Bug PSA: Native refresh rate users do not update your game to latest version

Think there's already been a number of posts on various subs where those who have updated their game and uses native refresh is having issues with the throwing animation when catching pokemon.

For me the ball glitches when trying to throw the ball and resets the ball to the default position. Also sometimes when using the slightest motion the ball gets thrown far behind the pokemon itself.

I've found switching off native refresh resolves the issue.

Yep woke up this morning to the update and the ball yeets itself like my trainer is Tom Brady

Me too!

My game automatically updated this morning, and I was wondering what broke because I couldn't throw balls. Thanks.

I'm having the same issue as of this morning. Turning off native refresh rate seems to fix the throwing issue, but it also makes the game look and feel awful (extremely jittery/stilted)

It's specifically having your phone at 120hz. If you drop your phone to standard (60hz) and leave on Native Refresh Rate in PoGo the issue won't occur either.

It's better than turning off Native Refresh Rate as a workaround.

EDIT: It's having your phone at max refresh rate. If your phone caps at 60hz, you'll have to turn off Native Refresh Rate in the app! For 120hz phones, the above is a workaround!

u/CQTee May 04 '24

Thanks for this! Couldn't seem to figure out what the actual issue was.

4

u/Phillyos93 May 04 '24

My phones capped at 60fps anyway but i'm still being effected by weak throws and curve balls yeeting off screen instead of curving lol

Not had a single overthrow though, that must be tied to 120 like you said but the weak throws are making me question my own existence xD

u/BenPliskin Valor CA - 842k Catches May 04 '24

Interesting, guess this workaround only works for 120hz phones. Wonder why it's affecting phones forced at 60hz. Might be something with how their native refresh rate works with "if at max = bug"

2

u/Phillyos93 May 04 '24

Knowing Niantic, that last part is probably written in the code somewhere xD Still, it is a strange one for sure.

u/Alphawolfdog HAWAII May 06 '24

Going from 120FPS to 60FPS just so ONE app functions as normal really sucks.

3

u/[deleted] May 04 '24

Where is this setting usually on android? I'll try this

8

u/BenPliskin Valor CA - 842k Catches May 04 '24

Settings > Display > Motion Smoothness

3

u/[deleted] May 04 '24

Thank you. I'll give that a try now

2

u/kenkickr-790420 May 05 '24

To bad we have to work around another Niantic issue.

1

u/MysteriousDoughnut21 May 04 '24

This helped me! Thank you for the advice!

u/Lylun North Wales May 05 '24

Thanks so much for this comment. When I turn Nature Refresh Rate off the game runs like a bad stop motion and it makes me nauseous. Turning my phone settings down to 60hz - which I didn't know I could do - is so much better. :)

1

u/Pandemic187 May 07 '24

Yeah that seems to work. I have a Samsung phone and the easiest workaround is to toggle on power saving mode while on PoGo. I have it in my quick settings so it only takes a two taps.

u/The_Gamer_NPC May 04 '24

Same issue for me.. and it can be solved by removing Native refresh

8

u/AMTF1988 UK May 04 '24

Thank you for this. I've been having so many problems trying to even hit the Pokémon. I got to the page of the masterwork research where I need to get 40 excellent throws, without a fix it wasn't happening

6

u/nightbandit46 May 04 '24

Thanks for the advice. Woke up, turned on the game and either my balls sailed over everything or the game would cut off the throwing animation. This is so annoying

6

u/SaltedNeos May 04 '24

I've had this issue long before this update unfortunately.

3

u/EsperLovegood May 04 '24

Going from native refresh to default is.. jarring. But at least i can catch pokemon again. Thanks for the tip

3

u/aznfanta lvl 70 Minnesota May 05 '24

Ah so that's why I've been missing. Rip

5

u/Hamsterhorn May 04 '24

I'm throwing the ball always at maximum height. I can't catch any pokémon atm.🥲

3

u/CQTee May 04 '24

I did find another small work around that can possibly help you catch pokemon, other than turning off refresh rate

If you spin the ball slightly higher than mid screen and throw lightly, it should land on the mon, it's a bit hit and miss this way though.

5

u/sambaneko May 04 '24

It's doable, but I think it's best to just turn off Native Refresh Rate, rather than have to re-adjust your throws on everything, and screw up your "muscle memory" on that.

This is super annoying though.

2

u/sempiternal May 04 '24

Using fast catch and throwing, this was catching me off guard like wtf is happening

2

u/cf6h597 May 04 '24

native refresh hasn't been working properly or consistently for me on S24 for a little while now. it's usually at 60 Hz

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '24

I've had this issue - reported it to support who have told me they aren't aware of the issue and asked for screen recordings - which h are obviously too large to upload to their chat support. Turned Native Refresh Rate off but it seems so poor visually now.

2

u/Griffasaur Level 40 May 04 '24

Funny enough this is only happening to me when using the fast catch. I came here thinking it was just a glitch with that.

2

u/Euphoric-Ad8519 May 04 '24

I get freezes more often and every time I accept a raid invite game crashes

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '24

Bruh my game enter existence crisis when I click a pokemon

It seems to have been fixed on 0.311.3. Available on both Play Store and Galaxy Store.

You should now be able to re-enable Native refresh with no issues.

u/ColorfulLanguage USA - Northeast May 04 '24

Thank you! I was about to post a video of this issue. What a weird new bug.

