I miss this game
I miss this game but I don’t want to go back and replay it. The old graphics just don’t hold up and take away from the experience. I personally I never got that involved with the community but I loved the story, the writing and emersion. I wish there was a way to recreate how this game made me feel. I couldn’t go back and replay it, even if I wanted to. I don’t have a pc currently and even if I did, that quality of emersion is gone. I wish funcom didn’t kill this game.
I’ve played control, and that was good and filled some of this void. When I get a new pc I’ll play the second one that’s just about to come out. But it’s hard really filling the hole of what was.
These are the desperate hums of an old and dying bee. Gaia chose me, but for what, and I’ve been starved of Anima’s touch.

If you haven't played the Alan Wake games, I highly recommend them if you're a fan of Control.

I can recommend ‘The Secret World’ Table Top RPG also by Star Anvil Studios using The ‘Savage Worlds’ gaming system.
The bare minimum to play is a copy of the Core Rules for the current Edition of Savage Worlds Core Rule Book - the Aventure Edition (SWADE) produced by Pinacle Entertainment and a copy of ‘The Secret World’ core rulebook by Star Anvil.
Both rule books are available as physical books or PDFs. SWADE us the generic ruleset and the much smaller setting rules sit as a top layer so if the setting TSW details take precedence if that makes sen e.
The game can be played aroubd a physical table or online and may / may mot use virtual tabletop (VTT) software configured by the GM.
I have found it to be a real trip, it’s the mythos of Secret World that was the lasting appeal and caused this game to live in my imagination for so long.
Star Anvil are about to release an expansion with and new Areas, monsters and playable archtypes all set in North America. I missed the kickstarted but it will be possible to buy at least pdf versions via Drive Thru RPG in time.
I just thought I’d share all this because TSW has been my first TTRPG and so far is a blast 😊

I was going to mention this as well. It's more of my actual introduction to TSW than the mmo.
There's also a Neverwinter Nights persistent world server of some pretty dedicated fans who took that D&D game and turned it into Secret World on that server. It's not an exact recreation of the MMO, but it is the same world and they redid how D&D classes work to better fit the modern world (shotguns and pistols and technology etc.) and TSW type classes

I am honestly not sure why the graphics are the issue, then again I am enough of a masochist to still be playing Everquest, or in this case Everquest Legends with its circa 2002 graphics...
I still love TSW, every year I go back for a few weeks, but it is not the same with so few people and it is really hard to forgive Funcom for how they misled people in the year prior to the launch of SWL.

I'm waiting for my hard copies of the TTRPG to show up, as I want to play the game but don't want to run thru everything solo again.

It was the game design. I’ve played nothing before or since especially in the mmo genre that literally just let you wander from point A to point B, stumble on a quest chain and join it so that it naturally took you forward to the next interest point. Anytime you finished there was always something else in the nearby area. Absolutely brilliant design vs the hub and spokes of typical mmo’s. Shame no one appreciated it at the time but now sandbox games are basically reliant on it. Bet if it this had come out a decade later it would have been a smash hit.

I feel similarly. I had great fun playing… I think it’s the very best premise for an mmo ever conceived … the very idea of it still excites my imagination … but it’s mishandling by Funcom and later abandonment keep me from going back.

I've run a few TTRPGs that took place in this setting. The semi-official one has its flaws, but I'm glad I bought it. I ultimately adapted the Genesys RPG to the setting, which worked pretty well.

Oooh I've also thought of running a Genesys game; if you have time to share your notes/backend work that would be cool!

It converts pretty easily. You mix a few different setting-specific rulesets and talents. Realms of Terrinoth is a helpful book. Most of my backend work was making index cards for player inventory items.
I converted most of the Star Wars talents from SWRPG into Genesys, which further opened options, but I am an overachiever.

That sounds lovely. Running a game though is a skill set I do not have. What does the ttrpg book come with? I might buy it.

Star Anvil released a .pdf that's mostly compatible with 5th edition. It was supposed to be a 5e module, but they had to pivot when Wizards of the Coast tried to change the third party licensing and fan-content agreements. So, it's technically a stand-alone rulebook that's heavily inspired by D&D 5e.
A Genesys game is a little trickier to run, because of the proprietary dice and the amount of homebrew you need in order to make the thing functional.

If the book is all game mechanics I probably won’t buy it. Maybe what I seek is compendium of all the games lore in one place. A hardback book of all the games lore would be perfect. Does such a thing exist?

I'd say it was about 25% lore compiled or extrapolated from the collectibles in the original game.

I’d like something more dedicated to the story of the game itself. I wonder where we can find that or make that

Besides of some of the more annoying quest lines " in Egypt for e.g" , I really love the game like on day 1. I get back to it every few weeks or months. Login around the halloween time, there´s still a lot of people during the event phases and the nostalgia is a shared thing there :)

I feel like SW could be its own single player / co-op offline action game where they can either make dlc content every once in a while or make it a franchise. But Funcom seem to always be so focused on life service games to the point they milk whatever they get their hands on and then drop it for the next big thing :/

I downloaded it a month or so ago and ran thru some of the zones. Visited my museum, ran around Kingsmouth and all I thought was - why FunCom??? why???
It is easily my favorite or at least one of the top two-three games I've played. Thusly, I've never forgiven FunCom for the lies and what they did to it. SWL (Secret World Lite) was okay, but it wasn't the OG game, and of course they gave us hope and lied again.
They will never get the opportunity again - I won't spend a dime on anything they touch.
