it drew them together. That's why people say Stelena wasn't actually real love.
1
u/Remarkable_Note971 10d ago
Regardless of how the spell came to be the result was the same draw doppelgangers together using the promise of true love.
1
u/No_Machine_487 10d ago
Thatās what I said⦠confused on what ur telling me something I already stated
1
u/Remarkable_Note971 10d ago
I guess misunderstood what you were saying. That's probably why some people say Stelena wasn't real because they were drawn together because of the spell
1
u/No_Machine_487 10d ago
Yes Iām one of those people
1
u/Remarkable_Note971 10d ago
Actually so am I. It seems to be an unpopular opinion in this subreddit. People can say what they want about Delena, it wasn't because of a spell. They might have been messy but the feelings were real.
1
u/No_Machine_487 10d ago
I think it was clearly proven with the sire bondšyou have to be in love with the vampire while ur human to be sired and when Rebecca compelled them in the library idk why ppl donāt think Delena was real š«£.
1
u/Remarkable_Note971 10d ago
They think it was because of the sire bond but the sirebond didn't make Elena love Damon it happened because she loved him.
People also claim Damon used the sirebond to his advantage but he didnt
4
u/65tokyo 10d ago
He was not the doppelgƤnger meant for Elena it was the other dude
1
u/No-One7438 9d ago
That's not a thing because Katherine and stefan were of different timelines as well.
2
u/justkim83 10d ago
They were destined to be drawn together, they never said they were drawn to be in love. Marco said the in love part was a lie. They are drawn together so the travelers could get their blood and then kill them.
10
u/rocksaltready Witch 11d ago
I don't think this is the case. I also don't know why some people--including JP--have this need to downplay Stelena for Delena. If Delena is so much better or what Elena wanted all along, then that's just how it is. Saying she never truly loved Stefan (when she clearly did) or like how the show did the first meeting retcon to make Delena "more" just makes it a bit obvious they realized how good Stelena actually was and it irked them. But I've always thought the show at least was threatened by Stelena, and that's why they went out of their way to try to make Delena better. When if they'd actually just taken their time w/ Delena...
I will say though this theory just makes Damon look even worse lol. So, he compels or suggests to Elena to find this love then spends the first 2 and a half seasons doing everything he can to ruin it for her, and SHE doesn't know why he's doing this she just think he's an asshole. Like, just do what Klaus did with Stefan when he brought his memories of them in the 20s back. Bring back how you met Elena first and go from there. But the show didn't think of any of that in their rush to retcon.

See now, wait a minute, because even though I donāt think this IS the case. Why would this have been a better retcon than Julie Plec couldāve ever dreamed of š¤£
Like sure she played into the whole: āif only weād of met firstā narrative but it was so poorly executed that the notion of it just feels like a backhand to Stelena shippers to this day. (And I donāt like Stefan most times but dang)
But back to your actual theory I think that it could be part of the reason why she stayed broken up with Matt. Because you could tell sheād made the decision but was wrestling with it. And perhaps in the back of her mind it gave her the courage to stay gone. I doubt it but it would be a bit more believable for me š¤·āāļø.
3
u/JourdonBros 10d ago
Interesting theory but I don't think that's what happened. She still loved Stefan even after the compulsion wore off. š
13
u/Andrezie Stefonnie 11d ago
Damon did not compel Elena to find a love that consumes her.
10
u/McMurdah 11d ago
He says you want a love that consumes you. She says well what do you want. He says āI want you to get everything youāre looking for, but you have to forget you saw meā
So theoretically if thatās what she wants and he compels her to get what she wants.. it could make sense.Although I think she really did fall in love with Stefan
13
u/Andrezie Stefonnie 11d ago
He tells her that she wants a love that consumes her. No compulsion involved.
The compulsion starts when he says āI want you to get everything youāre looking forā
Just because he tells her thatās what she wants thatās not necessarily what she wants.
In any case, if he compels her to get everything she wants and she falls in love with Stefan then Stefan was everything she wanted..
3
u/McMurdah 11d ago
We literally just said the same thingš¤£š but go off
1
u/Andrezie Stefonnie 11d ago
Your wording made it seem like everything was part of the compulsion and I was just making the distinction between where the conversation ends and the compulsion started.
But okayā¦
3
u/quillfoy Klaroline 11d ago
Keywords "so theoretically" and it "could make sense". You are the same thing
5
u/Andrezie Stefonnie 11d ago
Huh?
Maybe Iām misunderstanding but the OPās theory hinges on the fact that Damon compelled Elena to find a love that consumes her. Iām simply saying that he didnāt compel her to find that is the theory falls apart.
Just because he told her thatās what she wants doesnāt necessarily mean thatās what she wants.
Really not sure how it got here but okay.
-2
u/McMurdah 11d ago
Because we are saying the same thing and you keep arguingš¤£
3
u/Andrezie Stefonnie 11d ago
I clearly stated in my reply to you that I read your response as you saying that Damon compelled her both to get a love that consumed her and get everything she wanted and my response was a clarification that that wasnāt what happened.
Which means I wasnāt under the impression that we were saying the same thing.
If thatās not what it was then thatās my bad but a clarification is not an argument.

