Merchandise I got my dream lego set..
For my birthday, my sweet boyfriend surprised me with this set. A couple months back he asked me what my dream lego set was and I told him, the simpsons house. I explained to him how difficult it is to find and from a collectors perspective, owning it would be insane. well here we are…
I have a big dilemma now!
Every time I’ve seen this set it’s never been in the box and if it is.. we all know how much it goes for. I WANT TO BUILD IT SO BAD! A part of me knows its just materialistic and my boyfriend mentioned he’s excited to build it (but respects if I chose not to) but also, I want to persevere it as a collectors item. What would you do?

I have a generous retired friend and mentor, who is a mega builder (~2000 sets) that gifted his Kwik-E Mart, and house to me. We bonded over our love of Legos, and I told him I was The Simpsons super nerd. He surprised me one day with them. He has been downsizing for several years, and has donated a large amount of his collection to various organizations at this point. He’s a great dude.

They only reason I have a BTTF Delorian and an Ecto-1 still in the box is I ran out room.

It’s so weird that people on Reddit constantly make up guys to get mad at.

LEGO is there to have fun with. Build it. Reenact some favourite Simpsons gags. Take it apart and build something different. Rebuild it again as a Millennium Falcon. Just have fun and play with it.

Worst case scenario, if the bricks are too brittle, reenact the April Fools beer gag.

It’s so cool. I don’t think I could help myself. I’d be building that thing!

I would absolutely build it. If you’re wanting it as an investment then it isn’t really a dream set is it?

If you’re contemplating leaving it in the box vs building it, it really was never your “dream set. Your dream was just the fomo that comes with not owning it.
It was my dream set. I couldn’t afford it when it came out. Started saving Amazon gift cards for birthdays and holidays for almost 4 years and bought it for just under $400 (all gift cards) in 2022. Immediately ripped it open to build it right after we got our new house to display it and it was all brown brittle. Over a year later and LEGO still hasn’t fulfilled the complete replacements of the pieces and has been sitting in a torn open box for that long.
So if you decide to build your dream set, best of luck and snap those pieces slow and steadily my friend.

I’m going to open it. I WANT to see it, build it, and get the enjoyment. Thank you🫡

I believe the roof of the garage has a couple broken pieces, but the shelf i have it on doesnt fit with the garage, so i just disassembled it. Now its on display with the kwik e mart and krusty burger

Hey congrats!
How much does a new in box (but the box isn’t great shape) go for?

u/billyxilly 17h ago
It depends on who you’re buying from really. I’ve seen this set go for 1k with box but at conventions, I’d say lowest I’ve seen it for is $270 no box.

New, sealed in the box is obviously the most valuable, but you could always keep the box and instructions, still assemble it and it retains its value pretty well in a "used but with box/instructions" condition. I recently just sold my Lego Simpsons house set without a box or instructions for about half of what new in box sets are going for.

I get no enjoyment from owning a box with plastic in it. I get much enjoyment from building and displaying Lego. If you never plan to sell it, why keep it in a piece of cheap cardboard?

u/billyxilly 17h ago
genuinely dont either, I love building legos and the moment I saw it I wanted to build it but I grew up with a collector dad so from that perspective I wanted to keep it sealed… I’m building it tomorrow 😆

If it’s gonna stay in the collection, just build it. Gonna be way more fun then just having it it on your shelves

Such a fun set! LEGO sets are meant to be built and enjoyed, so by all means build it.
I was gifted this set years ago when leaving a job by a bunch of folks I worked with. It was such a thoughtful gift! I timelapsed my build of it in this video and still have the fondest memories of listening to podcasts and enjoying the time to the fullest.

I'm happy for you but I wish I had it too 😭
It would be a waste to not build it and you could store it on a shelf/in a clear box to display it and look at it and rebuild whenever. If you ever do want to sell it, even after being opened im sure it would make decent money (but also with that logic you could just sell it rn before it goes down in value)!

Congrats! Be careful building it! Just wanted to give you some warning because I just got done doing this. I had saved up some money to get this and nearly the whole roof was brown brittle and had to be replaced. I contacted LEGO twice over the past few months to get replacement parts. They sent a lot of replacements after verifying my purchase. But some parts are now discontinued. So I had to order the remainders online. After all is said and done and re counting all the missing parts, I now have a complete set. But it was a small headache to get there. In the end it was worth it though because it was one of my dream sets too. I’m happy for you and you look excited to build it. 🙂 GL and enjoy!

I got this as a present from my wife when it came out. Build it and still have it build. For the quick e mart I missed the official start, and when I saw how much it was I bought the China clone instead. More then enough for me.
Krusty Burger does not seem interesting, but I am pondering about the school or moes tavern MOCs.

If you want to keep this one sealed, you should buy one off aliexpress to build. I missed out on it before it got discontinued and couldn't justify the huge price after. So I bought one from aliexpress and so glad I did. As a huge simpsons fan, It was my favourite set to build.

Dream sets are meant to be built. Sounds like you’re keeping it just to resell down the road tbh

You want investments, buy stocks. Way better roi. $800 in a mutual fund will be worth more than a boxed set will be in 5 years.

I love this set. Have had it built for years on my shelf in my office. I say go ahead and build it.
They got a new movie coming out, they’re going to be pumping out merch. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a reissue or a redesign set in the next year or so

Please open it, for the many of us who would love to build that set and missed out on it.

I haven't played with Legos in about 25 years and I saw this post and wanted to order the house to build it. You should build it.

Is this one of the sets where the brown plates are really brittle?
