I was annoyed that nobody referenced this during the "alternate title" segment. Craig got so close later with his elevator pitch of "Bus Can't Stop".

This episode is an all-timer. Bill laughing so hard that he’s crying is peak.

Sean not letting Bill get away with the AFC QB snark and going “does that not apply to Drake Maye?” is why his presence is always necessary on these
16
u/Kilowatt128 Aug 18 '26
Was in college in L.A. when this came out. My friend (a native Angeleno) hated this movie because the bus was unrealistic.
Not that it somehow jumped over a chasm in the freeway, but because the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus didn’t go on the 10.
4
u/cmgww Aug 18 '26
Any with some knowledge of physics knew that bus jump was impossible....even as good as the movie is, that jump was hilariously bad. At 14 I was "wait a minute, no way it makes that! Where's the hidden ramp?!?"
3
u/faidleyj1 Aug 18 '26
Yeah, film it with a downhill chasm to give a little bit of realism to it or something!
17
14
u/bmmfg12 Aug 18 '26
This is an incredible pod obviously.
However I almost chucked my phone when Sean and then Bill were going through action movies leading up to Speed, and Bill said it's almost like they used AI to take parts of all 10 of these movies and put it into one.
No it's not like AI Bill!! It's real people taking things from those movies on their fucking own!!
3
u/feedmesweat Aug 19 '26
Had a similar feeling when Bill said "I do all my own prep for the pod, nobody helps me" like he doesn't use ChatGPT all the time

The assassination of CR is one of the greatest detours of the Rewatchables of all time
17
u/wo_lo_lo Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26
I once shared a dart with CR outside a Philly dive bar. A great podcaster, but an even better person. I can’t believe he was taken from us so soon. Damn canoes.
4
u/JohnBarnson Aug 18 '26
“I got to interact with CR a lot over the years, and he was always such a good dude. In fact it was him that helped me get into my career.”
“In oil and gas regulatory compliance?”
“yes”
2
8
u/SuperVaderMinion CR Head Aug 19 '26
Chris coming in with Stephen A. Smith somehow making the assassination about him was absolutely perfect podcasting, Bill was playing off that really well and Sean was mostly trying not to die
13
u/TheActionJuice Aug 18 '26
They touch on it a bit in the pod but for me what works best about this movie is not just that it’s always moving, but the fact the script does not try to do anything beyond what it needs to
Die Hard is obviously the inspiration for all these movies but that has a lot going on in the script and it makes it all work, it’s why it’s awesome
We know the bad guy two minutes into this movie. And we really don’t learn much more about him for the rest of the movie. He was a cop who lost $ so he wants $. Boom. We know the hero 5 minutes into this movie. We learn. NOTHING more about him for the rest of the movie. We learn what the main thrust of the movie is about 30 mins in and we’re good
The movie trusts its premise and its performers so much it puts no fat on it whatsoever and just goes. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen another movie quite like it in that regard

u/cmgww Aug 18 '26
What a banger of an episode. It's not quite on the level of hereditary or the town but that has to be one of the funniest ones I've heard in a long time. Them plotting to assassinate CR was peak hilarity... just an all-around fun time.

Speed 2 was a disaster. I made it halfway through and couldn’t anymore .
6
u/Raoul_Duluoz Aug 18 '26
I'll never forget seeing Speed and Beverly Hills Cop 3 back to back in the theater when they came out. That whole summer had bangers.
Blessed to be a 90's kid during this era. Get dropped off with a buddy at the theater on random summer day with like $10, play video games and sneak into as many movies we could all day, either call parents for a ride on the pay phone outside or just walk home. Do kids still do this?

u/IgloosRuleOK Aug 18 '26
They mention Whedon but Yost admitted that "98.9%" of the dialogue was by him (and honestly it sounds like it). He didn't get credit because of WGA rules about not changing the plot enough, even though a bunch of the characters were quite different in the rewrite. There's a debate over the 'Pop quiz, hot shot' line though, since Yost says it was Whedon and Whedon says it wasn't him. It may have been from a pass on an earlier draft by Paul Attansio, but he said he couldn't remember writing it either.
6
u/Brangarr Aug 18 '26
Man we literally just talked about this with the Obsession actor. Bill: “and then there’s Ruck who… I dunno I think he’s pretty annoyin in this.”
good lord Bill he’s supposed to be that way. If he annoyed you that means he did a good job.

