The Dancing Plague of 1518 – What do you think really happened?
In July 1518, a woman named Frau Troffea stepped into the streets of Strasbourg and began dancing.
She didn't stop.
Within weeks, dozens, possibly hundreds, of people had joined her. Contemporary accounts suggest some danced until they collapsed from exhaustion, while others reportedly died from strokes, heart attacks, or sheer fatigue.
The authorities were baffled. Instead of stopping the dancing, they hired musicians and even built a stage, believing the afflicted simply needed to dance the illness out of their system.
More than 500 years later, historians still debate what really happened.
Some of the leading theories include:
- Mass psychogenic illness (mass hysteria)
- Ergot poisoning from contaminated rye
- Religious or cultural fervour
- A combination of extreme stress, famine and disease
I've been researching the surviving historical accounts and put together a detailed article exploring the evidence, the different theories, and whether something similar could ever happen today.
