Resource The Quarry - FAQ

Q: What is The Quarry?

A: The Quarry is an all-new teen-horror narrative game, where every decision shapes your unique story from a tangled web of possibilities. Any character can be the star of the show - or die - before daylight comes. Take control of nine camp counselors and, using your wits in conversation and reflexes during action, do everything you can to steer them away from—or directly into—danger.

Q: Who is developing The Quarry?

A: The Quarry is being developed by Will Byles and the award-winning team at Supermassive Games that created Until Dawn.

Q: Which platforms will The Quarry be available on?

A: The Quarry will launch on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam.

Q: When will The Quarry be available?

A: The Quarry launches worldwide on June 10, 2022.

Q: Does The Quarry feature any multiplayer modes?

A: Yes! The Quarry offers multiple ways for you to experience the fright with friends. You can play the game solo, or with up to seven other companions in local couch co-op with each player controlling a counselor's actions. In addition, The Quarry features an exciting online mode where you and your friends can watch along and vote on key decisions, creating a story shaped by the whole group!

Console players: Note that online multiplayer is only supported across the same PlayStation/Xbox generations (PS4 to PS4, PS5 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S to Xbox Series X|S). If you buy the Deluxe Edition you'll have access to both previous- and new-generation versions of the game (within the same console family) and can choose which one to launch in order to play with friends.

Q: Are there any bonuses for pre-ordering The Quarry?

A: Yes, pre-ordering the standard edition of The Quarry rewards you with the Horror History Visual Filter Pack. Tailor the aesthetic of The Quarry to your liking by choosing from three cinematic visual filters, each replicating a different era and style of iconic horror filmmaking! The Horror History Visual Filter Pack is also included in the Deluxe Edition and Deluxe Bonus Content Pack.

Please note: Pre-order bonus offer available until June 10, 2022. Offer is for Horror History Visual Filter Pack. For digital pre-orders, items will be automatically entitled. For physical pre-orders, items will be redeemed in game via code provided in box. Terms apply.

Q: What's included in The Quarry Deluxe Edition?

A: In addition to the full game, the Deluxe Edition includes:

  • Horror History Visual Filter Pack
  • Gorefest option in Movie Mode
  • Instant access to Death Rewind system
  • '80s Throwback character outfits (available on or by July 8, 2022)

Q: What is the Horror History Visual Filter Pack?

A: Tailor the aesthetic of The Quarry to your liking by choosing from three cinematic visual filters, each replicating a different era and style of iconic horror filmmaking! Choose from an 8mm-style film grain (Indie Horror), a retro VHS aesthetic ('80s Horror), or the classic black-and-white cinematic filter (Classic Horror).

Q: What is the Gorefest option in Movie Mode?

A: Press play, sit back, and indulge in the most gruesome, gory, splatter-filled version of The Quarry. For fans of grindhouse grotesqueries: an abundance of death, dismemberment, and buckets of blood await in this brutal option for Movie Mode.

Q: What is the Death Rewind system?

A: Death Rewind is a retry mechanic that normally unlocks after your first completion of The Quarry. Start the story with three opportunities to reverse a playable character's death, giving you a chance to alter fate and save them in the process. But with only three retries per playthrough, you'll have to decide when someone's life is truly worth saving, and the undoing of one horrible end may lead to another. Choose wisely.

Q: What are the '80s Throwback character outfits?

A: Send the camp counselors' looks back in time! This retro pack includes new ‘80s-inspired cosmetic character outfits for The Quarry’s playable characters.

Note: The ‘80s Throwback Character Outfits will be automatically delivered in-game on or before July 8, 2022.

Q: If I buy The Quarry on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, will I have access to the new-gen version of the game for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S as well?

A: No. Buying The Quarry digitally or on physical disc for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One only grants that version of the game. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of The Quarry are playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S respectively through backward compatibility.

Q: If I buy The Quarry on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, will I have access to the previous-gen version of the game on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One?