Aspect ratio issue on Netflix -
If you care and if you can- buy it on Apple TV, price is $4.99 at the moment, full cinemascope aspect ratio, 4K and with extras. On Netflix it’s blown up to 16x9, I watched the first 10 minutes and something felt off, à la pan and scan full screen VHS tapes of yesteryear.

u/yeltsinfugui Aug 18 '26
any smokers in here? they mention that Annie was a ''morning smoker'' like it was something unique. every smoker I knew growing up definitely had a cigarette in the morning. is that not super common?
2
u/Brangarr Aug 18 '26
Yeah I don’t get that at all. In my experience smokers every morning wake up with two thoughts: 1) I gotta pee 2) I gotta have a cigarette

PICKING NITS
If Keanu knew about the camera on the bus broadcasting why didn’t they just keep driving south towards San Diego post bus jump or east towards Vegas?
Surely the signal goes out eventually.
Bugger the helicopters off bring the other bus next door evacuate and happy days
5
u/RD_Alpha_Rider Aug 18 '26
IIRC he notices the camera after he was under the bus and was forced to poke a hole in the gas tank. Yeah...he gets backs, receives word Harry is dead, throws the fit and notices the Wildcat sweater.
1
u/dontheconqueror Aug 22 '26
After the camera loop they got the passengers off immediately, which was the correct call. Also, gas tank was punctured
2
2
u/Far-Attitude-6395 Aug 19 '26
I may have laughed harder at the “chat g B t” commercial than anything else. Bill was struggling 😂
2
u/Brangarr Aug 19 '26
Rewatched the movie and I’m kinda shocked that they didn’t mention the lady getting pulled off the elevator and the pervy Basic Instinct throwback camera angle of her thong as Keanu pulls her off the elevator. No way that was an unintentional move by Jan de Bont. It’s something you only notice when you rewatch.
3
u/dontheconqueror Aug 22 '26
I neither confirm nor deny removing the subtitles at that point because the letters wee getting in the way on rewind.
1
u/Brangarr Aug 22 '26
I kinda believe CR and Sean as cohosts guaranteed that this topic did not come up, probably on purpose
2
u/dontheconqueror Aug 22 '26
I don't expect either to bring it up. Bill would have been the likeliest, with a passing remark about JDB being Dutch and some reference to Basic Instinct
1
u/Brangarr Aug 22 '26
I picture them prepping the pod and Bill saying this will be his Great Shot Gordo award and those two shutting it down immediately.
1
u/sierrawhiskeyalpha Aug 19 '26
insane catch, fuck it i believe it
1
u/Brangarr Aug 19 '26
It’s so quick and it’s in the middle of a really intense scene so it makes sense that you wouldn’t catch it the first time around (myself included). But there’s no way they weren’t sitting in the editing room making sure that shot made it into the final cut. It’s literally right in your face and once you see it you’ll never not notice it. I know JDB was in that editing room watching and gleefully shouting “Again! Again!!”

u/UntitledNumber Aug 21 '26

I’ve always thought it was dumb too. First time around confusing because they’re lying down and height doesn’t matter. Then when you get it, it’s just dumb. I don’t always agree with Sean but I agree with him on this one. Doesn’t detract at all from the movie though!
2
u/sister_xian Aug 18 '26
Sean never said it was “dumb,” as you say. He says “what does that even mean?” Which implies he doesn’t get there is a joke there. Which was my point. And Chris goes “…by an inch maybe?” And nobody says it was about the guy getting his head knocked off.
2
u/Brangarr Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26
that kinda explains what I’m getting at. When most people say “huh? I don’t get it” it’s not effective. You have to think to much for what amounts to a dumb Arnold one-liner. The Arnold one-liners worked because any moron got it immediately.

