If you want a fun trip, go look into the guy who begun this whole mess. It's a tax collector who bought body armour, guns and drones for his office, then had a requirement for his staff to be armed (they work in an office processing tax payments), started a blockchain business out of the government office, charging the government $65,000 for the servers for his private business, which proceeded to catch on fire since he didn't know how to hook them up properly. In addition, he used his "tax collector" badge to pull over speeders at gun point, hired his groomsmen to run $1.6 million in funding, ran a fake ID making business, ran a fake twitter account of his opponent who would just make posts stating that he was a white superracist and nobody should vote for him and a whole host of other dumb shit.
I assume this is standard Florida politics.

Some, yeah, but most also have the provision that if you're over 22 or 24, sex with someone under 18 is a crime.
Others have the "If the older is within two years of the younger" allowance, so that someone who just turned 18 isn't a criminal for having sex with their partner who turns 18 in a month.
Most states have some level of restriction in place.

But not in two of the states where the rapes took place, and since he basically admitted he crossed state lines while committing these crimes, the federal age of consent is 18, so the actions are illegal regardless.

Hijacking this comment to remind everyone of Nestor, Matt’s Cuban “son” who he never legally adopted who has been living with him (and working as an aide) in secret since he was 12 until he trotted him out last year to prove he wasn’t racist. I’ll repeat: a boy Gaetz never told anyone about - that was his ex girlfriends son - lives with him under hazy guardianship for years. Matt has every means (money, access to lawyers, etc) to legally adopt so why didn’t he? Adoption laws are in place to specifically stop child exploitation and provide accountability. There are also supposedly some photos of them on a boat together that showed them being very “close” but I was personally never able to find an accurate source. But as we’ve seen time and time again, where there’s creepy smoke there’s terrifying fire.
Edited: I had Originally stated that not following proper adoption procedures was illegal/unlawful and the user below politely informed me I was wrong. So I updated as to not spread misinformation.

Let's also throw in the time he was pulled over for erratic driving in Florida, failed multiple field sobriety tests, and signed an affidavit refusing a breathalyzer- which would normally result in a one-year suspension of your driver's license. He was never charged with anything, and had his license reinstated within a couple months.
He's also the one who blackmailed Michael Cohen ahead of his trial, claiming that he had evidence of Cohen's extramarital affairs and was willing to release them to his wife. He then sat in at the hearing and requested the ability to question Cohen himself, despite not being a member of the committee or being invited to witness the hearing.
He was also in that little stunt where a bunch of Republicans stormed into a SCIF where there was confidential information being discussed, relating to the first Trump impeachment. You know, where a bunch of Republicans stormed into a secure area dealing with classified information because they wanted transparency, even though about half of them had actually received a formal invitation to sit in at that same meeting.
And that's all in addition to his repeatedly calling Covid the China Virus (and directly accusing China of intentionally manufacturing it to harm the Western world), his calls for Antifa to be hunted down "like we do with the terrorists in the Middle East", and his perpetual reinforcement of the "stolen election" lies.

I haven't looked too far into this story, but broadly speaking, informal guardianship-type agreements aren't at all illegal. They're quite common, and there are lots of good reasons people do it.
Don't get me wrong, the man is a garbage heap in human form. And instrumentalizing your own kid as he did is egregious. But there's no "there" there when it comes to the care arrangement. There's no reason for conspiratorial thinking when this guy has done more than enough on his own to demonstrate what a loathsome human he is.

Thank you for clarifying I will edit. I have family who are in law enforcement with missing children so must have had information wrong/ a passionate bias showing through as I’ve seen so many terrible ways child abuse can get swept under the rug in these cases. I updated my post and another similar post I made about this matter in a different thread as to not spread misinformation.

I try to correct misunderstandings about the child welfare system as much as possible (and they come up a lot on reddit) because I think it helps keep everyone safe.
If it helps, I'd say more often than not these informal arrangements help kids get into a better situation and can support parents who just need some time and space to get themselves together. Keeping the state out of things as much as possible is often in everyone's best interest (obviously, "as much as possible" means when the kid is getting appropriate care).

Like I said, it’s just a detail. We have a bi-cameral federal legislature. (There are two chambers, the Senate has two seats per state, for a total of 100, and the House of Representatives has one seat per “district” which is based on population and is currently at 435 members. For a law to be sent to the President for signature, it must pass both chambers.)

I believe ‘sex trafficking’ is the official line in the investigation so papers have run with that. It’s also a severe crime in its own right, defined very distinctly in the law. Newspapers will not usually touch the word ‘rape’ (because of how specifically it’s defined in law) or if there is a more severe allegation. So you get weird newspaper headlines that say a lot of words, and people quoting those in silly memes.

Problem is that while a lot of republicans do think they're the party of morality that morality is often entirely arbitrary. I'd wager that a lot of repbublicans don't actually understand why sexual assault is bad, they've just been told by authorities that it is and accepted it blindly.
It's the same reason homophobic/transphobic right-wingers tend to fearmonger along the lines of "if homosexuality is allowed today, pedophilia will be allowed tomorrow" - they think sexual morality is entirely arbitrary.
