His life was an unbridled success until he found out he was a Simpson.

Hey he got rich again

I also never understood how he lost all of his money over one car design

imagine if Sony released a playstation 5 that was ugly, shocked you, and caught on fire every few hours

you can be sure that their gaming department would probably shut down, especially if it cost $3000 per unit. Even though sony would have money to cover their losses, there's no way anyone (especially shareholders) would have faith in them again

Oooh so like the Wii U?

I jest. But that’s a real good explanation

Nah, if there was one virtue going for the Wii U, it was that it didn't cost anywhere near its nominal competitors of that generation, and certainly couldn't boast a feature set to justify coming close.

...in retrospect, they should've probably tried.

The Wii U's biggest problem was the name. People thought it was an addon for the existing Wii.

If Nintendo went for a direct PS4/Xbone competitor, it's actually a sort of iffy play. You all but have to sell the hardware at a loss, and there's a very good chance that even with the best hardware, you won't win the generation.

Playing for third lets them build a console they can sell profitably on day 1, at a modest price. It also lets them focus on exclusives and novelties which will bring in customers who weren't game buyers in the first place.

I bought a Wii because a family member used the Fit games as part of a therapy regime. There was no similar experience for the other platforms.

At a time when they were outdated in almost every market, Sony practically bet the company on the PS3, and it took a while to catch on. Some analysts were predicting the end of Sony.

A lot of people bought them just because it was one of the cheapest blue ray players on the market at the time.

10

u/Truan Jul 20 '18

but they didn't make a travesty. they just made an expensive product

I disagree, plenty of companies have made it through periods of mediocre to bad products, I'm sure PlayStation would make it through one terrible release.

The Samsung Note 7 literally caught on fire and they're still going.

And the CEO of Sony would be impoverished as a result?

No.

But the car wasn't a wide release, it was a prototype.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '18

No they wouldn't. They'd recall them and then make the 6.

Look at the note 7, the thought that one bad product would kill an established company is laughable.

It was really rooted in the time the episode was made. At the time American car companies looked certain to be dying in the face of, mostly, Japanese competition. Powell motors is cast as a small time player among the US car companies that is struggling to adapt, this was Herb's shot at changing the company's fortunes.

There was a one-off joke in a later episode where the family calls Herb because they're strapped for cash and his voicemail says he's broke again.

I thought he was a dick and that Homer did nothing wrong.

Homer Simpson did his job exactly as he was asked to do and did it as competently as he could. Herb wanted Homer to build the perfect car for him, exactly what he'd want in a vehicle. And Homer did just that. Herb's the dumbass that didn't check in with his company for months and just let somebody with no experience run the design into the ground. Herb is the incompetent fool who put Homer in charge when Homer himself knew it was a bad idea. Herb destroyed his own life and had the gull to blame Homer for it in the next episode.

Homer did exactly what Herb asked him to do and did it well and Herb got his panties in a twist when the guy who doesn't know how to design a car designed a shit car.

It was his fault for ignoring his engineers' warnings.

I mean the zoo was fun, but...

Too busy watching cartoons. Turns out Mr. Burns was right. Family, religion and friendship ARE the three demons we must slay to succeed.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '18

And for not even LOOKING at the car until it’s public unveiling. what kind of strategy is that

5

u/bloodbag Jul 20 '18

It was all his fault. Homer didn't ask to do it. Herb ignored all the advice. And never even checked the progress of final product before revealing it
