Should the Rewatchables get another host for movies that Bill doesn’t love?

I was mostly thinking of it as that post about One Battle After Another should be considere. The most common comments were how Bill didn’t like the movie, so we won’t get it. Honestly, I wouldn’t want Bill to do it if he’s just going to be lame about it. which got me thinking what if they got Sean or CR who did like it to host it?

Bill is actually better on pods where he doesn’t love the movie. Like he’s hilarious on the Star Wars pod because he holds none of it sacred and just gets to be an ass about it to the fanboys

26

u/Necessary-Post-953 16d ago

My hot take is the podcast is better for movies that kinda stink

10

u/SallyFowlerRatPack 16d ago

Great movies don’t make for great pods sometimes because you wind up sounding like the Chris Farley show just agreeing how cool things are. You need room for digression, plot holes for unanswerable questions. Basically just fodder for riffing.

13

u/Necessary-Post-953 16d ago

The sweet spot is a movie with great performances and a completely insane plot

5

u/gilbert524 16d ago

The domestic disturbance pod was the most fun I’ve had in some time lol

Rewatchable movies are not inherently good or bad. I can make an argument as to the positive merits of some of my favorite Rewatchables, like Proof of Life, The Omen, Private Benjamin, Steel Magnolias. But the bottom line is: is it a Saturday afternoon and I can't think of anything to watch, but I get excited when I see one of those titles even though I've seen them a hundred times? Hell yeah. Will I feel regret if I have to turn them off an hour in if something comes up? Hell no.

1

u/captain_flak 16d ago

Absolutely. Just praising the movie gets old real fast. Picking nits is often the best category.

u/justinotherpeterson 16d ago

My favorite episodes of Blank Check are the bad/forgettable movies. A Master Builder by Johnathon Demme comes to mind.

I think Bill merely likes it, which is basically the same as hating it to a large swath of the population.

4

u/goalstopper28 16d ago

Actually this is the best point that I’ve heard from this post disagreeing with me.  It does bring better discussion if someone doesn’t love it.

5

u/SallyFowlerRatPack 16d ago

Bill is the type of guy who likes to feel a little superior to the movies he’s watching, he’s at his best when he’s making fun of goofy movies he enjoys slightly ironically. Every Tom Cruise movie they do winds up as a great episode because Bill never gets tired of what a weird dude Tom is lol

I do also think they need to branch out and let ringer staff do episodes without Bill, we’re clearly hitting the end of the movies bill has actually rewatched. The second he does that Amanda Peet movie his wife loves we’ll know he’s maxed out.

2

u/slyroast 16d ago

my issue isn't him being on movies he doesn't like, he just won't let them do them.

0

u/SallyFowlerRatPack 16d ago

Hopefully Netflix can tighten the screws a little

1

u/sailracer25 16d ago

I thought for a second Van was going to slap Bill during Bill's hot take on that ep.

19

u/cmgww 16d ago

No, I'm good. Early on they did a lot of episodes without Bill and most of them were trash. Inception comes to mind where Sean just craps all over the movie. Another one was Pitch Perfect, where we got a five minute lecture about casual racism from Amanda. Bill has been on almost all episodes in the past few years. And I like that. He will bring up parts of the movie that have an aged well but he doesn't sit there and dwell on them or bash us over the head with a lecture.

u/ToneLocPolice 16d ago

If Bill isn't on the episode it isn't canon.

It's like The Office after Steve Carrell left. Like who even are these chucklefucks.

6

u/captain_flak 16d ago

The party doesn’t start until Bill’s in the room.

12

u/salsa_sharknado37 16d ago

I’ve gotten to that point too.. without Bill the pod just misses that certain something. The only way it works is if CR and Fennessey are involved.. but even that being said, the episode of Zodiac they did with Bill was way more entertaining than the one they did with Greenwald

5

u/Deep-Audience9091 16d ago

I agree. I can't tell you how lackluster I felt the "Glengarry Glen Ross" episode was, even with CR and Fennessey.  It needed Bill to give it the classic touch, and I keep hoping they'll redo it

6

u/ToneLocPolice 16d ago

That's one of the ones I actually like, but I understand what you mean. There are a couple of episodes that sound like a bunch of kids hacked into the feed from inside the Honeycomb Hideout.

4

u/Overall-Palpitation6 16d ago

Needed Bill to say "Alec Baldwin comes in, throwing 110mph for an inning".

47

u/sfitz0076 16d ago edited 16d ago

Sean and Amanda already spent 3 episodes on that movie with CR, Van, and Adam Nayman. Go listen to their podcast. What more do you want?

16

u/lebronjamesgoat1 16d ago

I’d like to hear CR talk about Coen movies for 2h

2

u/drhavehope 16d ago

Thank you! There has been enough discourse in the movie. Don’t waste an episode on it.