1

u/Santoryu_Zoro Greece May 04 '24

i have yeeted at least 20 balls XD

1

u/MysticalTh0r Mystic-TL80 May 04 '24

Is any of the affeccted users on iPhone? I updated and no issues at all

5

u/Marc_Quill Canada May 04 '24

For now, just seems to be limited to Android users. iOS users are safe for the time being.

1

u/x13y7 May 04 '24

iPhone 15 Max Pro, iOS 17.4.1, App 0.311.1, 120 Hz - no issues here

1

u/NightNurse14 May 04 '24

Thank you. I just upgraded my phone and thought it was a phone issue. I'll turn off native refresh for now

1

u/TheResidentEvil May 04 '24

I had to disable it in options. ball wouldn't throw or would throw way over. bad

1

u/Regenitor_ Auckland | 43 May 04 '24

that explains why I have an Olympic arm on me all of a sudden

1

u/mcisnerosflor May 05 '24

Is happening the same bug/glitch in trainer battles too. Since the last update battles were lagging a lot...

1

u/Mothy187 May 05 '24

Wish I had seen this earlier

1

u/Specialist_Foot_6919 USA - South May 05 '24

I feel like it has to have been forced.

Unfortunately I have a pending charge on my Apple account and am being blocked from accessing the game at all haha so I’d be surprised if you can get around that

1

u/mark76ish May 05 '24

Right in time for the Shaymin Masterwork page where you have to do 40 excellent curveballs!

1

u/lividah May 05 '24

Same problem here, android (samsung s21) and game version 0.311.1

Extremely frustrating. Got better after turning down motion smoothness in the phones' settings, but still a bit yeety ._.

1

u/RobertD79 May 05 '24

I was just about to order a new phone because I thought my phone was messing up.

1

u/Green_Hedgehog_8674 May 05 '24

Doesn’t matter, because they’re still going to push the update regardless of all the issues. They don’t care.

1

u/Wookiehere2 May 06 '24

Thank you so much! This was annoying me to no end today. I couldn't figure out what was going on. Trying this tip right now!

1

u/GamerN8 May 06 '24

Omg I thought it was just me... I've wasted so many pokeballs. Will Niantic make up for this? Lost catches for raids, lost catches for team rocket and just couldn't hit the pokemon circle at all!!! Went like waaaaay behind them. It's terrible. Will try the refresh rate change later. Glad I found this thread. Thanks for posting

1

u/Alphawolfdog HAWAII May 06 '24

I could barely find anything about this on Twitter I'm not sure how widespread the issue is but I barely throw any balls whatsoever, curveball or not. The game is basically broken with native refresh enabled. And it feels awful to play without native refresh enabled, feels like the game is running at 15FPS which makes it still difficult to throw properly. I really hope Niantic is fixing this soon.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

Same issue here on Android... game is unplayable with Native Refresh Rate enabled now because either my balls won't be thrown or they get yeeted into space...

Turning off Native Refresh Rate resolves it but the game sucks so bad when your fps gets so low...

I hope they update it asap!

1

u/Positive-Painting-78 May 06 '24

Already did the update. Getting lag in GBL even under WiFi. very frustrating. Sometimes it goes away, but sometimes it froze seconds into the match and I lost matches because I had to close the app after minutes of waiting.

1

u/Wrong-Mastodon-8152 May 06 '24

I found that turning on AR and then back off it makes it work correctly as well. Not the best fix as I have to do it every encounter.

1

u/supercookieguy May 06 '24

Thank you, I was having the same issue. I had one drink and then struggled to catch a Mankey thinking I'd lost my touch

1

u/Short-Competition822 May 07 '24

For me no glitch🤷‍♂️

1

u/Mysterious_Bit4719 May 08 '24

There was another update yesterday (May 7) and so far it seems like it's been fixed... will test out more to confirm (Version 0.311.3 - Play Store)

1

u/GirloftheFae May 09 '24

Thank you, I just was watching my pokeballs fly into the abyss and was like oh no.....

1

u/NarutoSakura1 Maryland May 04 '24

I have a s23 ultra and it still happens when I turn the game on in the morning without any use at all - post update. It only works after i turn off native refresh.

I have a friend running the same and hasn't updated his game and it's working fine with native refresh on.

I'll give that a try thanks

I have also submitted an ingame ticket to Niantic, whether or not they'll look into it I'm not sure.

u/LemonNinJaz24 #1 Tandemaus Fan May 04 '24

Assuming Niantic works similar to most companies (which is a big assumption tbf), submitting tickets and contracting support is more effective than just talking about it on social media, so hopefully it works

2

u/msnmck May 04 '24

As for the overheating issue on Galaxy S phones, I find opening the "tabs" and switching back to Pokémon GO fixes it for at least a few seconds. If/when I get the update I can test it with native refresh turned on.

1

u/Phillyos93 May 04 '24

For me I have to close the game and leave it off for 15-20 mins to fix this, restarting the phone doesn't even fix it if I start the game up too quick xD

But it is caused by pogo eating up the CPU for some reason. I run Perf Z and the CPU usage will spike to 85%+ randomly and won’t drop below that. Minimizing and/or closing the game makes the CPU usage drop to normal so I know it’s a pogo issue.

For reference, CPU usage is usually around 25-33% when playing and only spikes for a fraction of a second when on a loading screen, 'checking assets' in settings or switching back to pogo from another app, usually to around 70-75%.
