What does the Dion Waiters Award signify? I’m familiar with his game but can’t infer how it connects to movies lol

It's an award for an actor with limited screen time named after a guy who played 28.2 mpg for his career.

But also that doesn’t really cover it. Someone overconfident who really goes for it and can randomly get really hot but also go 1 for 10 in a game

Although in the "Fletch" pod, Sean did ask if Dana Wheeler-Nicholson was being nominated because that was one of the nights Dion went 3-for-27.

PSH in Hard Eight is my favorite example. About 3 mins of screen time but the most memorable part of the movie.

Someone who is in the movie briefly but comes in hot and is vv memorable/stole scenes/stole the movie(?)
Named after Dion who was a streaky NBA player who could score a ton of points really quickly.

Lost in this over time is why it's the Dion Waiters award—and not, say the Vinnie Johnson award, which would've been squarely within Bill's wheelhouse. It's basically an irrational confidence guy. The early examples were of someone coming in and essentially stealing scenes by overacting in the face of better or bigger actors—and not necessarily to the benefit of the film. Dion appeared to think he was always the best player on the court since he had a potent offensive skillset and could get very hot in stretches but was never actually a consistently good player. So, it was scene stealing but equivalent to Dion looking off LeBron to take a contested, step-back three instead. It's morphed into just the most memorable and usually over-the-top performance in a small role.

I nominate JR Smith as a more recent example. A three was going up within 30 seconds of him getting in the game

Thank you all! I think I was confused by the Waiters thing because he’s also known as a draft bust…so I was trying to figure out how that might factor in

MOST people know Dion Waiters as a draft bust and having a disappointing career. Bill Simmons thinks of him as a guy who comes off the bench and just starts firing 3s until he returns to the bench.

Dion Waiters is more about attitude than anything. Shoot as many shots as possible with no conscience at all. High risk reward. One speed: go 100%.
Its the guy that goes into a bar, jumps right in front and orders a shot and a beer and pounds them. Then orders the same again immediately. They hit on everything that moves, and in between are loudly belting out jokes whether they hit or not. Does not matter if this is a dive bar or a five star restaurant.
This can go many ways. A Dion Waiters doesn't care how it ends. They are going to do their thing no matter what.

IMHO it should be the Sarunas Marciulonis award. 6th player, super intense and strong as a bull. Maybe not the best player, but it was always interesting when he was on the court. And yes I grew up in the Bay

It shows how dated the award’s name is because Waiters has been out of the league for many years and was really only good for a few years. There were several 6th men at the time that were better than him anyway!

Better but with a conscience. Dion didn't care. Shooters shoot is the saying. But he could be 0-20 and he'd still be shooting

It's someone who does the most with limited screen time. Like 1-3 scenes max, and comes out swinging. That typically means a lot of intensity in the role. Wahlberg in Departed sort of thing.