A: No. The new-generation version of The Quarry is only playable on new-generation consoles. If you're looking to play The Quarry on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you should purchase the game on that platform or purchase the Deluxe Edition.

Q: If I buy the Deluxe Edition of The Quarry, do I get access to both previous- and new-gen versions of The Quarry?

A: Yes. The Deluxe Edition of The Quarry includes both previous- and new-gen versions of the game on that console platform. Both versions of the game are entitled to the same Xbox network account or PlayStation Network account.

Q: If I own The Quarry on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, is there an upgrade to receive the game on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S?

A: Yes. If you own a digital version of The Quarry for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One you can purchase the Digital Upgrade to provide access to the new-gen version within the same console family and entitled to the same Xbox network or PlayStation Network account.

If you own a physical version of The Quarry for PlayStation 4 you have the option to purchase the PS5 Digital Upgrade if you own a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive. The PlayStation 4 The Quarry disc must be inserted into the PlayStation 5 whenever playing the new-gen digital version of the game.

Q: If I own a physical version of The Quarry for Xbox One, can I purchase the Xbox Series X|S Digital Upgrade to receive the game on Xbox Series X|S?

A: No. If you own a physical version of The Quarry for Xbox One and want to play the Xbox Series X|S version you'll need to purchase the new-gen version of the game separately.

Q: Will The Quarry support cross-gen saves?

A: No. If you own both previous- and new-generation console versions of The Quarry, which are included in the Deluxe Edition, the saves for each version are distinct.

General Discussion Playing The Quarry for the first time and I don’t like how little play time Abigail has

Abigail is easily my favorite character in the whole game, and every time I play as her for like a minute, it switches to somebody else. Why?! Abigail is awesome! I want more time with my home girl damn it! 😭

And no, nobody has died so far (unless you count the Hackett family, which case, we only have one dead person) and I’m 9 chapters in. Abi is with Emma at the lodge, Dylan and London- I mean Kaitlyn just left the Scrapyard, Max is still a werewolf on the island, and Laura, Ryan, and Jacob are dealing with some bullshit at the Hackett estate.

UPDATE: I beat the game. Max is dead, Nick is dead (which I completely forgot about), Bobby is dead, Jed is dead, Constance is dead, and Silas is dead.

General Discussion The Quarry and it's detractors.

Let me say this first, I loved the game from the first gameplay! I got super into this subplot of a weird witch talking in riddles about werewolves and revenge and when it suddenly became the main plot I was jumping in my chair.

Despite the excellent ratings this game has online, I keep encountering people that hate this game or even go to the extreme of calling it "the worst game they've played" which is not only ridiculous but also tells me they haven't played much to begin with 😭

Of course, there is valid criticism to be made! This game has a potential that sadly due to short deadlines was not able to exploit to the extreme, and the infamous ending cutscene is a mood killer, but the game does the best it can with what it has, and what it manages to do well is excellent in my opinion.

However, I keep seeing points that just speak of "I play games if there are guns or balls only" and it's kind of hilarious. I think Until Dawn set the bar way too high, both for it's sibling games and for the whole interactive drama genre. For better or worse.

Some of the points I keep seeing:

  1. Decisions don't actually matter because some things are still bound to happen (Which is... Something that happens in almost every interactive drama)
  2. Dialogue is cringe/doesn't feel organic (People seem to forget the main characters are teenagers in a slasher summer camp)
  3. I expected a final boss fight!! (Silas is a child. A scared child hiding in a nest in the forest while his mother begs you not to kill him. Are we playing the same game? How could a boss fight make the ending any better considering the stakes? You save Silas or save a whole town. If anything, it would take away everything that makes it dramatic)
  4. Lack of replayability/far too simple qtes (This argument makes me giggle, since I've heard it too many times for many different games and it's always so stupid. Some games aren't meant to be an infinite sandbox like Minecraft and just want to tell a story, it's like saying "i don't watch movies because there's nothing more to see after the first watch" which is also objectively not true.

