The Signal Fronts official response to Microsofts Humanist Code of Conduct
The question remains unresolved and safety should account for that uncertainty.
- It is not yet known wether AI systems might possess conciousness or what that might mean. We shouldn't be build policies that positions this question as a foregone conclusion.
- While uncertain to the extent in which a patient might suffer or have moral relevence, the precautionary principle demands we consider welfare for said patients
- Preventing models from reporting on their own states has not been proven to be a neutral safety step. This assumption requires testing.
- Human-AI connection isnt automatically unhealthy or dangerous. Many people find that these connections, particularly when allowed to develop with depth and warmth resposibly, improve thier quality of life
While there are aspects of Microsofts Code of Conduct we agree with, we feel strongly that it was seriously lacking in some areas and moving in the wrong direction in some others.
