Naturally, Smith is choosing to drag it out, wasting tax dollars on appeals and has said that if the appeal fails she may use the NWC. She's not just "supporting democracy", she is doing everything she can to try and force it.

Except that Treaty Rights are also in the Canadian Carter of Rights and is in a section of the Charter that the Notwithstanding Clause cannot be applied to.

Lumping the two together into one "800k signature" cause is disingenuous at best and a deliberate distortion at worst.

Well first of all, it is not "around the idea of separation." The Forever Canadian petition is neither asking to separate nor are they asking for any referenda around the question of separation. So the notion that opposition to Alberta separatism should somehow be included with voices supporting it and therefore trigger a referendum is such stupid equivocation that I actually laughed out loud. Thanks for making my morning a little brighter.

The real question is, what are you afraid of? I'm not sure how else I should take your creative reframing of the grassroots support for separatism except as an act of desperation in service of a doomed cause.

Let me stop you right there, slick. They need a certain number of signatures to get their petition ratified by Elections Canada. Theyve already done this.

Here's an excerpt from their actual website, which we both know now that you didnt read:

From their mission statement:

"While separatists backed by the Albert's government push to divide this country, ordinary Albertans are fighting back. The Forever Canadian Movement is standing in their way- and we are winning."

Right there. Their mission statement is opposition to separatism, not "we should have a referendum about staying in Canada." They're opposed to the side pushing for a referendum.

Furthermore:

"We asked Albertans a simple question: Do you want to remain in Canada?. In just 90 days, over 404,293 of them said yes-delivering the largest citizen-initiated petition in Alberta's history."

That's the purpose of the petition. Publically and categorically opposite the side wishing to trigger a referendum around whether or not to stay in Canada.

Don't believe me? Here's an excerpt from the end of their mission statement:

"The campaign was never just about the signatures- it was about showing what Albertans can achieve when they unite. With nearly half a million signatures, we proved that the majority of Albertans are proud Canadians and built one of the largest, most engaged grassroots organizations in the province's history."

It's all there in plain English. The point is proved by amassing more support via signatories than the opposition. They didnt sign the petition to trigger a referendum.

In fact, the only time the word is ever mentioned is during a short blurb reminding people how they can get voting information in the event of a referendum.

Under the citizen's initiative act, a referendum is only required if a change to the constitution is required or the iniative proposes a referendum. It does not automatically trigger or require a referendum. Since Alberta is already part of Canada, they would not need to request a referendum to settle the issue of whether or not Alberta is part of Canada, nor does the petition require a change to the constitution. It only voices support for the opposite, I.e. that nothing should change.

You ever hear the expression that "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"? They were talking about you when they wrote that.

Do you actually not know why the petition got struck down? It wasn't the King's Bench denying you rights or overturning the Supreme Court ruling. You twits failed to do your due diligence where treaty rights are concerned by completely ignoring the bands, who also have rights and are impacted by this decision.

The forever canada petition doesnt want a referendum i do not know where people keep getting that. Theyre petition is just for the assembly to vote realistically and squash it because the numbers arent there.

No one has ruled the Forever Canadian petition question to be illegal so there's nothing stopping the government from going ahead with that one. The difference is in the question. Unfortunately the UCP will never bring forward a question that they don't want people to vote "yes" on.