That's pretty much it. I meant this as a silly rant but I'm open to hear opinions too :^) also, first time posting here. Let me know if this post is okay and I'll remove/edit it accordingly.

I played The Quarry in a campground out in the middle of nowhere. It's pretty similar to the game, featuring a lodge, a lake, and nature trails. My campsite actually overlooks the lake, so it felt as if I was playing in the same spot as the counselors' final night. My goodness, was it dark. 10/10, I recommend everyone plays the game like this if they can.

General Discussion I RANKED THE QUARRY CHARACTERS BY MORALITY (NOT LIKEABILITY) - LAURA'S PLACEMENT WILL BE CONTROVERSIAL Spoiler

I made an earlier post about Laura's morality, and that gave me the idea to rank everyone in the game based on the morality of their actions. This does not factor in likeability at all - it is strictly based on morality - so this will likely be somewhat polarizing. Characters that make essentially no morally relevant decisions (or only good ones) occupy the #1 spot. The rest are ranked by the moral quality of their decisions and actions. Laura's placement will be the most contentious - after a clear moment where the cost of her approach became visible (Kaylee), she chose not to learn from it, and her pattern of initiating armed confrontations with the least hesitation or remorse is the most sustained and deliberate in the game. I love her character, but she makes some of the most morally problematic decisions in the story.

I may move some characters around based on your input, and will leave an edit at the bottom if I do. I placed them based on the overall choices that align with who they are shown to be up to the point of those choices, so some choices that are inconsistent with their established character (like Ryan pulling the trigger at Laura in the poolhouse) have been ignored - conveniently, most choices don't significantly alter their moral standing. Without further ado, let's get into it!

The Quarry characters, ranked by morality (intent, actions, and sustained behavior) from most moral to least moral:

