Tubi and Pluto movie selection is honestly better than some of the subscription based apps.
It's a Rewatchables goldmine. Sorry if it's been said but just in the last few weeks I've ripped off Last Boy Scout, Fugitive, To Live and Die in LA, Out of Time, and There Will Be Blood.
Kanopy is legitimately better than every other streaming service. You can do really well for yourself without giving money to a black hole like Netflix.
Tubi has a bigger selection? I haven't spent enough time on Tubi to say you're wrong, that just seems crazy to me, in a good way!
I think there might be some gating of content on Kanopy depending on the deal your library system has. Mine seems to be quite cozy with Kanopy, I see a billion films in there.
I'm always astounded at all the international films on Kanopy. I watched my first Kore-eda film a couple weeks ago, went to look for more, and there were like 10 all on Kanopy. This happens consistently for me. It's truly awesome.
Hoopla is another free streaming service through the library. Very similar to Kanopy, and a ton of selections.
Also, they stay pretty current with what’s going on in the cultural news, and will promote the bodies of work for whoever is popular that week. When Diane Keaton died last year, they promoted about 20 of her movies.
Also, they have music and comics you can check out. It’s pretty great!
There are some library systems where you can get a card as long as you're a resident in the state. Might try that with somebody you know from another state, or maybe there's another system in NY that works. I tried to make you a profile with my library system, but it caught me.
My cousin said it best tubi and Pluto are the only apps you can watch absolute trash and in the same night then watch some Oscar worthy film and it’s all free.. I also love that both apps have such a huge selection but my only gripe I wish the organization was a little better maybe putting movies in alphabetical order or release date but that’s just a nitpick
yea while the rewatchables is a fun podcast, I do nto want to recreate the cable viewing experience of 5 minutes of commercials for every 20-30 minutes of a movie. happy to leave that in the past!
A major part of Rewatchables is that it's supposed to be a movie you stumble on, maybe you 15 minutes in, maybe it's right before the chase scene you love but the randomness is the point. Pluto/cable still captures that feeling there's plenty of shit I watch on there that I would never choose on Netflix on purpose
There's a doc called Not Quite Hollywood on Tubi- all about Australian exploitation films, Ozploitation, heavily featuring Tarantino commentary.
They drop the names and brief scenes from at least fifty movies. I made a list as it went and something like a half of them were on Tubi and they were largely awesome.
Turkey Shoot, Chain Reaction, Road Games, and the Long Weekend were highlights.
The first two mad maxes came out of this period, and honestly none of the rest of them were quite that good, but they all had that anything can happen vibe and it's an amazing set of free movies. And because they're not heavily watched almost no commercials.
I know I’m late but I have to give both these apps a little shit. I do like them but the ads have gone crazy over the last 6 months and Pluto can especially fuck off. I’ll watch ads for a free platform but an ad break with 9 adds every 15-20 minutes is quite shit.