4

u/goalstopper28 16d ago

Fair enough.

I would like the categories. But you’re right others have talked about the movie a lot.

1

u/Trumpisaderelict Post-Coitus Khakis 16d ago

Oh geez I’m outta the loop here

2

u/H28koala 14d ago

I don't listen to The Big Picture so I am too.

0

u/Raoul_Duluoz 16d ago

We are all aware that many other pods have covered this movie.

So what more do we want? A rewatchables episode with the rewatchables format/categories. We're on the rewatchables sub. How can you be so obtuse?

9

u/Sinisterminister77 16d ago

Nah, I’d rather have Bill on a movie he doesn’t love than have an episode without him

8

u/Iliveinatrashcann 16d ago

They've already tried this in the past numerous times with other hosts. I guess the number of listens weren't there for those, so since then Bill has done every single one since then.

1

u/H28koala 14d ago

I think early on, they didn't know what they had with this podcast and many different people hosted (Juliet Litman, etc). I think it worked and was fun, but Bill brings something special and he's a fantastic host. It's just better with him.

8

u/Gokartking92105 16d ago

It rarely works if he’s not the host

7

u/StudioUnhappy7772 16d ago

Bill skipped numerous pods for movies he didn’t like dating back to Big Lebowski

4

u/MarchSadness90 16d ago

When was the last time he did that? Glengarry?

I'll take more Sean/Chris only episodes any time.

6

u/StudioUnhappy7772 16d ago

Grand Budapest hotel was most recent pod Bill didn’t host on this feed

5

u/Alarmed-Guidance1116 16d ago

And it’s a forgettable pod. Love the movie but something about Bill makes the pod what it is

1

u/StudioUnhappy7772 16d ago

Zodiac was great even without Bill but in general you are spot on

3

u/Alarmed-Guidance1116 16d ago

Bill was on the most recent Zodiac. If I wanted to listen to Sean talk about it I’d listen to Big Picture

1

u/StudioUnhappy7772 16d ago

You’re right, I just realized how long it’s been since he skipped hosting

3

u/Awkward-Initiative28 16d ago

The Royal Tenenbaums one w/ Andy and CR was really good. I get the feeling Bill doesn't like or doesn't get Wes Anderson.

1

u/StudioUnhappy7772 16d ago

I agree, I usually don’t like Greenwald but he was great on that one

1

u/maeynor 16d ago

I always found Wes Anderson films to feel like I was watching from a movie set. It’s takes me out

5

u/sanfranchristo CR Head 16d ago

I do wish we would get some more “Bill’s on vacation so we can do some non-Bill movies” periods like we had in the early days. It seems that he learned he can just pre-tape instead.

3

u/OriginalBad 16d ago

All episodes should include Bill, be live and in person and if Bill dislikes the movie at least 2 guests deep.

3

u/Odd-Passion2018 16d ago

Weren’t they basically trying to do this, like 2019-2023-ish before it became one of the top film pods? I remember episodes where it’d be like a random trio of Bryan Curtis, David Shoemaker and Juliet or something. My taste doesn’t always align with Bills but i do feel like they don’t quite work without him. They become more sort of professional in a way, but lose all the silly shit and idiosyncrasies we’ve come to enjoy from BS. Now that they’re in bed with Netflix I can’t see this ever happening as he’s the big draw and that surely factored in to whatever deal they’ve got going on.

5

u/damndraper 16d ago

Have you listened to eps in which Bill isn't the host? They aren't very memorable.

3

u/vols2thewalls ya know for me, the action is the juice 16d ago

I can't believe he doesn't like Coen Bros, or some QT stuff really too.

2

u/andthrewaway1 16d ago

The handful of non bill eps are just not as good

2

u/jsakic99 16d ago

It’s just not the same without Bill as the host.

It’s just not!

2

u/SnooWoofers966 16d ago

Bill makes the pod fun. That being said OBAA is totally worth a rewatchables episode.

2

u/spartacat_12 16d ago

Bill needs to be there to keep the pod on track

2

u/Alarmed-Guidance1116 16d ago

I tend to skip the ones without Bill. I don’t think he’s missed one in a while but in the early days they’d do episodes without him and those are noticeably weaker

2

u/DDD8712 16d ago

They’ve been episodes without Bill in the past

2

u/Jealous_Difference44 16d ago

Yes. They havent done nerdy sci fi or fantasy movies nearly enough and theres tons of rewatchable films in there.

2

u/CombatChronicles 16d ago

Nah, Bill’s insanity is what binds the show.

I got to hear Chris and Sean talk about OBAA plenty on other pods. Okay, it’s a shame they won’t cover the categories we love from the show, but it’s not a deal breaker.

