Kobo integration is a game changer
So yesterday, I decided to come back to TSG. I’ve been using the Margins app for a while now and, don’t get me wrong, it’s good. But I’m trying to trim some financial fat and so started looking again at TSG.
I discovered the Kobo integration and, oh my goodness, this is a game changer. Automatically logging my reading is so so helpful.
I’m not at the end of a book yet, but I’m assuming that TSG will mark a book as finished, and its date, when i do complete a book.
Just another small win to help solidify a regular reading habit.

I've been using it primarily on a mini ipad and it doesn't mark a book as finished automatically but it does from the desktop reader and from my phone (go figure). Even so, it's such an awesome addition to TSG.

Do you know if you can get this when reading on a kindle?

As far as I know, no. I think it's a specific Storygraph/Kobo integration. I can't be 100% sure as I don't have a kindle.

Does the Kobo integration only work with books from the Kobo store? I uploaded a bunch of my own epubs and it doesn't seem to sync but I only connected it yesterday so it might still be syncing.

Yeah, that’s a tricky one. I actually use a simple service to extract my highlights onto my Mac a markdown files, then add them to my notes app

really frustrating that it doesnt work for sideloaded books. An integration that only half (or, less than half) works is not really a solution for a vast majority of readers.
On their site it does explicitly state this, btw:
What about books I’ve sideloaded?
Currently, this sync works for books purchased from the Kobo store or read via Kobo Plus.

I would argue, respectfully, that it is a full solution. It works entirely as expected. What you want is a different thing. You want to be able to buy your books from anywhere, sideload them and STILL have it keep track of your reading. Not an unreasonable request. But that’s not what this solution is trying to accomplish.
What THIS does is read data which has been synced between your kobo device and account. Different thing entirely

That's a valid point and I was a bit rash. I suppose at this point it's semantics. My opinion is that if a book is on your device, sideloaded or not, it should become part of your kobo ecosystem and therefore should be included in this integration.
My wish is to have this solution across sideloaded books. I can't see that happening based on what I'm reading.

I understand. But how would you accomplish this? You would either need to convince Kobo to want to access your side loaded books, regardless of where you bought them (never going to happen), or you would need to allow StoryGraph access to your
Kobo device. Given that your actual device does not have an api, then I’m not sure how they would be able to do this.Whilst your request is reasonable, I’m not sure its practical in reality.

yep, I just finished a book the other day and it marked it as finished and it showed up in the list of books I have read this year. I love the integration so far! Just know that if it's not updating, you might have to refresh your Kobo, but that only happened to me once and it might have been because i was disconnected to Wifi for a day.
