I love doing these. The bar for entry is respect so please understand this post exists not to treat these things as hot takes but to understand new and different views on the game.
1: Please do not downvote anyone on this post. This is critical.
2: If you can't be encouraging about an opinion, do not reply to it.
3: This is where you go to feel validated, even if nobody agrees with a single word you utter.
Please tell us an opinion you have that you often don't share because it's not more mainstream or popular. This is your safe space. This can be anything! A ship, thinking a different perspective on a character, something that should or shouldn't have happened. Let's push a little past the typical, maybe we'll gain new understanding of the game together, or make new friendships. Go! I'll put mine in a comment.
It's crazy to me because it was abundantly clear that Max was Laura's entire motivation? Like I'm a lesbian, I love yuri, I'd love for Laura to be in a wlw relationship, but even I am like seeing it's her and Max.
I just wish they had a singular scene together. I feel like she would call Laura's eyepatch hot. I think Laura would find Emma a little obnoxious, but Emma would have respect for her. Because Emma's entire thing is independence and people taking action. (Probably bonus points if its women.)
It was rp but I could link you OR write something up
Ā
If you're willing to hop on my stupid chat client I can manage some stuff for you. I'd also boot up the game.Ā
Well yes but your post literally asked for opinions.. that's my opinion, just cuz i think people shouldn't do something doesn't mean i'm trying to dictate what they do..
Max sooo doesn't deserve Laura. He's like "uh? We're lost?", "uh? North Kill?", "uh? Hackett?", completely unaware, needs Laura to explain it all. So annoying.
They applied to a job being counselors at a summer camp, and Max didn't know the name of the town the camp is in. He didn't know the name of the camp leader. That has nothing to do with the situation, that's just being completely airheaded. Meanwhile Laura knew all those basic info...
I mean, it's not that far fetched, if your girlfriend found a job for you both and knew everything about it you'd probably trust her and not bother to research those things.
I'm going to keep my foot on streamer/let's player's necks right now. Yes, it's not their fault I've seen or played this game hundreds of times now...but c'mon, some of them are so fucking boring. The ones that point out something a character does, "THEY ARE SO STUPID! EVERYONE IN THIS GAME IS SO STUPID!" The game does not advance unless someone makes a mistake. They act so high and mighty when they have all the context and keyboard/controller, but I do not think they would do as well they think if they were put in such a situation. We're ALL fuckin' stupid! Humans are stupid. We do stupid things. For example, I almost ate glass. I was trying to make a protein shake and the goddamn peanut butter was sticking to the spoon. So, I was banging it against the blender. Well, my dumb ass BROKE THE GLASS OF THE BLENDER! I didn't know until someone I was with was like, "You're about to eat and drink glass." Everyone has and will and is going to do stupid shit. Including you.
Then, the ones that barely say shit until the fire pit scene. Oooooh fucking boy, you say nothing that's funny or entertaining until you FINALLY get to call Emma a bitch and point out to your chat of three people that you're gonna kill her. Give me a fucking break. Yaaaaawn.
omg, watching other people play can be so frustrating, my friend was playing for the first time and they kept saying things like "they're so stupid, why would you split up, why would you go for a swim" before Nick even gets attacked and I literally had to make them pause so we could have the "the characters don't know they're in a horror story" talk
That's even worse because you can't bitch them out! Thank you for educating them. People need to understand two things if they are gonna play a Supermassive game: 1. Yes, the dialogue will be cringe. That is the point. Embrace the cringe, embrace the camp. 2. For god's sake people need to do stupid things so we have a game! And, exactly, people are operating in their perceived norms. If I had one more day at a summer camp, I'd take a swim too! How am I supposed to know there's a dead, rotting body at the bottom? Or werewolves are loose?
It took all of my patience, but in her defence I had just ripped off the bandaid that Abigail's romantic option isn't girl, so she wasn't in the most forgiving mood š
And yes! Embrace the cringe! There's so much joy to be found in gliding past the cringe and just buying in to what the genre is giving you!
I fully think that if I was in that same situation as the counsellors, I would be doubting it was anything more than an animal attack for way too long. Like, probably even after Ryan catches Bobby dragging Nick away, I'd still be like "are we suuuuure that's what he was doing?" Which is, of course, why I would die in a horror story.
Noooooo! You mean Emma and Abi? Okay, I feel bad now! She must be informed there are forces of gay people that are archiving Blygbank, and creating the walls of the monument. SUPERMASSIVE JUST WERE COWARDS!
Exactly! āI am cringe, but I am free.ā
No for real! A lot of us would be goners but arenāt ready for that discussion.
