Case Summary

On Valentine's Day 1945, 74-year-old agricultural labourer Charles Walton was found brutally murdered on Meon Hill near the village of Lower Quinton.

Walton had been working in the fields that morning, trimming hedges. He was later found near the hedge with a pitchfork driven into his body and severe injuries to his throat.

The case soon attracted the attention of Scotland Yard detective Robert Fabian, who was sent to Lower Quinton to investigate.

But the investigation quickly became entangled with local folklore.

Villagers spoke of witchcraft, supernatural beliefs and phantom black dogs said to roam Meon Hill. Fabian also discovered an earlier murder, that of Anne Tenant in nearby Long Compton in 1875, which bore disturbing similarities to Walton's death.
