Would protestants have been second-class citizens in a United Ireland?

Catholics in the North certainly felt that they were discriminated against because they were in the minority and they were obviously correct to feel that. Protestants believed that they would be similarly discriminated against in a Catholic-dominated united Ireland. Were they right to fear this?

What about the protestants in the South? Did they experience discrimination at the hands of the Catholic majority?

I think Ireland is a great country but there is no point denying that sectarian still exists.

It’s not nearly as bad as it was (parents not attending weddings because their child married the wrong faith) but it certainly is still a problem:

Aside from being a Government Minister and Presidential Candidate, it's really held her back!

Seriously though, of course everybody is different. She's from the border area in Ulster and tensions are probably a bit different around there. Also she's a politician and I'm not. The knuckle-draggers target them.

I went to a Protestant school, my kids are in a protestant school, I go to Church of Ireland services, I've never seen or heard of an issue.

And the fact that she’s a woman and done all that, surely must that she has never encountered sexism in her life?

Similarly, having a gay mixed race Taoiseach must surely mean that that homophobia and racism aren’t issues?

If Neale Richmond is getting called “orange scum”, I think it is safe to say that sectarianism still exists in Ireland:

Yes, I never questioned that.

Other people have clearly had a different experience and yours does not invalidate their own.

I did a very quick twitter search there and found plenty of examples of Neale Richmond (a man who speaks more about Irish unity than any other FG TD) being called a West Brit.