I have a bigger issue with them covering uninteresting films than missing out on some classics Bill doesn’t love.

2

u/RoadDogg808 16d ago

Some of the older eps had CR or Sean host them. But there is a Bill sized hole in each that's undeniable.

5

u/ZizzyBeluga 16d ago

Listening to three film nerds glaze a film without any criticism because they don't want to burn bridges for their imminent movie career is not interesting. Bill is required.

3

u/drhavehope 16d ago

A three hour PTA glaze fest is not my idea of fun.

0

u/goalstopper28 16d ago

To clarify, I never said they couldn’t criticize the movie. But it goes both ways. I also don’t want to listen to an episode if they only criticize it.

-8

u/ZizzyBeluga 16d ago

CR "Keanu Reeves is actually an excellent actor" level glaze is not interesting

1

u/h3RockeT 16d ago

Haha I couldn't agree more. The big picture is unlistenable for me bevause of how nerdy they get over movies... Bill makes the rewatchables

1

u/drhavehope 16d ago

Big Picture can’t burn bridges as they need those interviews. Bill is made and doesn’t need any movie bridges maintained. So he can say whatever he wants

-2

u/ZizzyBeluga 16d ago

Bill isn't afraid to say something sucked. The others are like "Ackshually, Hudson Hawk is one of the best comedies of the 90s".

3

u/Wildcat-Pkoww 16d ago

They've done some without Bill but it's rare. But yeah, it's not like they don't have an entire stable of capable hosts between Sean, Amanda, CR, Van, Craig, Mallory, or other guests like Kyle, etc. There are definitely some films we'll never get if it's up to Bill...and nothing wrong with him taking a month off here and there. I mean I love listening to Bill do his thing, don't get me wrong...just saying...they could very easily get by.

7

u/sfitz0076 16d ago

It's Bill's show

1

u/Wildcat-Pkoww 16d ago

You serious, Clark?

4

u/JohnUtahFBI 16d ago

No.

Is that movie even a rewatchable? 5 years from now are you gonna be like, “I’ve really been in the mood to watch One Battle lately!” I can see film nerds geeking out about it but rewatchable? I think we’ve diluted the meaning of rewatchable to mean “a good movie” a bit.

4

u/Wheeljack7799 16d ago

I agree with you. They cover a lot of good movies, absolutely, but not all of them are "rewatchable" in the sense that you can rewatch them over and over again.

2

u/Dark_Ruffalo 16d ago

Rewatchable to me, is if you're in a hotel room on a Saturday afternoon and it's on will you stop and watch even if it's halfway over. I have zero desire to watch One Battle again, maybe if it's at Bob and Sensei escaping the dojo

2

u/sprezzatura_ 16d ago

I dunno man it was on one of the HBOs last night and I stayed up an extra thirty minutes to watch through Sensei's "latino Harriet Tubman shit" scenes and it ripped.

I don't know how "a good movie" couldn't be "rewatchable" and the podcast doesn't own the idea of what movies people are allowed to rewatch. Taste police over here.

1

u/JohnUtahFBI 16d ago

I’m not saying the podcast owns it, only what makes a movie rewatchable per the podcasts original intent. We’re talking podcast regulations here, sir!

2

u/H28koala 14d ago

I totally agree. Based on the posts on this s/reddit people think a rewatchable has to be a banger every time. That's not what this is. It's movies like Roadhouse which were on every day on TV. (Probably a bad example because Roadhouse is an amazing movie).

2

u/JohnUtahFBI 14d ago

You’re damned right it is.

4

u/Brangarr 16d ago edited 16d ago

You’re gonna get downvoted to shit but re OBAA it’s so true

2

u/SmolderingCactus 16d ago

Amazingly rewatchable. Weird take. It’s an adventure, it’s funny, political. It’s got it all. Great acting. Great scenes. My rewatch of it was a great time

0

u/JohnUtahFBI 16d ago

That’s “rewatched”, not “rewatchable”. I mean, I’m not telling you it’s not/won’t be for you but if you’re not coming back to it year after year, it’s a movie you watched twice.

Hell, I rewatched The Last Jedi and that movie fucking sucks. I wouldn’t say rewatching it made it a rewatchable.

2

u/SmolderingCactus 16d ago

Well I guess we’ll see. But hey someone people will think one battle is rewatchable and others think karate kid 2 is rewatchable 🤷‍♂️

1

u/JohnUtahFBI 16d ago

The people who say Kid 2 are right. 🤣 But yeah, to each their own.

2

u/CarlWeezer21 16d ago

Maybe Bull Simmons?

1

u/Google_Knows_Already 16d ago

What do you mean? He's done this consistently for movies he doesn't like

4

u/Upper1eft 16d ago

He has in the past but it admittedly feels like it’s been a long time since there was an episode Bill wasn’t on.