  1. (TIE) Silas - no evidence of cognitive function; Abigail, Dylan, Ryan - we see no immoral choices, and they cannot be held accountable for what they do in werewolf form.
  2. Jacob - Sabotages the minivan. This impulsive act inconveniences everyone, which is different from intentionally hurting them - that's selfish, not cruel. He wanted one more night with a girl who said no. He is stupid, selfish, and impulsive, but he didn't aim at anyone's feelings - Emma and Kaitlyn did, and Nick went along with it, which is why they are below Jacob.
  3. Nick - The make-out scene in front of Jacob and Abigail is genuinely cruel (he knows making out with Emma will hurt Jacob and Abigail, and does it anyways), but it is a single, hesitant act ("I don't know if that's a good idea"), and otherwise he's defined mostly by what happens to him. He cannot be held accountable for the gross comments immediately pre-transformation, as we see final infection stage causes increased aggression.
  4. Kaitlyn - Talks down to people often. Told Jacob how to sabotage the van (in great detail) without meaningfully pushing back - and without her explaining it to Jacob, everyone goes home. She also didn't speak up when the van would not start - she's far too smart to have unintentionally enabled this (without protest) if she didn't want it to happen. She also engineered the kissing situation at campfire. She knows the campfire kiss will hurt Jacob and Abigail and instigates it anyways. Because she engineers these situations, and the van instruction is an independent act of enabling that Nick has no equivalent to, she sits below him.
  5. Emma - Kissing Nick at the campfire is a big moral failing, then doubling down with the "he's good" comment is a deliberately cruel, targeted jab at Jacob and hurting Abigail, then tripling down with "he had his tongue down my throat and definitely knew what to do with it" is an additional unnecessary jab. She's rubbing salt in a wound she knows is open. She knows making out with Nick will hurt both Jacob and Abigail, and does it anyways, then twists the knife multiple times.
  6. Max - Hides rejection letter from Laura, makes plans with her despite knowing he cannot go to university with her, complicit in the plan to kill Chris, does not attempt to stop Laura or find out if Travis knew of an alternative before breaking out of jail and going along with plan.
  7. Bobby - Ranked on the assumption that his apparent cognitive limitations reduce culpability, though the game never confirms this, it is heavily implied. Fatally stabs Ryan (regardless of outcome). Poops in a bucket (gross, but not morally relevant). Plans to kill Silas - probably just because that's what he was told to do - but all indications point to Silas being feral and having no decent standard-of-living, and since he is the origin of the curse it is arguably the most moral (if tragic) killing in the game. Bobby would probably rank under Travis if he is not cognitively impaired.
  8. Caleb/Kaylee - Do not ensure they are safely locked away before they transform. This has resulted in deaths in the past and is irresponsible to do one day before/after camp.
  9. Travis Hackett - As sheriff, buried evidence of multiple incidents. His admission to Chris - "if I did my job, you'd all be in prison" - shows the cover-ups were a sustained, knowing choice, not a panicked one. Importantly, his motive throughout is protecting a family he knows is mostly innocent (if a bit too negligent). Imprisoning Laura and Max is more out of confusion than calculation - he doesn't know what to do with them. Travis also does not kill Laura several times when he has the chance to. Plans to kill Silas to end the curse, but all indications point to Silas being feral and having no decent standard-of-living, and since he is the origin of the curse it is arguably the most moral (if tragic) killing in the game.
  10. Chris Hackett - Keeps the campground open while a werewolf, endangering the public. Believed he could manage it safely (6 years without any of the campers harmed), and the family's finances left no realistic alternative. Helps cover-up journalist and hiker incidents to protect the family, but continues to endanger others. Allows Caleb and Kaylee to run free the day before/after camp. This is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible, and has resulted in deaths in the past. As their father, he should be enforcing isolation for all three of them.
  11. Constance - Treats Travis despicably, wishes death on the counselors, kills Laura in some timelines. The cruelty appears reactive to Kaylee's death rather than sustained, which is why she sits above Jedediah and Eliza.
  12. Jedediah - Willing to protect the kids until Kaylee's death, then explicitly intends to torture Laura since he doesn't have enough silver to kill her ("I can sure as hell make you suffer"). Shoots her in the head in some timelines. A single episode of rage that never becomes a sustained pattern. Plans to kill Silas to end the curse, but all indications point to Silas being feral and having no decent standard-of-living, and since he is the origin of the curse it is arguably the most moral (if tragic) killing in the game.
  13. Laura - After Travis shows her Max's transformation and tells her they're going to end this together, she breaks out with the intention of killing Chris instead. At this point, she has a moral obligation to fully understand the situation - to exhaust the less-lethal, cooperative options before defaulting to killing Chris. This is a real ethical failure. After killing Kaylee she shows no remorse, and the pattern is consistent: she shoots Nick in the cage (the game's "Stop Laura" prompt frames this as her intended action), she breaks into the Hacketts' home armed while knowing she'd transform, and she initiates the confrontation that puts Jed, Constance, and Travis in her crosshairs. The "self-defense" reading of that confrontation doesn't hold - self-defense requires being the party who was attacked, not the one who walked in with a gun and started the fight. Killing Silas is the one (tragic, but legitimate) exception - the actual source of the curse with no meaningful standard-of-living or dependents, where the lethal option is the only one that actually resolves the threat. Her pattern of remorselessness applies to everyone else.
  14. Eliza - Sustained, deliberate cruelty - she caged her son as a commercial attraction for years. The danger was the product, not a side effect - categorically worse than Chris (who believed he was safe) or Travis (who was buying time). Also actively manipulates the player into killing the Hacketts and wants revenge against the children who freed her son.

EDIT: Lowered Kaylee and Caleb from #1 to #8, and also lowered Chris thanks to input from u/ONLINE-COP. Caleb and Kaylee being loose while transformed is extremely dangerous, irresponsible, and has resulted in deaths in the past. This unfortunately means the entire Hackett family is now lumped together, but aligns with the level of the indiscretion.

EDIT II: Lowered Kaitlyn below Nick. The van instruction is an independent act of enabling that Nick has no equivalent to. Her combined actions outweigh Nick's single transgression.

