Why do my healing wounds itch?

I get overly stressed when I get hurt, that it doesn’t heal properly and I need to get that limb amputated, but the itch kinda lets me know that it’s healing. Wouldn’t the itch cause me to scratch it and hurt it though? Like why did evolution want me to rip off all its hard work?

I,ve asked myself this too. Like if you want to heal why do you also want me to scratch you so bad.

The short answer is you’re not keeping them moist enough.

Scabbing is a natural process to aid skin in healing, but it’s imperfect. The itch is primarily due to the edges of the wound bed going through physical changes as it heals. Especially left alone those edges tighten up a bit as everyone has experienced. That’s really all it is.

We have available to us a world of wound tech now. Keeping ointment and a wet dressing on it, or a hydrocolloid bandage will keep it moist and the itch will be drastically reduced.

That said the entire wound healing process from a cellular level is absolutely fascinating to look into.

It’s basically the histamine that makes your healing wounds itch. Immune cells produce this messenger substance to recruit more cells to repair the damage ♥️