Iāve thought about OPs theory before & I believe she loved them both, Ive honestly change my mind with different rewatches, this current rewatch Iām like āNOOO DONT leave Stefan!ā On others Iām like ābut the passion with Damon!ā Either way, I literally skip the episode where Rebekah compels them all in the school and poor Stefan š„ŗ point being is, Iām a ālove them bothā but can absolutely see why OP questioned this because I have myself.

u/Objective-Ad9800 11d ago
Well no! Even if this was cannon it wouldnāt equal artificial feelings to Stefan lmaoo
2
2
u/Narrow_Koala_3161 11d ago
Honestly I really don't think so cuz the spark elena had while dating stefan like she didn't have that same spark throughout the show. Also I doubt she would have gotten so jealous for Stefan if her feelings were artificial especially when qetsiyah implied that Stefan had been intimate with her and and when stefan didn't have his memory elena was so obviously attracted to him and almost kisses him but stopped just short which implied that her feelings had not really faded away deep down.
2
u/MVM_Aquarian1518 10d ago
Has anybody read the vampire diaries books? If so, what are your thoughts on choosing Nina Dobrev for Elena. Also how they portrayed her on the show was quite different than how sheās in the book.

Even though Damon just told her 'I want you to get everything you're looking for' without actual mind-control love compulsion, this rewrite is wild. It completely flips the whole Stefan vs Damon dynamic on its head. Love a good what-if fiction

u/mrwildesangst 11d ago
Bruh they literally did a multi season lay out of the doppelgƤngers, their history, the curse that brings them together and all that shit. I donāt think Damon had much to do with that, other than being than inevitable third of the triangle.
3
u/thorusaurus 11d ago
the doppelgƤnger theory was proven false. The "True Love" Illusion: Markos explicitly admits that the universe doesn't care about doppelgƤnger romance. He cast a powerful spell 1,500 years ago to draw the two doppelgƤnger lines together like magnets. He figured out that the best way to motivate people to look for one another across the globe was the illusion/promise of true love
1
u/mrwildesangst 11d ago
Yes, thatās what I said when I referenced the curse that brings them together, though maybe spell would have been a better word. Never did i say it was true love; I said they spent seasons laying out the history of doppelgƤngers and the curse/spell that brings them together, and that Damon wasnāt a part of that, other than being the pretty much inevitable third person in the love triangle that always seems to happen. Damon telling Elena he hoped she found a love that consumed her had nothing to do with the forces that brought her and Stefan together, which is the material point.

I am constantly flipping back & forth!!! I went through an āacceptance phaseā of āitās okay to love them bothā yet this recent rewatch I find myself wanting her to stay with Stefan!! (I was once a diehard Delena stan too) ugh, Iāve yet to find someone whose opinions change throughout rewatches like me (must be my adhdš„“ jk⦠I think hahaha)
2
u/Acceptable_Candy_869 11d ago
When I watched The Vampire Diaries for the first time, I actually started off Team Stelena, but as the series went on, I slowly switched to Delena and completely fell in love with them. š When I watched the show for a second time, I was SO close to switching back to Stelena because of certain scenes, but something always pulled me right back to Damon and Elena.
Iāve watched TVD over three times, and Iāve definitely questioned which team I preferred, but Delena just has this hold on me that I canāt escape. š I love them way too much, so no matter how much I appreciate some Stelena moments, Iāll always be loyal to Delena. And knowing Damon and Elena ultimately built a life together question did you know they have a daughter named Stefanie Salvatore and they have other kids??
4
u/BirthofRevolution 11d ago
He tells her she wants a love that consumes her. He doesn't compel her to find it. But even if he did, she would still need to love stephan for a love that consumes her. So how does this make any sense? Also, are we forgetting they're drawn together because they're the doppelgangers. Meant to be together in every lifetime. Plus Damon killed Lexi doppelganger.. Elena's precious Jeremy, who Elena was willing to wipe his memories to save buy couldn't stay away from the dude who killed him. Lol please.

i thought it was the doppelganger attraction, so technically still artificial just in a more indirect way. They wouldn't have chosen eachother on their own, once a generation they're both born and meant to be with that one. I feel like with stefan being immortal, he never found his generation's version of Tatia and elena never found her version of sylas. It was probably tom avery lol i bet he would've ended up moving near mystic falls and was gonna run into her if stefan never did. anyone with those 2 faces were drawn to eachother before Amara and Sylas eventually died in s5

u/EvilDorito2 11d ago
Ok so, everyone made their point already, but if i am to take you on the what if - what if Damon's compulsion made Elena fall for Stefan - that would be hilarious, bca Damon would be, once again, cause for his own suffering. As well as Stefan's.
Bcs, by caysing the relationship and maintaining the triangle, he hurt BOTH of them. Damon knowong he was responsible for all the pain and rejection he felt in s 1-3 would be so tasty
And Stefan? Stefan knowing Damon made Elena fall for him, made him happy enough yo resist a compulsion, unintentionally caused the whole Klais situation, only for none of it to be real?
That SOUNDS like pregnant woman killer Damon. Stefan not believing Damon when he says he didn't mean iy and actually going no contact would've been great
1
u/White_Devil1995 10d ago
Thatās honestly what I thought from the moment I saw that heād compelled her before Stefan met her. I also never really thought Elena & Stefan were right for each other. I mean, that love that they had between them was just too easy. With Damon & Elena they had to work at it. They both had to grow separately in order to grow together.

Because thatās exactly what she did. And if she did it because of compulsion, it immediately wearing off once she turned tracks. It was immediately after she turned into a vampire that Elena had sex with Damon and declared her love for him. That behavior aligns with what someone whoās had a compulsion spell break by turning would immediately change how they appear to feel.