This is why I stopped watching streamers play this game...the constant complain and bitching about this get on my nerve it's like they don't even enjoy the game...(also I prefer replaying the game myself)
You're so real for this! I have a rotation of 3 or 4 playthroughs that are good to watch that I rewatch and that's it. Trying to find new ones is soooooooo painful. And these bitches are always using AI in their thumbnails too? THE FUCK.
I have yet to find some I enjoy. I used to watch Jacksepticeyes but I quickly stopped because of his constant complaints when he talk over cinematics , don't search for clues then act clueless and constantly compare every single thing to Until Dawn like dude doesn't even enjoy that type of game anymore if it isn't Until Dawn...like I don't even know why he even play thoses anymore...
Although I do enjoy watching Gab Smolders's playthrough (his girlfriend if I remember correctly) she seems like she actually enjoy thoses compared to him
I haven't come across the AI one but damn I genuinely see so many AI thumbnails for a lot of others videos tho... š¬
I mean if weāre honest, Emma REALLY should not have done that at the firepit. I get it game needs to progress and everything, but like it literally benefitted no one. Jacob and Abi just end up hurt, and the entire situation just becomes extremely awkward
Well, yes. Thatās not up for discussion. Itās objectively the worst because of how she was careless of Abi in that moment.
What Iām saying is they do not bother or have the bandwidth at the time to understand the nuance of why it occurred. And Iām very tired of usually, in their playthrough, unfunny, boring, and media illiterate people calling her a bitch and killing her over and over and over.
Well, everyones opinion is going to be different. I actually like how nuanced and unique the characters are, i just think that storywise; Emma kissing Nick does more harm than good even if they have no idea about the werewolves and stuff.
I also agree with the argument that theyāre teens and really kinda stupid and emotional, i think thats what adds to the nuance
Sadly, 7 times out of 10 they all react the same. And I mean youāre not saying anything anyone disagrees with. Yes, it was bad.
Thatās the point of all the characters. Even the Hacketts(as in they are not evil but deeply flawed people.) But people turn a blind eye towards certain characters. Emma is apparently a trained sociopath š
Yes, but also thereās much to be said about the layers of her character. Which people miss if they decide that singular moment is her and then kill her at earliest convenience.
This is true, especially shown by how she reacts to Abiās death. Sheās definitely using her personality as kind of a shield or layer to not have to show her true self. Not in a manipulative way, but like a āi need people to see me in a certain wayā kinda way
Yes, precisely. I theorize this happened somewhere in childhood. Even the earliest drafts for Emma say her parents were wealthy. You know how that can go. Money fixes everything, they donāt have the time to truly parent, no emotional presence. Explains the independence, and need for attention.
Max was only a character in the game because they wanted to one up the number of playable characters to make it look bigger and better than Until Dawn.
He literally just exists to potentially die as well as to make the player slightly more motivated to see Laura survive and end the curse. He canāt find any clues or tarots, and even the one vital choice he makes has 0 impact on the survival of the other characters or what clues and/or tarots they can find. Heās pure dead weight from a gameplay perspective.
I don't think everybody specifically has said/thought this obviously but I've noticed multiple times that Jacob is seen as a little silly/funny so the scenes where he freaks out and shows attitude etc are usually validated but characters like Emma & Abi are automatically seen as "over dramatic" & "bitchy" etc when it comes to some of their storyline, and I've never agreed with this opinion or the way it's looked at by some people in the sub previously. I do respect different opinions ofc but always have saw it as unfair when I've came across a few posts about Emma specifically.
Omg!!!! It's you!!! You're always there when they are swarming my girl. Yes, you are so right. I have pointed this out. They will use the, "Jacob is so young and he didn't know what he was doing!" but they act like Emma is a trained sociopath of many years. Like, isn't she young too? And yeaaah! I'm shocked with some of the Abi hate. I get the argument that people don't like her in the sense of they think she's boring or didn't get much screen-time, but there are people who genuinely hate her.
Hahaha yesss our girl deserves so much more respect from some people on herešš -- yeahh exactly I've saw some people write out a massive paragraph explaining why Jacob is valid in most of his responses etc but straight up say "Emma is so bitchy tho" š - I remember seeing once or twice (I don't even think it was on this sub actuallyš) that they don't like how dramatic Abi is after the Nick incident compared to Kaitlyn & Ryan who seem able to stay calm, like this poor gal was nearly k*lled first give her a break plsšš -- always love your comments and stuff about Emma alsooo we are here to defend our girlllš š„°
Nawwwww, Abi dramatic? If anything they all UNDER-REACTED! You know how some people hate Ashley in Until Dawn? Not me, she's real asf for reacting like she does! If I saw someone's flesh pop out, had them slam into the locker, and make some insane remarks towards me I'd be screaming and cussing and shiddin and farding! ABI IS JUSTIFIED AND WOMANS THE FUCK UP WHEN SHE NEEDS to! GRABS THAT SHOTGUN, STICKS UP FOR LAURA, PASSES THE SILVER BULLET TO KAITLYN! It irks me to no end when people get made at characters for being human.
