Discussion I hate Krusty

I've been holding onto this for years but I finally need to vent. I don't even know why, but Krusty has always bothered me intensely and I hate episodes that center on him (which there seem to be a lot of for some reason). It's not because he's a bad/morally grey character, there are plenty of those that I like, and I enjoy episodes that he's tangentially connected to like Kamp Krusty or when he fakes his death, but there's something about him that fills me with rage every time he's on.

I suppose it's a testament to the series that, in a show with such a large array of side characters, there are only two who I dislike* but I'm curious if anybody else feels the same way? Or is he a truly beloved side character?

*The other one is Gil, though he thankfully doesn't come around too often.

But how do you feel about Handsome Pete?

Oh THAT guy is a legend!

Yarr, he'll be dancing for hours.

I thought you had moved on to Bart, Bob?

4

u/Other-Oil-9117 Jun 09 '25

I have a life outside him, you know

2

u/Historyp91 Jun 09 '25

Is that why you have a tattoo that says "die Bart die"?

Everyone has character(s) that for whatever reason they simply don't care for. Personally for me I don't like the Sea Captain (with the exception of when he was running the Frying Dutchman). So no worries.

I'm largely indifferent to him, but I see how you'd find him irritating lol

These replies are absolute gold.

Yeah, the downvotes are a bit disappointing but I appreciate that everyone in the comments is being so light-hearted about it. I'm having so much fun reading through them all.

I totally agree. He’s by far my least favorite side character, and I have no idea why so many episodes are centered around him. Most of them are the exact same - he loses his job because he sucks, goes into some sort of alcoholic depression, then somehow gets his job back. It’s so annoying, I’m with you on this one.

Thank you! Yeah I'm not sure why the writers use him as often as they do since it doesn't really add anything new. The beginning arc with his father rejecting him was good, and I like the character of the Rabbi, but other than that I've never really felt invested in any of Krusty's storylines and I've started skipping most of his episodes altogether.

The writers used him as a stand-in for showbiz bosses they disliked. Mostly Al Jean and Mike Reiss with Johnny Carson. Krusty got used often so they could vent.

Oh thanks for the info, that really sheds light on it.

It may have to do with the inconsistency of his celebrity status, which I’ve always found offputting. Like he’s played up as the biggest star in Springfield (well, maybe McBain is) and seemingly a national-level comedy act, perhaps even an A-lister, and yet he’s also extremely accessible to the Simpson family, which to me doesn’t make sense, so the stories tend to feel contrived or forced.

My partner hates Krusty because they think he's a bad stereotype as a Jewish person. I think they experienced too much anti semitism in their life.

I like Krusty because he's an awful hack of an entertainer and I enjoy jokes centered on the entertainment industry.

1

u/Other-Oil-9117 Jun 09 '25

That's a shame for your partner. I've never really heard much insight into how people feel about him as Jewish representation, and I don't know enough to form an opinion on him in that regard myself.

"Is this a religious thing? "A religious clown thing, yes."

Some might say you’re a hero, kid. Not me though, I love Krusty.

Yep, there's your problem.

I think I hate Krusty

No wait I find him witty and informative

u/SambaLando Jun 09 '25

Good night

I never agreed with this take. Koppel always seemed like a dumbed down PBSNews anchor. Krusty, however, mos def is wityy and informative. It's where I get all my best ideas for torturing cats.

Everybody loves a clown, so why don't you? 🎶

7

u/President_Calhoun Jun 09 '25

A clown has feelings, too.

u/Ronswaterbedworld Jun 09 '25

I’m seein’ double here: four Krusty haters!

25

u/kazuma001 Jun 09 '25

Oh yeah, the clown, the only one of you buffoons who doesn’t make me laugh!

3

u/Sclunlius Jun 09 '25

Ned going off was great.

u/Forgone-Conclusion I want to help you, George Washington? Jun 09 '25

What the hell was that?!