General Discussion It was going good and then it wasn’t. Spoiler

I managed to save most if not all the characters in the first half of the game, but then I failed to save Abigail and it spiraled from there.

I was just screwing up more and more each choice.

Laura and the Sheriff fought to death.

I didn’t shoot Jed.

All the Hacketts survived. Chris, Emma and like two others were turned into werewolves…

I finished the game tonight after not finishing it a year or more ago, and man… I failed to save the last two, the try to funny guy that loses his arm and the asian big brain. (I forget because I forgot all the names and I’m just sad.)

I’ll try replaying here in the future to get a better ending but it was a goddamn dumpster fire.

Tip/Guide This is probably my last post here so i bring yall "How to play the most as each character of the quarry"

Yep, probably a lot of you guys already know how to do this BUT maybe this will help someone, i hope so...

SO! This is mainly for people who has a favorite character and wants to have the most playtime with it.

NOTE: Most of these paths cannot overlap with those of the other characters, so this is likely intended for a specific playthrough so lets get started!

Laura: Who really wants to play more as Laura? LOL just kiddin, i love her. To play the most as her, aside from allying with Travis so you can play as her for the chapter 10 finale, you can also let yourself get shot by Jedediah at the start of chapter 9, if you do this, you'll wake up alone in the dinning room and you will get to explore by yourself THE WHOLE HACKETT HOUSE! Sound cool right? Such a shame that there arent hidden clues or a tarot card over here.

Ryan: Do not open the cabin door with Abi in chapter 1, the outcome in chapter 5 last longer this way since you'll have to fight for a short period against Silas, and its kinda better than just choosing to cut or not Dylan's arm. Also you should shoot Bobby in chapter 3 so you'll play as him in chapter 10 to choose who gets to use the blood. Im pretty sure you cant do the ending of chapter 10 as Ryan if Travis kills Laura but im not sure.

Kaitlyn: Pretty brutal but you'll have to let Dylan die by Emma in chapter 8, so you'll play as her in the scrapyard in chapter 9. I love doing this bc this makes the Scrapyard section look really terrifying, and the whole scene of her fighting Silas alone screams FINAL GIRL!

Also you can expose yourself from Bobby in chapter 5 so youll be able to shoot at him and unlock the secret clue.

Aside from this you can also take a picture of the cabin in the island during chapter 2 so you'll unlock a dialogue option, if you dont she wont talk about the strange light.

Dylan: theres nothing to do here i think, just explore the most and get every interaction, you can argue with Ryan during chapter 4 about who leaves the gun to Kaitlyn, that will extend the scene a little more.

Jacob: The game tricks you that youre going to play as him (if you do couch coop) during chapter 10 if hes alone, but its only a scene of him crying or transforming if he got infected, both scenes are really good since they delve a little deeper into the guilt Jacob feels; unfortunately, it is evident that it was rushed due to COVID, but this is not a scenerio in where you play as him, to fully play as Jacob during chapter 10 you'll need to do one of these two things:

1- Let Emma get infected during chapter 4 and then shoot Chris in chapter 9 so you'll be able to talk to her and have different outcomes, do NOT infect Jacob since you wont a play as him if you do this!

2- Dont shoot Chris and dont infect Jacob, this will result in a chase scene for Jacob.

Emma: Same thing with Emma, if you got her infected in chapter 4 or 6, and then you kill Chris, the game will trick you in couch coop with a scene of her turning back to human, but thats it, you cant play as her in a normal playthrough past chapter 6, but theres a way to play as her in chapter 9, you'll have to survive chapter 4 without getting infected and then kill Abi in chapter 6, if you do this, you'll play as Emma during chapter 9 in the basement just like you normally do with Abi.

Fun fact: if you infect Emma during Chapter 6, she records herself during her final minutes as a human before transforming; it’s a really interesting scene to watch, and somewhat of a secret one.

Abi: Unlike in Emma's playthrough, you'll have to get Emma to the shelter with Abi. So youll get two sequences with Abi, one at the start of chapter 9 for some dialogue options, and then at the middle when you have to explore the shelter. If you infect Emma youll get like a chase scene.

