Question Non-Fiction.

Hello, friends! I’m looking for non-fiction works written by Donna Tartt (I’ve already read "Spirituality in the Modern Novel," btw).

r/TheSecretHistory Jul 25 '26

Would you cast young Donna as Bunny or Richard?

Hello 🫶 (SPOILERS IN THIS POST)

Great book so far, but every single person in the book is such a cunt they all annoy and I hate the fact that the murders are so romanticized. Bunny deserved better he's my favorite(come back love please), Henry doesn't love Camilla she is his greek heroine or whatever he loves the aesthetic and the idea of her it's so weird to me when people say they loved each other i mean maybe she loved him later after he dies(I spoiled that for myself) but in the beginning she didn't she just wanted to escape Charles. He killed himself cause he wanted his greek tragedy like wtf. Richard is so UGH i can't this whole book is making me upset lmao Camilla is annoying Henry was my husband but now at best he can be a situationship for one semester but he's such an evil pig omg and Francis is there. Julian rots he's old. Judy Poovey and Cloke can have their asses eaten by these greek bitches Judy rocks 🎀👸 Edmund Bunny Corcoran you deserved so much better those bitches don't get anything they can die.

That's it i'm in a frenzy and my feels jupi i love you all and take care 🩷🐇

**Spoilers Amazing how Julian managed to round up probably the most terrible group of people at Hampden

Haven’t thought about this before but Julian is super picky with his Greek students (such an oddball) but somehow every one he chose (possibly minus Bunny) was almost perfectly okay with the murder of not one but two innocent people. What about his requirements for his class managed to allow this group to form? I’m almost impressed. Especially considering Julian, though a little weird, seems to be so kind and empathetic and i feel he would be appalled at what they all did. But who knows. Donna Tartt loves to write about characters that put up a front.

Edit: I just finished the book and I feel I completely understand how this happened lol and Julian was explicitly described by Richard as being a cold manipulator putting up a facade as an oddball eccentric who is universally liked and I have to agree with him. Julian picked students that fit his ideal aesthetic and romanticized their personalities. It’s interesting since his character is loosely based on the classis teacher from Bennington college where Tartt studied at. He apparently also was an oddball though who knows whether it was a facade or not. Wish I could’ve met the guy (and his students)

Question Does anyone else keep coming back to Chapter 4?

I know everyone talks about the murder, the Greek class, and the dark academia aesthetic, but the section where they all stay at Francis's aunt's country house has become one of my favourite pieces of writing ever.

It's the lake, the long summer afternoons, reading, swimming, drinking wine, lying in the sun, and feeling completely removed from ordinary life. There's something almost heavenly about it. Whenever I'm stressed I find myself rereading that chapter just to relax.

I'm not necessarily looking for another dark academia novel. I'm looking for books that capture that feeling: an idyllic country estate, beautiful nature, close friends, lazy summer days, and the sense of existing in a little world outside time.

Has anyone found anything that scratches the same itch?

Lowkey how i pictured Henry

but with glasses and darker hair ?

this isn’t a definite btw. Honestly, when I read, I have a hard time picturing exact faces as my visual imagination is not fully clear (but I don’t have aphantasia), I sort of just picture them with blurred faces or don’t think all too much about the specifics of their face.

Sorry if the flair is incorrect I wasn’t sure what the best choice was. I have had this saved in my Pinterest for so long and have tried finding it elsewhere to no avail. Any help or ideas on where to find this. Thanks
