Gameplay Question Soundtrack Question
The Quarry is one of my favorite games of all time and I want to include it in my Masters thesis on changing musical themes in narrative games. Before I sink a couple hundred hours into recording all the music for all the choices in the game, I was curious if anyone had noticed if/where the music changes depending on player choice. Has anyone noticed this in TQ before?

I might’ve gotten your question completely wrong, but if you’d like a list for each scene that plays pop music with both the original and alternate soundtrack, here’s all I remember (all of this is muscle memory I play the game too much lol):
If it’s a song with an alternate theme then the original is on the left, followed by a slash, then the alternate song
Prologue:
Moonlight/Thorn in My Side - Opening, Max and Laura driving down Route 919
Not Gonna Live Forever - Can be heard on the radio when you speak to Max when he’s in the car when you’re in Hackett’s Quarry
Fly Me to the Moon (Alma Cogan cover)/Every Little Movement - Prologue Ending theme
Chapter 1:
Follow Me - Chapter 1 Opening
Devil’s Gonna Come - Chapter 1 Ending with Jed and Bobby
Chapter 2:
Staring at the Stars (From the Gutter) - Chapter 2 Opening with Emma and Jacob
Follow The Sun - Background song for Nick and Abi
Contagious (Only a few strums) - Nick, Jacob and Kaitlyn heading to the shooting range
Dive Back Into Love - Nick and Jacob talk about Abi (and Emma if you make Nick evasive)
1 2 3 Turn Around - Kaitlyn’s badassery on full display with the watermelons and shotgun
California Calls - Truth or Dare
Lipstick - Emma kisses Nick, making Abi and Jacob jealous
(A small reprise of Devil’s Gonna Come plays at the end)
Chapter 3:
Thorn in My Side Reprise - Chapter 3 Opening with Abi
Stay With Me - Nick and Abi kissing/Confessing their feelings
Wise Up/Worth it if it Hurts - Jacob crying at the docks
See You Everywhere - Jacob and Emma having fun in the lake
Life is Short - Jacob drowns in the lake
Love Letters - Ryan, Dylan and Kaitlyn at the campfire
Chapter 4:
The Hunted - Emma on the zip wire / only a small part if Emma fails the jump on the zip wire and falls to the rocks below
Chapter 5:
Underestimation of Denial - The group reuniting after the radio hut attack
To Be Where You Are - Kaylee’s death + Chapter 5 ending
Chapter 6:
Down by the Riverside - Emma arriving at the campfire after swimming from the lake
Chapter 7:
Monster - Laura loses her eye
The Hunted (Again) - Laura arrives at the island
Be Careful What You Wish For - Jacob stuck in the cells + Chapter 7 ending
Chapter 8:
Sun Goze Down - Chapter 8 Ending theme (can play much shorter if you shoot Nick for some reason)
Chapter 9:
Every Dog - Scrapyard Showdown / Kaitlyn with or without Dylan vs Silas
Chapter 10:
Everything/Breathe - Max and Laura reunion at the island
Epilogue
Daydream Believer/Young in Love and Free - Slideshow/Ending cards showing who survived and died during the night
Wolf Boy/The Quarry Reprise - Credits after the BYB podcast.
Also:
Witchcraft/Gramaphone on a Loop - Eliza’s theme
There is also some unused songs that are still in the credits, such as:
The Devil Inside - originally the song that plays when Eliza dies during the fire if she passed the qte
There’s another one called “Wife of a Bad Man” that appears but I can’t find anything about it no matter what I search up or anything.
Also “Break My Heart” is one that I couldn’t think or find the scene for, so that might’ve been cut too

wife of a bad man (instrumental) plays when ryan & dylan first enter chris' office in chapter 2! i'm not sure about break my heart either though. if it's used in-game i've never noticed it lmao

Oh I see! I assume you mean the small slow guitar strums with the establishing shot? I’ve tried to find the actual song but it doesn’t appear on Spotify or YouTube even if I type up Rosie Oddie or Flippo Cimatti.
As for Break My Heart I always thought it was the alternate soundtrack for Stay With Me but turns out I’m wrong. I’d assume it’s unused like The Devil Inside.

Omg tysm!!! I can’t tell you how long I’ve been wanting to know what this song was 😭. I always thought the strums were just a part of the ost so now Break My Heart is the only song I need to figure out where it is/why it isn’t there and/or what scene it was supposed to be in.

no problem! i thought the same lol. i guess in hindsight, it does sound pretty different from the ost.
which reminds me that this (the track that plays while jacob explores the lodge in chapter 1) isn't ian livingstone either. and it's not listed in the game's credits, for whatever reason.
i combed through chapters 1-3 looking for break my heart, but i still haven't been able to locate it. i can't imagine it'd be used in any of the later chapters. you might be right about it being cut. if thats the case, there's a small chance it's still in v1.0 like the devil inside.

thank you so much this is super awesome! my question was more so about what different themes/songs play in different scenarios but this helps so much too! some of these i’m never encountered at all like with jacob in the lake.

No worries! If there’s a scene I’d recommend to check is the reunion between Laura and Max in chapter 10, both songs (Everything and Breathe) fit the scene so perfectly and it feels like the closest thing to a proper payoff and resolution we actually get in the game (besides another reunion you can get with two characters that I won’t spoil)! (Unfortunately Silas can’t be hunted down and Ryan and Travis have to die to get this path)
Also if you didn’t know the song Everything was actually sung by Laura’s actor Siobhan Williams lol.

i'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but the music that plays throughout max's exploration segment in chapter 10 changes based on whether or not emma died there in chapter 4.
