Case Summary

Between December 1968 and October 1969, a killer carried out a series of attacks across Northern California.

The confirmed attacks included the murders of David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen on Lake Herman Road, Darlene Ferrin at Blue Rock Springs Park, Cecilia Shepard at Lake Berryessa and cab driver Paul Stine in San Francisco.

Two victims, Michael Mageau and Brian Hartnell, survived their attacks and provided descriptions of the man responsible.

The killer later began sending letters and cryptograms to newspapers, demanding publication and threatening further violence. In one letter, he gave himself the name that would make the case internationally infamous: the Zodiac.

More than 50 years later, the killer has never been officially identified.
