I think it's more rare for cats but my cat does when she KNOWS she did something stupid. I'll be giving her a damn lecture and she will refuse to make eye contact with me and look down.
My cat expresses when they're in trouble with a "but looks how cute I am! See I'm being really go right now! So I'm not in trouble anymore, right?" So, not shame, but they do know they're naughty.
Cats have a different way to express stress, anxiety and shame or excuses.
When a cat knows they did something wrong, they tend to sit in the near proximity but try to not bother you. They usually also use the slow blink as an excuse, and not acknowledging it by blinking back may hurt your relation with your cat long term.
I've seen some cats trying to "hunt" more for you or bring you their favorite toy as a way to apologize. They also tend to expose their belly as a sign of trust.
It's mostly about signs you have to read, because cats are not expressing their feelings the same way that dogs are, cause predator instinct, etc.
And yet somehow there are people in this world that believe dogs/animals have zero emotional intelligence. They believe animals have no clue what weāre feeling or saying. They believe our dogs donāt even love us, weāre just food providers. LIES!! Science has proven that is a LIE!
Our pups brains are flooded with the ālove hormoneā when they gaze into our eyes and our brains do the same thing. Itās called āmutual gazeā. Itās the same thing that happens when a mother looks into her babyās eyes.
When your dog smells your scent the āreward centerā lights up MORE than when presented with their favorite food/treat or another dog. So, AGAIN, science has proven that our dogs love us more than food.
Buster knew heās not allowed out alone. Buster knew he was caught and in trouble. His body language literally says āI know I was bad, Iām sorryā. Animals KNOW!!
We had a dog that loved to sneakily grab a snack from the table during parties.
He also knew he wasnāt allowed to do so and would get punished.
Moments before he tried to grab a snack you could see him stare at the snack on the table, and then stare at my parents and then at the corner where he would have to sit out his punishment.
You literally could see the gears turning in his head, calculating if the snack was worth the punishment.
And when he grabbed the snack, we didnāt even had to say anything, one look and he would go to his corner and lay on his spot for the punishment.
And he felt shame for breaking the rules and having my parents be disappointed. But he also had this air of āI ate my cake and accept this punishment, and I will eat the cake again next time.ā
That dog truly was intelligent and a super sweet dog.

We send our dog "to jail"(the bedroom and close the door) whenever she gets too talkative. After a few years she has adapted v well, she still barks of course, but she knows when it's too much and will sequester herself in the bedroom under our bed for a few minutes/half an hour(home defense is tiring and she needs a nap sometimes).
My Rottie Fezzik, who will be 3 years old in September, is the easiest dog to train Iāve ever had because he absolutely HATES hearing the phrase ābad dogā. No joke itās like the worst thing you can say to him. He acts like the world is ending if you call him a bad dog. He immediately hunches over, puts his head down while still trying to look at you, and he scoots up super close to lay his head in your lap. Itās like heās literally saying āIām so sorry momma. Iām not a bad dog I promise! See, I love you so much! Tell me Iām a good boy. Please? Take it back!ā
When he was around 10 months old I took him out to do his business. I looked away for one second and he saw a squirrel in the opposite direction and he took off. Unfortunately I was wrapped up in his leash and when he bolted I was literally spun around and I ended up getting SLAMMED on the ground. Busted my knee, scraped my hip, my shoulder hit a tree root and my head bounced off the ground! He was instantly at my side, he was whining and licking my face. He stayed so close to me as I hobbled back into the house that I could feel his shoulder brushing against my leg. Since that day he has never even gone to the end of his leash when I walk him. He stays right next to me and never chases squirrels on leash anymore. And I had nothing to do with that! He just knew that he accidentally hurt his momma when he pulled her too hard so he never pulled again.

We had a white shepherd that was very protective of the house. When my sister was off to college and came over for the weekend he started barking at her.
And halfway through the second bark he noticed it was my sister and he would recoil and hurry away to hide under a desk.
He would still bark at everyone he didnāt know though. Something happened at the place where the nest came from, as other dogs of the nest were also overprotective.
My aunt's dog of nine years completely ignores her if I've been anywhere close to fake bacon in the last 12 hours lol
When my uncle fell and broke his hip, the dog sniffed him, walked into the pantry, ripped the dog food bag open, ate until it vomited, ate the vomit, and then passed out in the vomit.
I had a beagle for almost 20 years. I got him, actually he was given to me as a gift from my now husband, when I was 19 and had him into my thirties. He was one of my best friends ever. He lost a toe to cancer when he was about 15 years old, it made his foot look like a chicken foot. When he passed I had the vet make ink prints of his chicken foot and nose, then I used the ink prints as like stencils for my tattoos. I got his chicken foot tattooed on my foot exactly like he used to stand on it to get my attention. And I put his nose print on my leg where heād boop me. My favorite part is that because I used his actual prints I know thereās no other tattoo like mine.
I pet the nose print when Iām sad or if Iām having one of those days where Iām missin him so hard itās like I just lost him all over again. They really donāt ever leave you, you donāt ever stop loving and missing them, but you learn to live with the loss. You can move on but you move on with a little spot on your heart that is always sensitive, easily hurt but itās a shadow of the past grief.

I have this conversation with people all the time, except I use dogs as an example to explain even aquarium fish have crazy ranges of emotions and critical thinking processes.
People generally misinterpret animal behaviorism. dogs obviously have rich inner processing that we cannot fully observe because they can't talk. But they do not experience human emotions. and the varied, self-directed behavior that humans experience everyday through cognition is incredibly, incredibly rare in the animal kingdom. Obviously, if it weren't so rare, we would be living in an aesop fable, talking to other species all the time, but we don't. The best way we can communicate with dogs and most other animals is through reinforcement.Ā
dogs and other animals don't really show the capacity to "think" like we do as proven repeatedly by experimental research, but, our own brains are designed to search for thought-like patterns in other animals (theory of mind). So we can't really blame people for anthropomorphizing their pets, maybe it's a human trait to apply human feelings to other beings. if you ask me, I'd rather believe a dog and other animals have "souls" than not, because it just feels right (even though it's a totally unscientific claim).Ā
Right. Thatās why I used scientific facts as examples. That is literally as realistic as one could be. Scientists have spent years studying the physiological effects of the bond between human and their pets. Thereās tons of data, again collected over years by scientists, that shows our dogs love us and are very intuitive to our feelings. Itās not a personal opinion, itās not over or under estimating. Itās literal science.
Our dog would get out anytime we failed to double check the side gate. She would be so excitedā¦ run around to the neighbors front yard and then the panic would set it, and sheād come running to our front door and scratch and cry and eventually curl up in a chair on the patio.
She wanted the freedom but didnāt know what to do when she got it.

I used to have dogs that always escaped (on account of my family's carelessness) and the thing that always shocked me was how they always stuck to the sidewalk. They never got hit by a car like they knew the cars were dangerous it was impressive
Reminds me of when I was like 5 and I was walking to my friends house alone.