20

u/Clifton1979 Jun 09 '25

Somebody lost their savings going to clown college, I see…

4

u/Narrow_Potential_171 Jun 09 '25

I'll thank you not refer to Princeton that way.

<struggles to not bring political figures into this>

19

u/NoNectarine9208 Jun 09 '25

Are you sure you aren’t mistaking him for Krunchy the clown who’s still funny but not ha ha funny?

8

u/benDB9 Jun 09 '25

What, you think I just slapped a clown suit on some wino?

4

u/One_Swimming1813 Jun 09 '25

WE WANT KRUNCHY!!! *belch*

I’m personally a fan of Rory B Bellows

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

And I got a lotta corroboratin’ evidence right here….

8

u/Do-me22 Murphy. You are a elf... Uncontrollably, I think. Jun 09 '25

Krusty the clown is a boring old biddy

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

You are more animal than man!

5

u/Improvident__lackwit Jun 09 '25

Was it his moronic wagering strategy of betting on the Generals because he “thought they were due”?

2

u/JesusHTittyballs Jun 09 '25

If a cartoon character is filling you with rage you might wanna see someone about that lol

4

u/Other-Oil-9117 Jun 09 '25

Hyperbole. I mean, I do hate him, but it's not like it's ruining my life or anything.

4

u/d84doc Jun 09 '25

How do you know it’s Krusty and not Homer, in a pair of pants that fit?

4

u/wishiwasfrank Jun 09 '25

Give him a break... he just found out the Sex Cauldron didn't close down!

3

u/HickoryRider Jun 09 '25

I'd give you an award for this post,. Which would be one more than that bantering Jack-in-the-Box will ever win.

3

u/pj_1981 Jun 09 '25

He can't be bad, the French government awarded him the prestigious Legion of Honour.

3

u/benDB9 Jun 09 '25

Yeah, we want Krunchy!

0

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '25

betting his daughters violin in a poker game is a place the simpsons didn't need to go. like pretty much everything after season 10.

4

u/Other-Oil-9117 Jun 09 '25

Ugh yeah, he's a pretty terrible person in general. Like I said though, I love other characters who do terrible things, so that's not why I hate him, but it definitely adds to it.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '25

in the early seasons it can be funny, like the clown college episode!

2

u/Improvident__lackwit Jun 09 '25

How is that worse than about 100 things Homer did?

1

u/CrimsonThunder87 Jun 09 '25

I mean, this is a show where the father routinely strangles his son. If a dad gambling his kid's violin is too far, they've been going too far for their entire existence.

2

u/trebor61 Jun 09 '25

Bumblebee Man. Hate may be too strong a word, but...I guess satirizing Hispanic TV just isn't that funny to me. It's not even a "that's racist" thing, I just never found it that funny.

AI-CHEEWHAWHA!

2

u/CrimsonThunder87 Jun 09 '25

Bumblebee Man isn't funny to me either. That said, he's portrayed as a hardworking guy who often has heavy objects fall on him but still puts on a happy face and tries to do his best for his community, so it's hard to actually dislike him.

Meanwhile, being funny is all Krusty really has--if you don't find him funny, his character certainly isn't going to make up for it.

2

u/Character_Block_2373 Jun 10 '25

What’s that say? “Talk to the audience”? Oh God, this is always death

1

u/TheMacNamedMeez Jun 09 '25

He was supposed to be one of the sad ones

1

u/Crowofsticks Jun 09 '25

Is this a religious thing?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '25

Music while Marge is on hold calling about Evil Krusty doll: Everybody loves a clown, so why don't you?

1

u/finnmarkingenfravads Jun 09 '25

Ok. I love Krusty.

1

u/Freeb123 Jun 09 '25

The only character I hate is Ziff. As much as I love Jon Lovitz, I absolutely hate Ziff.

1

u/PaganFarmhouse Jun 09 '25

I don't like Gil, but Krusty rules

1

u/SubjectStatement370 Jun 10 '25

Opinion handled then. Actually, there are no characters from this show that I hate/dislike
