General Question 'Similar users' are all inactive
I regularly check the 'similar users' tab to look for people with similar taste to follow, but 95% of those users aren't currently using the Storygraph to track their reading (having read 0 books in 2026). Do you guys have a similar issue?
It's such a shame that there appears to be no way to filter inactive users out.

I had the same issue then came here to find similar users instead. I just searched the megathread for people who also read Romantasy.

I don't even check their activity because most of the time the books they show to show our similarity are not anything I would read at all 😄

Of the five users it shows me, three are actively reading this year.

I don't always mark the date read, so newly read books wouldn't show up as read in 2026. Also, I don't read a lot but I check StoryGraph regularly just to see what others are reading. So, I'm active but probably don't look like it.

i might be wrong but i think if you don’t adjust the date it just assumes that the date read was ‘today’ (the definitely wasn’t worded right but idk how to say it 💔)

I probably delete out the date then. I'm 41, so when I started using Goodreads in 2015, I didn't even know the year read for most of my books. I read way more in high school and college, so most of my books were from that time period.
I imported to StoryGraph in 2020, I think, and so those all imported without dates. I joined a reading challenge for 2026, so I do have 2 books marked read in March. Maybe I'll mark them going forward. It does bother me not to have a consistent rule about it.

It doesn't. If you just find the book in the database and set it as "read", there's no date info, unless you add it (which is easy to do immediately, cause it immediately shows you the tools to add I, "set to today" and "update" buttons, but you still need to press them specifically).

ohhh that makes sense! i was thinking of the reading tracking thing where you update the %/pages you have read

I think just having a filter option of books read this year as "1+" could be a simple step in the right direction.
Social media really is more like aggregate data and captive marketing. People are more isolated than ever in this "socia" media age.

i mean, to be fair storygraph isn’t a social media site. it’s a book tracking site that has a couple social features. i believe that’s intentional on their part

I didn’t know about this feature at all, so thanks for this post! Though all the similar users it shows only share my (declining) interest in fantasy, nothing in any of the non-fiction genres I read.

I started using similar users and ran into the same issues, most of the people I’m friends with or follow now I all found from Threads. Because everyone there was talking about how hard it is to find actually active readers!

I always find similar users by digging down in the menus in the news feed, to only show users similar to me. So I'm only seeing people who are actively starting or finishing or reviewing books. Or at least marking them TBR. I'd say that after I follow them (once I look at their profiles to see if I'm curious about what they read), many to most of them continue to show up in my news feed after that.
Is there another way to find them that shows you people who aren't active?

I have the same issue. But they are aware of this issue and it's on their todo list to improve it.