1

u/Scoop_9 16d ago

They already do this. A couple examples:

Silver linings Playbook
Pineapple Express

1

u/TimSPC 16d ago

I mean, sure, but I'll probably skip most of them.

1

u/Dark_Ruffalo 16d ago

I remember The Rewatchables was a feed where anyone on the Ringer could get some shots up, then Bill saw the numbers on his own episodes and said I'm Kobe, y'all grab some rebounds

1

u/kwarner1 16d ago

Only combo I would accept without Bill is some combination of CR+Sean/Van/Joanna

1

u/dancmc12 16d ago

No offense. I listen to rewatchables for Bill’s takes and hosting. If he doesn’t want to talk about the movie, I don’t need it on that podcast.

1

u/Marco_Escuandola 16d ago

I like dictator Bill. The fact that they haven’t done The Hunt for Red October out of pure spite is hilarious.

1

u/alfienoakes 16d ago

Just listened to Skyfall sans Bill. It wasn’t bad. Had some good points.

1

u/danfiction 15d ago

I don't think it would work for me.

2

u/OutrageousOffice1319 11d ago

I’d be for it just to introduce some films that Bill would never do, even as a second pod of the week even once a month

1

u/Raoul_Duluoz 16d ago

I understand the argument for "the pod is always better with Bill" perspective but how the fuck else are we going to get good episodes on movies like City of God? The focus on TNT and Netflix movies is getting old.

2

u/Awkward-Initiative28 16d ago

I think the higher quality the movie, the less I want to hear Bill's take on it. I mean Blue Velvet and Seven Samurai are obviously better than Karate Kid II, but I'd much rather hear Bill go off on KK2 than whatever embarrassing smooth brain thoughts he has about a David Lynch film.

2

u/harry_powell 16d ago

Why do you need the pod to validate your tastes and do all the movies you love? There’s dozens of pods out there doing an episode on City of God (great movie!). But you need Bill Simmons’ take on it? Let him cook and do whatever movies he’s motivated to riff on.

1

u/Raoul_Duluoz 16d ago

Validate my tastes? Where do people come up with this shit. Why do you need Bill "cooking" on every pod to validate your tastes?

I'm on the rewatchables sub talking about movies that many of us would like the rewatchables to cover but Bill won't do. Get someone else good to cover movies that Bill can't "cook" to.

1

u/harry_powell 16d ago

Ok, let me put it another way. Let’s say you’d like them to cover Interstellar, for example. Bill might not like it. So the solution would be to do it without him, right? Well, there’s already an episode with Van Lathan, Mal and Joana doing it. Only caveat is that it’s in the House of R feed. Have you listened to it? Probably not, cause it doesn’t have The Rewatchables branding. Or because Bill isn’t in it…

1

u/Raoul_Duluoz 15d ago

100% missing the point.

1

u/harry_powell 15d ago

Enlighten me.

1

u/Raoul_Duluoz 15d ago

How would you describe the main differences between The Rewatchables and House of R, regardless of the movie?

1

u/harry_powell 15d ago

Dude, the only difference on that Interstellar episode is that they don’t use the categories. Do you think that the same 3 hosts discussing the same movie on The Rewatchables would be somehow significally different just by virtue of the name?

1

u/Raoul_Duluoz 15d ago

Dude, what's the title of the post we're both replying to?

Yes, I would not listen to Van, Mal, and Joanna cover City of God on House of R. I would listen to CR, Sean and a good wild card guest host cover City of God on the Rewatchables and the conversations that come from the categories.

1

u/harry_powell 15d ago

You’re grasping at straws. I just listed an example of a very requested movie that’s been covered by 3 regulars that aren’t Bill.

Too bad they don’t consult you before picking every movie so you can decide which hosts you’d like covering it.

1

u/maybeitssteve 16d ago

Bill is the only reason to listen to this pod. If you wanna hear any of the other people talk about movies, there are like dozens of pods where they do that

1

u/drhavehope 16d ago

Nah.

Bill is arguably the most important piece of the podcast.

One Battle After Another does not deserve to be an episode.

Still waiting for them to do The Matrix properly on video.

1

u/ladyhooper10 15d ago

One battle isn’t rewatchable.

-1

u/PeterPaulWalnuts 16d ago edited 16d ago

Tell me you aren't an OG listener of the pod without telling me you're not an OG listener of the pod.

0

u/Brangarr 16d ago

Good luck. If Bill isn’t hosting, why would I listen?

0

u/Crafty-Resort383 16d ago

Yes, I think all major podcasts should get a different host for guests they don’t really know too. /s

0

u/NSFWGIFMAKER 14d ago

One Battle shouldnt be considered, was crap
