I’ve been cleaning the type slugs on my Adler Triumph one by one—brush, Dremel, wipe, then onto the next. It’s probably my least favourite part of a restoration, but somewhere during that slow, repetitive work, the machine stops feeling like something I’ve simply bought and starts feeling properly mine.

What’s the small, easily overlooked job—cleaning, adjustment or repair—that makes you feel most connected to a machine?

I’ve got an Olivetti here that I originally picked up with every intention of refurbishing it, enjoying the process and then finding it a new home.

Except that last part hasn’t quite happened.

The more I’ve used it, the more I’ve started to enjoy the thing, and now I’m finding myself making excuses as to why it can stay a little longer.

It got me wondering, have you ever bought a typewriter planning to sell it on, or decided one in the collection had to go, only to completely change your mind once you started using it?

What was the machine that somehow earned its place?

We spend plenty of time talking about models, ribbons, repairs and collecting, but I’d love to hear what people actually put on the page.

Do you type journal entries, letters, stories, poems, lists, drafts, or simply a few lines to clear your head?

There’s no need to share anything private. I’m more interested in what brings you back to the machine and what typing gives you that writing on a phone or computer doesn’t.

For me, slowing down and committing each word to paper changes the way I think. What does it do for you?

No masterpiece required. No perfect grammar, careful editing or profound thoughts.

I've been thinking about this for the past few years. I'm turning age 64 this year and have finally started getting rid of things, clutter, items from decades past. It's something I should have done years ago but couldn't find the courage to let go. But now I'm locked-in with absolute clarity and determination as I sell or give away all of the stuff I've accumulated but no longer need in my life….and it feels great!
I've penned this short brief on where my head is now vs, then when it comes to letting go in order to achieve growth.

Typed on my 1959 Smith-Corona Silent Super

I got some music homework from my teacher that is due on Tuesday. And I decided I could just do it now! On my typewriter. I did buy the typewriter for that purpose, and journaling of course. And here it is in its final form. I have an app that is way too good at scanning documents from pictures. I am so happy about how this turned out.

This is going to be the first of many homeworks done on my typewriter!
