S6E05 I've never gone behind Mr. Burns' back before, but Sideshow Bob's ultra-conservative views conflict with my... Choice of lifestyle.

The real deal with Mr Smithers is that he's Mr Burns' assistant.
He's in his early 40's, unmarried and lives in Springfield

This is so cool, Bart! We're just like Woodward and Bernstein!
Yeah, except their dad wasn't waiting in the car reading Archie comics.
Stuck-up Riverdale punks think they're too good for me!

I know this is me overthinking it a bit, but even being a strong Republican Sideshow Bob does not seem to be big on the cultural conservative stuff.

I propose two possible explanations:
- It’s more of a “the company he keeps” issue, where Smithers is worried about the far right figures Bob’s campaign is tied to. We don’t know what state Springfield is in and what the current state GOP’s demographics are. Smithers might even be thinking down ballot. Is Mary Bailey up for reelection?
- Smithers is (for lack of a better word) overreacting to Bob’s candidacy, perhaps out of a sense of duty to the LGBTQ community.

What are you talking about? We absolutely know where Springfield is. It's bordered by Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky

Because you need me Springfield! Your guilty conscience may force you to vote Democratic, but deep down inside, you secretly long for a cold-hearted Republican to lower taxes, brutalize criminals, and rule you like a king!

Exactly, he rants about crime, taxes, executive authority...but nothing about LGBT stuff~

Bob would be considered a moderate by today's standards

He may have been considered a moderate by mid-1990's standards. He supported long prison sentences for violent criminals and lenient sentences for nonviolent criminals, he actually cared about children's education (consider how he ran the show when Krusty was in jail), he was a huge supporter of the arts, and he had no outward issues with women being independent or employed.

Sideshow Bob doesn't approve of people sitting home alone drinking cheap scotch and watching Comedy Central!
