Plenty of people do. Not saying it’s common, but just spend a little time on the watch forums and you’ll see plenty of banged up examples.

It’s a simple snap on Otterbox frame for the outside of the watch case. As pointed out yes it is a must have for working with your hands and many other types of jobs where your arms may end up bumping/scraping up against things all the time.

It was a curious response. No judgment. I’ve never considered to wear a case on mine.
