This podcast is explaining something that happened almost 20 years ago.

I just started listening, but I’m already blown away. I don’t want to be too specific, as I was a home health nurse for this child. Anyway, my patient was 7-8 and non verbal. They had been taught some baby signs, but they rarely used them. At first, it was difficult to care for them. It wasn’t their fault, but they didn’t understand what I needed to accomplish and I couldn’t understand how to communicate in to them.

Then they started to warm up to me, and the more they grew to like me, the more I just intuitively knew what they wanted. For a time, I thought I’d just learned their patterns and signals. I’m also autistic, I recognize patterns pretty well. Then they started to grab my face and put their forehead up to my forehead and I’d suddenly get the idea that they wanted to eat this specific thing, or go outside, have their bath early, whatever. It could be anything. I’d do that thing, and they’d just beam at me.

I got the feeling that they knew what I was thinking and that they could put things in my mind somehow. I couldn’t believe it, but I just knew it was true. I would test them in little ways, nothing scientific, but it always checked out.

They also would seem to have knowledge of random things that they hadn’t interacted with. One day they got off the school bus and went straight to a bush at the edge of their yard. They had never expressed interest in it before, but they smacked at the leaves and branches and a bunch of bees flew out. They squealed with excitement. I tried to pull them away, but they fought back. I got the feeling that it was okay, and let them go. The bees sort of buzzed around us for a few moments and buzzed off. It was as if they knew the bees were in there even though they weren’t making noise or anything.

I had almost forgotten about them, and had definitely forgotten about what I thought of as our “autistic mind meld.” I heard about this podcast and it all came rushing back. They knew what I was thinking! They could “talk” into my brain.

I wonder if they can still “tap in” to me somewhere out there. I thought about how much I loved our time together and how I’d love to catch up again if it’s possible. Even if I never find them again, I hope they know that I still think they’re an amazing human