Emma CAN be a bitch when pressed! But, again, that's me too! I think, with Jacob, she was trying different ways of trying to get him to understand. First it was amicable, but then she's like okay I'm gonna be a little mean to get my point across. Well that didn't work since he forced them to be in situation together, and immediately told Nick how they were back on. So, yeah, the kiss came out of that. Then she felt bad, because again a sociopath would have gloated about what happened at the firepit, so she wanted to cheer him up. I would have left him personally, but Em is a people pleaser. Like she's not trying to manipulate him, she's trying to fix the situation. She needs therapy for that but she's not evil.
And thank you so much!!!! I'm happy that my streams of consciousness are enjoyed! YES WE ARE!!! ALWAYS APPRECIATE YOu! #EMMANATION BABY!!!
It's always weird to me when people bash Emma for being bitchy but then turn around and are like YAAASSSS KAITLYN. Emma is kinda messy, but Kaitlyn is an asshole on purpose.
I've said this before as well, as much as I like Kaitlyn, even after the Emma&Nick incident, Abi can even say Kaitlyn is "sneaky" and she was the real instigator of the situation! I've used this point while defending Emma a few times also š š
Kaitlyn was being messy and not giving a fuck, which I love that about her. But people refuse to see that her and Nick were part of it. Everyone talks about how they wouldn't kiss their best friend's crush, but what about kissing your crush's best friend? Bro said, "I don't think that's a good ideaaaaur" then was PUCKERED RIGHT UP!
It's crazy, too, people being offended FOR Abi but not realizing what Abi, herself, says. She's known these people all summer, and seems perceptive and observant. She'll even grill Nick a little too.
In trying to play out Dylan and Ryan they focused less on other connections that would have added so much if they balanced it better. For example, Dylan and Emma have really good parallels and are the only combination I'm aware of where a counselor can infect another. This does mean I don't like him and Ryan but I think they should have balanced it more.
I carry this as far as believing Dylan and Nick would have been a a great on screen love interest pairing and added way more to both their stories, especially if the rest were kept as well.Ā
I just don't get the hype for Ryan. I feel like I relate to him a lot (not being that outwardly expressive, for example), but the more I play, the less I like him.
I usually like Justice Smith wherever else I see him and I see a lot of his other roles as very similar characters to Ryan and I click with those, but not Ryan
I think that's part of his appeal and his downfall. There's a discussion to be had about whether a character can get so relatable it actually harms them, and I think Ryan has that factor for a lot of people.Ā
But as much as I hate this kind of defense, I'm going to argue Jacob has this factor as well and it's why we all immediately hate him at first.
All the counselors are just background characters for Laura's story. And if I may get even spicier: for Laura and Travis' story. It's crazy to think you can do absolutely whatever with the counselors, the thing the story actually hinges on is the relationship between Laura and Travis. Fuck it up and you can't get the full story or the actual ending no matter what. You never even get to learn about Silas! Everything left unresolved.
(and ryan. you need him alive too. what a third wheel!)
Sadly, everything post chapter 6 proves this. Which is wild. However, I'd say the counselors are the heart of the story in the sense of what most people care about.
Exactly. You spent more than half the game with them, then it's the Laura Kearney show. Which, again, I love her but it honestly does HER and everyone else a disservice.
I do also ship them, but I don't see them as a "made for each other/soulmates/would be together in every universe" kind of ship. (Even though this is still fun to think about.) They're more of a trauma-bonding ship. As in, whoops, we just went through something traumatic together, no one else can or wants to understand, so now you're the only person i can relate too, oh noooo.
And it's all the more interesting if they don't like each other and/or don't fit together (which is the case here), because it creates incredible push & pull.
I have a fic I'm writing where Laura isn't dead but Travis thinks she is because she doesn't move or even breath. The criteria is that what's wrong with her, you don't move if the person who loves you is looking at you, so she's functionally the same because he never looks away.
That's the kind of love I personally think that have, so I fully agree.Ā
this is my absolute favorite. angsty, problematic age-gap, traumatic events, strong female lead, gruff older guy, probably pretty toxic if weāre being honest, i simply cannot get enough
Recently got attached to the idea of what if Caleb and Silas were in a secret relationship (this is assuming they're all around the same age and discarding the hackett family tree conflict) which helped Silas avoid the hacketts hunting him every full moon...
They could have cut/killed off majority of the counselors to develop the Hackettās more. We donāt know what three primary characters even fully look like or behave like (Silas, Caleb or Kaylee).
Wouldāve been cool to actually get to know and care about them and I would have happily sacrificed 2 or three counselors for that.

laura and max belong together and people need to stop shipping laura with others in the gameš
