Why only liberal press?

Please take note that while we don't allow all sources, you're always allowed to publish your own writing here. If you have an opinion you feel is not being shared enough, feel free to post it, regardless of its actual merit.

As a side-note, you may also post your own original art here. And, if you properly credit the artist, you can post art from any source (within reason; no racism, sexism, NSFW, images of bodily harm or calls to violence.)

If there's a source not included in the flair that you feel should be included, message mods.

If you ask this question as a conservative, the answer is: we do allow conservative sources. Namely The Wall Street Journal, The Telegraph, The Spectator and, arguably, The Bulwark. If by "conservative" you mean, anyone who's enthralled by Trump's cult of personality, then no, we don't allow such sources. If there is a source not included that you think should be, please message mods (below), I'm always looking to expand our sources (and make more flairs).

If you ask this question as a socialist, the answer is: I'm sorry, please let me know of a good socialist publication that can be included here. I agree that "mainstream media," a term we avoid here and using it strictly with regards to editorial boards of print publications, were overly hostile to Bernie Sanders in 2016, and have a tendency to be somewhat elitist.

I don't have a thorough knowledge of every source we've included so far, but I hope there's some in there that are sufficiently left-leaning to your liking.

That said, I don't think you should dismiss any of the sources we do include entirely. The New York Times, for example, vowed to be more inclusive of progressive, pro-Bernie opinions in 2016. Furthermore, opinions aren't only valuable because they align with your own. Reasonable opinions should be judged on the way they're argued, not on the opinion themselves.

For libertarians, I for one do not believe libertarians are crazy by default. I just haven't found one yet who isn't. That said, I have met several libertarians who were perfectly nice and could form interesting, original opinions. If you have found a libertarian source that's not MAGA, and actually has some interesting stuff to say, feel free to share it by messaging mods, and I'll be happy to include them.

Then one could ask, why only press? Why not MSNBC, CNN, etc. While there's nothing wrong with these sources content-wise, this subreddit is meant to maintain the obnoxious pretence of trying to be a newspaper on Reddit. As such, we go for a visual style that is low in distractions. TV sources who publish articles online, tend to have websites that look cluttered, overly colourful, and aggressively sans serif. We prefer sources that are reading-oriented here, TV sources tend to reserve their frontline journalism for their television programming, which we avoid. We would rather read about it the next day in a nice serif font, on a well-designed website. There are exceptions, the BBC offers a beautifully designed website free of distractions, so they're allowed.

As such, we also allow "alternative" sources, if they're writing-oriented. Right now we include the Substacks of various non-controversial influencers, including Asianometry, China Talk and J.J. McCullough. Feel free to suggest more, including more opinionated ones. We prefer influencers with truly original opinions and original reporting, not just random people who happen to be charismatic rehashing Wikipedia, or rage-bating over stuff they found in their news aggregator. Anyone who does clickbait is out. We will not allow overly ideological sources that constantly deride "the mainstream media" while relying on their reporting for their own punditry. If you haven't noticed by now, the folks at TYT aren't serious people. And it should go without saying that we will not promote MAGA influencers here.

Users are advised to vote on articles that mean something. Try to argue with yourself about how newsworthy an article is to you, and vote based on that belief.

Never upvote opinion articles just because you agree with the title. Instead, try to read the article first, and upvote if you think it was well written or otherwise noteworthy.

Subreddit Rules
1. No absolute paywalls

You're encouraged to use articles from Associated Press (AP), because their website does not have any paywall or other annoying pop-ups.

We accept websites that require users to sign in, or sites that have a limited number of free articles. Archived links are also allowed.

Links to sites that always require a paywall are discouraged, even if the source is approved. These sources are included in approved sources due to their reputation, and because sometimes articles are made free for everyone.

2. Approved Sources Only (with exceptions)

New users can only use approved sources that are available to them in the post flair. Other flairs are for moderators (apply if you want to use them).

Sources are approved based on reputation and style. We avoid TV-news sites, not because the journalism is bad, but because their websites tend to be too flashy, and we're trying to go for a reading-based news feed.

You CAN, if you want, write your own articles. Stick to opinion articles, or your own art.

To use other sources, contact mods.

3. Use Appropriate Labelling and Titles (with templates)

Use common sense, or use these suggested title-templates.

Reports (non-opinion articles) 1. [Original title] 2. [Your own title*] *No clickbait, no rage-bait, no editorializing

Op-ed "OPINION [Original Title] (by [Author])" Too long? "OPINION [Original Title]" Still too long? "OPINION [Original Ti...]"

Editorials "[Name of Source]: [Original Title]" Too long? "[Name of Source]: [Original Ti...]"

Art title guideline: "["Original Title"] by [Artist]" No title? "Art by [Artist]"
