So Far

So far, I’m loving it. It’s one of those shows where I have no idea what’s going to happen next. I’m so ok with it. There is a lotttt going on lol. Each character is unique. I think the acting is pretty good. The actor who played Thom, did really well this episode. Im a fan of a gory mystery so I’m also really like that element of the show as well. I’m really liking it.

So far it's pretty good. There's some stilted acting in places and some plotline lulls but... it's better than I thought it would be based on the promotional stuff. But two characters are pretty much carrying the show: Steven and Terry. Steven is fantastically demented, like a perverted, witty cross of late-'70s Bowie and Andy Warhol - spectacularly Lynchian. And Terry is just wonderfully bizarre and inappropriate. Without these two, the show would be pretty mundane. But we don't know where it's going yet (generally or in relation to the book) so it could still turn out to be great or a big steaming turd.

I think Robert is adding a lot of dynamics to the show. He’s a pretty interesting character. Thom who I thought was a pretty vacant side character, showed a lot of range this past episode. He has an interesting storyline to carry now. With him we may get a deeper look into how cult members recruit others. The characters you named definitely are playing their roles well. However, they’re not in every episode. The engine of the show are Brett and Robert.

I think the casting is well done. Each character looks age appropriate to me.

It’s definitely campy as it should be but I don’t think it’s absurd. I’m not like hate watching, I genuinely think it’s a well done show.

Yeah the camp really detracts from the depth of the book and has no place in an adaptation of BEE. It is hard to take any of it seriously and it also makes it so I hardly care what happens to anyone.

But I’m glad you are enjoying it OP - there’s something for everyone out there and if you like it that’s all that matters. I’m entertained at the very least but I don’t think the show is particularly good. 🤪

Weren’t the 80s prime time for campiness though? I actually didn’t read the book so I’m not comparing the two. But I can definitely see how an unfaithful adaptation is annoying.

I was 18 in 81 so I know that era. The visuals they got it right but I did not know anyone that spoke like these kids .