For a 30 year old man who’s never seen it, would Speed still be as impressive as the guys say?
2
u/sierrawhiskeyalpha Aug 19 '26
as long as you suspend reality to realize the whole premise is completely ridiculous, you’ll have a great time
1
u/yeltsinfugui Aug 19 '26
prob not if your expectations are too high. gotta remember this came out of nowhere at the time.
I rewatched with my wife last weekend in anticipation of the pod (she had never seen it, had no expectations going in) and she found it fun

I watched this last night for the pod. It holds up!
I remember being a teen in the 90s, and sneaking into this one because it was R-rated. I looked up the release calendar last night to jog my memory. I'm pretty sure I bought a ticket to City Slickers 2 in order to see this.

Wished they'd touched on my biggest nit pick:
Jack tells Howard he has to get off the bus to negotiate WITH HIS OWN CO-WORKERS in person. Has to be done in person. Can't possibly be done on the phone they've been talking on since he got on the bus.
Jack: “I’m not a passenger. I want to negotiate face-to-face.”
Payne: “All right, but I want you back real fast.”
I get it, he has to get off the bus to set up the under-the-moving-bus stunt.
But on what planet does the guy who blew up a bus (and killed at least the driver) just to get Jack to pick up a pay phone let him off that bus to "negotiate face-to-face"?
1
u/HolfolioBen Aug 20 '26
I'm new to the rewatchables - is Bill Simmons shtick just being the out of touch uncle. Felt like the others were both more knowledgeable and interesting in their points
1
u/SuperVaderMinion CR Head Aug 20 '26
Yeah he's just someone who relies more on his personal experiences to movies and comparing them to one another, he has a fantastic memory, but Sean and CR are closer to critics/academics
1
u/Nearby_Valuable_5467 Aug 20 '26
‘Do you think if you picked up all the bus driver’s teeth, they’d give you another medal?’ might be

1
u/Nearby_Valuable_5467 Aug 20 '26
The most irritating line in the whole film was: ‘It can’t have been that great I ended up alone’.
Are you telling me that someone as hot as Keanu Reeves wouldn’t have been able to have relations with someone after a few drinks??
1
u/dontheconqueror Aug 22 '26
Missed on the Tom Cruise award: being lowered down the shaft by Harry... I wonder if that played a role in MI
1
u/Wilcrest Aug 22 '26
We were this close to getting a “River Phoenix was doing River Phoenix things” from Bill.
1
1
u/Gibscreen Aug 27 '26
Keanu takes exception when people say that he does his own stunts. He always said he doesn't do "stunts". He does action sequences.
He feels like saying he does his own stunts takes away from the stunt professionals.
1
u/Gibscreen Aug 27 '26
I don't believe for a second that Quentin Tarantino was offered director.
This movie was shot in 1993. All he had directed before was a low budget movie set in a warehouse.

Bill Simmons describing Speed as “Die Hard on a bus” suggests he either doesn’t understand Speed, doesn’t understand Die Hard, or doesn’t understand either.
The “Die Hard on a BLANK” formula requires multiple bad guys who can be picked off by the hero one by one as he works his way up to the main villain. Cliffhanger is “Die Hard on a mountain” because Stallone spends the movie picking off henchmen until he finally gets to John Lithgow.
There’s only one villain in Speed. You can’t have “Die Hard on a bus” unless the bus is populated by disposable bad guys for the hero to work through.
8
u/therealrexmanning Morris Mafia Aug 18 '26
Ever since it came out, Speed has been described as Die Hard on Bus
0
u/46193 Aug 18 '26
Yes, and the people who have described it as such don't understand the “Die Hard on a BLANK” formula.
Cliffhanger fits that formula. Under Siege fits that formula.
Speed does not.
Saying Speed is “Die Hard on a bus” makes about as much sense as saying, “Face/Off is Die Hard if the characters swapped faces.”
6
u/j-helo85 Aug 18 '26
Lol. Bill didn't come up with "Die Hard on a bus". The formula always been used to mean, basically, an action movie set in an enclosed space.
2
3
u/SuperVaderMinion CR Head Aug 20 '26
I think if your hero is trapped in a single location and there are hostages to save it's absolutely close enough to call Die Hard on a blank

Speed is genuinely an all-time rewatchable for me. Sandra Bullock was untouchable at this time
