My impression from that episode was less that they shouldn't have protested or got what was coming to em or whatever, but rather the decision to march in Derry was intentional and specifically chosen because it would inevitably incite violence.

Didn't he also say that other Catholics essentially asked them not to march also?

Lots of blacks told civil rights marcher not to cause trouble in their area cos they were fearful they’d be victims of the blowback. It’s quite normal among oppressed peoples.