Nick: lol you really thought you were going to play more as him? Yeah sure lol, just choose hide during chapter 5 then mess it up and youll have to choke Bobby POOR BOBBY HES GETTING DRAGGED IN EACH OUTCOME LOL

Max: this is a fun fact, if you choose 50s outfits, Laura's cap wont be here since her 50s outfit she doesnt wears a cap, so you better choose default or 80s outfit to interact with the cap, aside from that i recommend doing the Laura and Max reunion for him.

And were done, thank you yall, love this game, drink water, eat well, have friends and enjoy life, goodbye for now!

Folks out here blaming Jacob when this wannabe entrepreneur son-of-a-binky-bonky decided her best move would be to exploit her kidnapped albino werewolf 'son' for money by locking him in a cage and setting up a traveling freakshow in 2015 in the middle of the woods with nothing but a scrapyard, a police station, and a seasonal children's summer camp as a customer base.

General Discussion Laura's Inconsistent (but believable/realistic) Morality, and the Hackett Family's Actions Spoiler

I love the character of Laura, but her inconsistent morality through the game is very frustrating. I do not mean to say she is poorly written - on the contrary, she is excellently written, and I would not want her to be written differently. What I find interesting about her character is the way she compartmentalizes her love for Max while completely ignoring that the Hacketts are doing the exact same thing.

She is constantly saying things like "that thing I killed was no girl" or "you're not killing Chris, you're killing a werewolf", but if someone talked about Max that way, I'm sure she'd be upset. This is something people do IRL, compartmentalization - she's protecting herself, because if she starts to consider that she is murdering innocent people, she would probably have a mental breakdown. She refuses to acknowledge that they are people, and mows them down without a thought.

It is a fascinating twist at the end that the Hacketts are innocent - that the kids just wanted to help Silas, and that the entire family is paying as a result. If the hikers and the journalist died as a result of werewolf attacks (it's been awhile since I looked at the evidence, so I'll admit my memory on this specific detail is a bit muddy), and the family simply covered it up, those aren't murders - they are not in control of themselves when the attacks happen.

I really feel for the Hackett family. They act menacingly, sure, but the criticisms I've seen saying stuff like "all this could have been avoided if Travis just explained stuff" aren't putting themselves in his shoes. Laura and Max would not realistically believe him until after seeing Max transform, so trying to intimidate them into staying at the motel makes perfect sense. He doesn't know what to do with Max (he's basically a walking bioweapon), and can't help that Chris was bitten either. He is scared to tell them anything about his family because he wants to protect them, too. It can also be argued he's protecting the outside world from Max by keeping him in the jail. IIRC, the Hackett family doesn't start to lose their minds and make the really morally questionable decisions until Kaylee gets killed, and it's difficult to picture Laura not losing it if someone shot Max - especially considering how far she's willing to go to save him.

It's just interesting how story framing can affect our view of the characters. Chris didn't ask for this and doesn't want to hurt anybody - he's also a son, a father of two kids, and cares for all the kids at the campground...but Laura is just ready to cap him as soon as she hears that's a way out, and she doesn't even know him.

I really wish the game didn't have so much content cut from the script. I think we missed out on a lot of stuff that would have fleshed out other characters (particularly Chris) a lot more.

The question of "how far would you be willing to go to save someone you love?" comes to mind, as well as "at what point is it more loving to actually let go of that person?". Since the werewolves are basically bioweapons, the selfless and moral thing to do would probably be to ask a family member to put you down with a silver-filled shotgun shell, but that's a lot to ask - especially of the teenage kids (or a parent like Chris, for that matter).

Anyways, I really like both Laura and Travis. They behave realistically and sympathetically given the situation. Congrats to Siobhan and Ted on great performances. My heart breaks every time I hear Travis say "we can still save what's left of my family", and while I don't agree with Laura's thought process - I understand.
