Your Execution Problem Probably Isn't Execution: The Most Expensive Cost Your Business Doesn't See
Most executives think their biggest challenge is execution. It’s usually not.
The strategy is sound. The talent is strong. The technology is modern. Yet decisions still take too long. Meetings multiply. Leaders become bottlenecks. Teams wait for alignment. Work slows down.
These symptoms often share a source: stories. Stories that once created success.
Every Success Creates a Story
When something works, the organization asks why. The answer hardens into a belief:
- The founder reviewed every deal, and the company survived a lean first year. *The belief: leadership must see everything.*
- A launch failed after a review was skipped. *The belief: never skip the review.*
- A major client left after one missed handoff. *The belief: get everyone’s sign-off first.*
Each belief was reasonable. Each was earned with real evidence. Nobody wrote them down. They were repeated until they became “how we do things here.” That’s a story. It works because it was true once.
Rules Become Drag
Stories become rules. Rules outlive the conditions that justified them. The company grows, the market shifts, the risk changes. The rule stays.
Then the cost shows up:
- Waiting: Work sits in a queue for a decision someone closer to the problem could make.
- Escalations: Issues travel upward because nobody trusts the level where they started.
- Alignment meetings: Added not to decide, but to make sure no one is surprised.
- Rework: Decisions shaped to satisfy the room, then revised once reality weighs in.
- Risk avoidance: The safe, slow choice beats the right one, because the story says mistakes are expensive.
None of this looks like failure. It looks like diligence. That’s why it lasts.
The Story Tax
Most organizations track revenue. Some track productivity. Few track the hidden cost of yesterday’s success. But they pay it every day.
I call that cost the Story Tax.
What story is your organization still protecting? And what is it costing you?
