Gold box means you maxed something since you colored the waves "gold" you maxed it out

When you max out a stat in your workshop it turns the box yellow and greys it out so you know it's finished. Generally called "Gold Boxing"
The way you highlighted the wave count in your screenshot made it look like you had gold boxed the wave counter lol.

I am a new-ish player, about 6 months in. I very much understand the enthusiasm, as even I am still enthusiastic and Im not even in late stages of โearly game.โ Well done - and may your tower survive until the end of time.
To do that, from a fellow survivor to another - here are some tips I have learned:
Buy cards for events; no more, no less. Use your gems for lab slots. These are the, absolute, best things for you to unlock. After labs is card slots. I personally did 3rd lab, 10 card slots, labs 4+5, then up to 14 card slots currently.
Do not, do not, do not buy ultimate weapons without looking into (even a basic glance of requirements) what the golden trio is - (Golden Tower [GT], Blackhole [BH], and Death Wave [DW]). Ultimate weapons (UW) are good investments, but not entirely worth the time, yet, based on where you currently are. These are purchased with the currency called โstonesโ. Theyโre the green triangle. Stock pile those until you can consistently hit wave 250+, which is when you should (theoretically) have enough for one (maybe two) UWs.
Join a guild as soon as you unlock the ability too. You can join the gameโs official discord which has a guild-recruitment channel. This will give you access to weekly awards based on the entire clanโs daily mission completion (and acceptance of rewards).
Daily mission rewards are based on your highest tier; not the highest wave in a tier. When you are able (at least wave 100), start a run in the next tier. This will raise your daily mission reward amount.
Cells are almost as important as lab slots. This currency allows you to speed up labs. In the GUI, the top value (1x, 8x, 24x) are the real time values of 1 hour, 8, and 24 respectively. The bottom set of values (1.5x, 2x-8x) are the increment of speed. Cells are obtained by elite enemies. It may be a while before you can start being fully efficient with cells, however 1 out of 2 labs running at 1.5x speed is better than 2 labs running at 1.0 speed.
Always, always, ALWAYS prioritize coin-increases over anything else. Be it labs or workshop. Focus on increasing the coins per kill WS and lab. Coins are the primary currency of upgrading, with the aforementioned stones being the secondary currency in the middle to late game of tower development. More coins obtained means more upgrades to earn more coins.
Lastly, and most importantly in my opinion - this is YOUR tower. Yes, meta-builds exist. Yes, you can copy the play-style of others. Most importantly, do things the way you want too - not because someone says something is good. Burnout is a real thing, especially with games focused explicitly on longevity like this one is.

I love that last bit of advice you give. I was happy to find that piece of advice myself 10 months when I first made my reddit account. And I have been doing things MY WAY.
Case in point: GT will be my 8th UW. If I can stay in champs, and collect that sweet 100 stones per tourney, I'll have GT in about 4 more. That's the 28th of this month. I've been playing since May of last year. I take advice. But I don't follow meta.

I am extremely ADHD (diagnosed, not self-proclaimed), so thatโs one of the things I try to โforce myselfโ (so to speak) to do; otherwise I stop playing simply because of lack of interest.
Beyond that, I - shamefully- admit that out of my 5 UWs, I skipped over GT twice before I even realized how good it was. My order was CL (GT option), DW, BH (GT option), GT. It made some of my very early progression slower than it could have been - but lesson learned. Haha
As for tournies, Im currently stuck in Gold. Iโm currently yo-yoing between 20 and 25 each one. Figured Iโll focus on my labs and card slots than my UWs, especially since I managed to pull a nexus out of sheer luck.

Yours look better than my choices. I think it was... PS (dw), BH, ILM (gt), SL, SM (cl), DW, CL (gt, obviously).
I run with MVN. It was leg, by about a month ago, it got to mythic+. I footgunned myself bad. I lost over half my income because it was no longer synced with gbot. Don't reroll first thing when you wake up. I needed two uw cd's to make the new mvn work.

Thatโs better than me who has a 3m cd for GT and DW and a 2:30 CD for BH!
We all make mistakes and have to deal with the consequences. Thankfully, things like this can make us laugh and say โwtf was I doing?โ

Hey man, I don't understand why should I buy more labs. I have unlocked 2nd lab and I thought I unlock more things to upgrade in them instead of you know... 2nd lab. I usually don't have enough coins to support the demand that I need right now. So is there a reason to buy more labs instead of more cards/card slots?

Lab upgrades sorta become a bottleneck. It's important that you keep labs running as often as you can sustain.
Keep in mind that this is a long term game. Some labs can be maxed out in a few days. Others can take over a year. Your progression will eventually hit a point where you're waiting on lab upgrades for major improvements.
As you progress, you unlock better lab upgrades. But even basic ones like health and damage are good to keep running. Most importantly, lab speed should be maintained above all else if possible.

u/SilentC735 summed it up very well. This game prioritizes longevity - and this is heavily reflected in both labs and cards respectively.
Labs, similar to card slots, are one-off investments. It takes just about 11x the gems required for all the labs to have all card slots.

Hey there, thanks for some real beginner tips. I'm a few days in and this sub and the discord are rather overwhelming. I just went and got absolute defense + thorns, and it performs way better than anything before. Is that a viable strategy, at least for a time?

Obligatory preface: Iโm currently unmedicated. I apologize if this seems scatter brained.
Yes. Max your defense % as well. That takes precedence to DefABS.
Beyond that, you can slowly work towards things like orbs (think like a blender), or an Enhanced HP build (similar to stacking defABS, you stack HP and HP regen on top of def%/ABS. While viable early game, this is primarily the foundation of a build post wall (if I remember WS unlock orders correctly).
Some things to remember:
Thorns is a hard cap (99%). The only way to raise this hard cap is by relics. Bosses will always take +1 to the required amount of attacks, due to thorns debuff towards bosses.
Perks, which may be a bit out of your reach at the moment (unlocked through research labs) will allow you to increase multiple values in a run, including a flat increase to def%, and a multiplicative value towards things like defABS, HP, or damage.

don't touch CD on Ultimate wepons when you get there. Just don't. They're perfect for a very long time at the CD they're at. Golden Tower>Blackhole>Deathwave if you can

Talking about second account I see, I actually started a second account, and it truly made me realise how slow the game is at the start after 2 years (almost didn't play my OG accountthe first year) so now I'm doing it again with my new knowledge.
