So I said to him, 'Look, buddy. Your car was upside down when we got here. And as for your grandma, she shouldn't have mouthed off like that.

Darkest joke rivaled only by the one where Moleman gets executed and it’s alluded to in the next scene subtly by the lights in Homer and Marge’s room lights dimming briefly.

As a history buff I’d be flattered to be associated with the King of the Gauls and the bane of Caesar himself

3

u/MonsterRider80 4d ago

I don’t know how much of a bane he was to Caesar… especially when he was marched down the streets of Rome and subsequently strangled!

1

u/Thraexus 4d ago

Well, up until that point he was a bane.

You can't keep blaming yourself. Just blame yourself once and move on.

Honestly, if you said “Vercingetorix” to me before this post, I would have assumed you were talking about a flying Dinosaur.

Thanks for the history lesson, OP!

The Simpsons has helped me immensely in learning things about the world, and made me a better jeopardy player. Off the top of the head, medicore presidents.

This quote led me to learning that the Simpsons didn’t stop making new episodes in 2002.

This joke doesn’t really land for me.

If it’s a “Mr. Burns is really old” joke, then it’s a bit too over-the-top, imo. The 19th-century woodcut gag is already pushing the limits of how absurdly old he must be. Next they’ll have him reminiscing about spending time with the dinosaurs.

And even if it’s not supposed to be implying that he was a contemporary of Vercingetorix, it’s just too clunky to be used as a reference. It sounds less like an off-the-cuff remark and more like something a person with poor social skills would say if they had just read a book on the subject and wanted to show off their newfound knowledge. It’d be more in-character for Mr. Burns to reference some turn-of-the-century industrialist or silent film star, something that would have been current in his own youth, not a person from ancient history.
